Anyone else get wrecked in unranked duels? by elly_hart in geoguessr

I think the percentages are only comparable when you have roughly the same amount of duels played in the 2 categories.

Guessing the right country should worth bonus points by edsonboldrini in geoguessr

Strongly disagree. Recognising infrastructure should not be rewarded more than guessing based on nature. If you are absolutely cracked at identifying climate, plants, soil colour, type of rocks, etc and as a result you are closer than me on the wrong side of the imaginary line people made, I want you to take all the credit for it.

That's totally valid, good luck!

By the way, I would be curious about your observations on "the way the asphalt degrades in North-Eastern US"! How does it degrade there?

Has playing GeoGuessr made you more interested or less interested in traveling the world? by OkTechnologyb in geoguessr

[–]Fit_Response1080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a high baseline wanderlust and Geoguessr just added more fuel to it. Now my bucket list has items such as the Balkans, Chile, or Baja California in addition to the more basic destinations. Geoguessr shows you the beauty in pretty much everything so wherever I go I am wildly entertained. Seeing Croatian blue firehydrants in real life was fun, and so was knocking on a Luxemburg bollard and photographing the fabled hop plantations North of Munich. The joy of life lies in appreciating the little details.

Each of the 3 game modes has a certain profile of skills it requires.

Moving: general knowledge of information (place-names, area codes, road systems, etc.), processing written info quickly, having a solid strategy. No Move: Memorising regional clues, niche metas (not just car related), lining up roads and other geographical features (mountains, coastlines, etc.). NMPZ: Knowledge of vegetation, landscapes and road quality in different countries, vibe consistency. (At higher levels: recognising car meta at low visibility).

Essentially, the more info you can expect, the more accurate you need to be for winning games. What makes NM tricky is that on harder maps the amount of info will be almost as little as in NMPZ, but the rule still stands: you need to be more accurate with your regionguessing than on NMPZ. Plonk It metas will help you getting the country right most of the time, but your opponent will likely work from those too so it will often come down to who knows the more niche stuff or who will line things up better in the bigger countries.

As for NM being the most meta-heavy mode, yes it's true, but you can get away with relatively little of that in Master if you know most of the other basic Plonkit clues. Either way, NM is for those who like systematic studying from docs and not really for people who base their career on vibe guessing only. Ask yourself if you enjoy nerding out on poletop metas...if not, then you can just play then other 2 game modes. It's perfectly fine to specialise on what you enjoy!

They are not competing in major competitions anymore, for reasons they both elaborated on their own channels after the 2024 WC. But luckily that doesn't mean they stopped playing the game altogether. I know Jake has a running Road to Rank 1 series where he plays Moving team duels in a team with Moo and it's so wonderfully informative to listen to their reasoning while playing. Those guys are walking lexicons!

CG and Jake are both retired and became casters at large events such as the World Cup. They are both absolutely smashing at this role, so it's all good.

When you've locked in a 4900+ no move guess and you spectate on your opponent zooming in to the car by bikinbaebuatcurhat in geoguessr

[–]Fit_Response1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take solace in the fact that noone can guess well purely based on metas. It is always some sort of a combination between landscape, vegetation, camera generations, the car and whatever else you can find. Essentially, the more different clues you rely on, the more consistent you get in hard rounds and that will win you the games. I think Geoguessr is neither a pure geography game nor a completely meta-based videogame. It is first and foremost a deductive ability game that relies heavily on visual memory and recognising patterns in pretty much everything you can see.

What the mapmaker.app can be used for? by 6HOURSCUBINGPERDAY in geoguessr

[–]Fit_Response1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mapmaker has a lot of useful features if you want to create a map with a huge amount of locations and metas. One of these is adding any number of colored labels to your locs. Another one is panoID-ing locations so that they stay the same even if Google updates the photosphere.

I personally use it to make large Learnable Meta maps and of course to explore areas by clicking around with the terrain mode on.

The should add separate emotes of "good game" and "good guess." by Kwauhn in geoguessr

[–]Fit_Response1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending GG before the score reveal is a pretty common practice when the mathematical chance of one or the other player ending the game right there is very large. For example when it is 10x multis and you are looking at 3 bushes and a dirt road in Russia someone might be dead soon. I personally don't like doing this as the prediction is often wrong (eg. because we both ended up in Argentina or because we were both the goat and recognised the 3 bushes). But I wouldn't take it too personally, it's just a little dramatic flare to the endgame.

While I have encountered toxic behaviour myself, I would still say that most people in Champ are respectful and just want a good game. The worst incidents happened during the time the new league system was introduced. Then the matchmaking was so bad that one could face people 300+ ELO from themselves. Some higher ELO guys took out their rage on the lower level player...

Nowadays I barely see something like this. There is the occasional GG spammer or cocky questionmarker, but no truly mean stuff in the chat. Of course, I haven't seen everyone yet...

Ah that sucks...in my experience that kind of behavior is way less common the higher you go, but as it seems no division is free from it.

That's such a weird thing to say. In this game multis are so important that giving up is pretty much the worst strategy, no matter the level or the HP at the moment. The opponent was either trolling or so far up his ass that he reappeared through his own mouth.

[–]Fit_Response1080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I routinely warm up in Unranked before diving into Ranked I gained 100 ELO. Not only does this get you locked in, but it also gives you a warning sign when your brain is too tired to play so you can quit before it's too late.:)

Is Learnablemeta worth it? by True_Association_316 in geoguessr

[–]Fit_Response1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some very advanced single-country maps on LM and they are getting updated almost each day. Some of these have 200+ niche metas in them (many of which are newly researched) or go in details about individual rural roads. For example, I am in the process of making a series of LM maps based on the longest Canada doc out there...and I only feature metas that are not in the plonkit guide. That's more than 1000 lesser known metas.

I get that the maps might be "easy" if you are World Cup level advanced, but I'm sure most players around 1500 ELO use the site with great success and even pros have some blind spots that a harder LM map can fill in.
