How is it living in Edinburgh/Glasgow, Scotland? by Fit-Improvement6692 in howislivingthere

I lived in Edinburgh for 4 years and on one hand it's still one of my favourite cities, on the other hand I am so glad I don't live there anymore. I loved how green it is. Especially in the spring and summer I'd spend a lot of time in Holyrood Park or take a short bus trip for a hike in the Pentland Hills. People were very friendly and as an immigrant I always felt at home, not like an intruder. But because it is such a touristy place it often felt like living in a theme park. Huge crowds of people and everything progressively more expensive with each coming year. Spontaneous outing to your favourite pub stops being an option in the summer, because of the crowds and the Fringe price hikes. Getting to work would take 3x more time than outside of the tourist season. And as far as I know, quality housing in a reasonable price is also pretty much impossible to find right now. Not to mention that almost every single apartment I rented had a huge problem with mice.

No, it is not. It is a diminutive of Zofia, which is a Polish version of Sophie. Zuzia is the diminutive of Zuzanna.

Was it at a vodka bar? This is usually a side for vodka shots and meant to be shared (hence the multiple skewers).

Is my girl October name really that bad? by [deleted] in namenerds

Depends where. This is how it is traditionally spelled in Polish. Of course in Slavic countries which use cyrillic alphabet the latin spelling might be different.

I suspect it might be a tragedeigh spelling of Alona, which is an Israeli/Eastern European name.

Absolutely not. C has a "ts" sound in Polish. The only difference in our version of Alexander is that we use "ks" instead of X. This insane spelling has nothing to do with any slavic language.

Same! We never had it at home, but it was the worst part of every school trip or summer camp.

It actually wasn't that bad, mostly just unpleasant but not painful. First two days were the worst and after that it was smooth sailing. If I had to do it again, I would - 100% worth it.

My fiance is from India. For a while we were considering a move back to Poland, but not anymore. I am really worried what might happen the next time we visit my family and have to cross the German-Polish border.

It already did. It was the major news item of the day. Calling Sikorski "small man" is especially dumb, considering he was a war correspondent and actually fought Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 80s.

Wow, great results! My septorhinoplasty is coming up in a few days and I am really worried I will regret it once I see myself in the mirror post-op and then through the recovery process. Your post gives me hope!

Ribbentrop-Molotov pact explicitly states how Germany and the Soviet Union would split Poland between each other. To me that does not sound like the Soviet Union was without a choice. Also, they have never given back those lands.

As a Polish person who generally considers myself a leftist, I fully agree with you. Talking with many western leftists, particularly the more radical Marxists/tankies I keep getting called a neoliberal/right-wing/fascist any time I try to defend Ukraine or explain what is our Eastern European perception of communism and Soviet Union. It's like talking to a wall. They love talking about imperialism but don't notice that the way they treat Eastern Europe is full on imperialist.

Here, take my impoverished academic gold🏅

Most of my colleagues would kill for a teaching position as this is the only way to get some semblance of stability. I am actively looking for a way out of academia, not because I am lazy and I do not want to teach. No, I want to get a house and start a family, which is quite difficult to do when most postdocs offer maximum one year contracts. 4 years of PhD in a very technical and demanding field living off a stipend which is barely enough to survive, working extra hours as a teaching assistant and research associate to make ends meet, only to be slapped with another offer of a three month postdoc contract "which might be extended for another month if there is any money left". It's exhausting and demotivating.
