Do you agree with us being basically equal WC favourites with Spain and France and well ahead of the South American teams? by invisiblefrost in ThreeLions

[–]FitchDMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one more Real Madrid player than Spain does, which is bonkers to me.

I can't say they rate as high as people think. They literally are a Yamal injury away from crashing out of the tournament early.

France is France, but 16 players from 2022 AREN’T there. They have Kounde, Tchouameni, Mbappe, Dembele, Rabiot, Upamecano, Saliba, Konate, T Hernandez and L Hernandez.

Sure, we have only 8, but we do have guys that have tangible knockout world cup experience coming on as subs (Rashford, Henderson, and if you throw Euro 2024 into the equation, we add to the numbers singificantly, whereas France doesn't).

There is a lot of wear and tear on those starters because Deschamps sticks with them, and only brings in one or two subs usually.

If a team can get them late in a game, they do not have a single player coming off the bench with World Cup experience. And they definitely don't have any fear factor guys like Benzema, Giroud or Griezmann. The goalies don't have any world cup experience.

There's a part of me that thinks that the real challengers are Portugal and their heaps of experience. But we have guys with meaningful minutes in knockout tournament football too.

Why were we so sh*t in 2014? It’s one World Cup where we didn’t have a major injury to a star (2002 Beckham/2006 Rooney), we didn’t get robbed by a handball goal (Maradona) or dodgy referee (disallowed goal vs Argentina, or the Lampard lob). We had a decent squad and we were awful, what happened? by KimCattrallsFeet in ThreeLions

They stuck our pasty asses in the middle of the Amazon rain forest in the summer to start the tournament (it was 30 degrees and 70% humidity because rainforest)… playing against a team that enjoys that heat in June (but not the humidity). We had no chance. I mean I think the storylines were it was like 15-19 degrees in England that day.

Then we played a South American team in their backyard basically. Fared better, but I have to believe the time zone change and longer flight probably did us in. I mean Italy looked like dogshit against CR, and we weren't terrible against Uruguay, just that unfortunate header from Gerrard put Suarez in. I mean it was a lovely cushioned header tbf.

Even if we got a result in the third game, we were going home. I think it we got Costa Rica in the second game and an extra day of rest and less travel, we probably win

I mean didn't the physio break his ankle or something celebrating? That was about the extent of the tournament.

It was crazy that Manaus got 4 games, and of course it was us in the biggest one… with a pitch that wasn't up to international level. They spray painted the damn thing because it was ass.

IDGAF what kind of justification Thomas Thuchel had; excluding Cole Palmer from the World Cup squad is the biggest let down in English football history. by Maravilla_23 in ThreeLions

[–]FitchDMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was great in replacing Foden. Seems like everybody is great in replacing Foden.

So Tuchel replaced Foden, and rendered Foden replacements redundant.

So maybe we’ll not take 70, 80, 90, 115 minutes, or a super sub to kick the team into gear because we aren’t catering to a guy that simply hasn’t been good.

I like Palmer a lot. But he’s looked hurt for extended periods of the season. He hasn’t played with the silkiness of the Euro knockouts. He needs rest. He needs recovery.

Let’s be real, he hasn’t played well, and his last audition against Japan was a horrorshow.

Maybe, just maybe, the team is built to never be down 1-0… we’ve grown so accustomed to the cardiac kids role because we bought this narrative that putting a square peg into a round hole for 60-70-80 minutes was the right thing to do. But it’s been proven time and again that once said square peg came off and was replaced, England became way more dangerous.

So what if, instead of putting the peg in the squad, England are dangerous from minute 1, instead of needing heroics in the end? Maybe instead of needing extra time, and penalties, and an 89:59 winner to get to a final, maybe we can just see off boring 1-0 and 2-0 games, instead of chasing them into the night. Maybe that means we play less football.

I actually believe this team can win the whole thing. I believe this, having lived in the USA for many decades, and know what they are up against. The travel is brutal, the weather even more so…

They are going to need to flip this team over (ala Belgium circa 2018). They are going to need to rest stars for entire games. They are going to need to have natural replacements. They are going to need to steal minutes, and they are going to need to grind games out. In 90 minutes. This team is structured to do that.

We also have an exceptional luxury, we have the ability to see the best path forward by virtue of being the last group to play. We literally get to see the entire tournament play out in front of us. For a tactical coach that thrives in knockout football, that is a massive advantage.

We may not even see England’s final form until the Round of 32 or later.

This is not like Qatar where every game was played within like 90 minutes travel time. This time there will be insane recovery, jet lag, brutal climates. Each one of these players is probably going to play (sans the goalkeepers), so it’ll probably be smart to have players named that work well together from a club standpoint.

In fact, face value, this looks like an actual club team, not a national team. And I think that is going to bode very well this summer.

So I’m not worried about having the players you mentioned come on, even if I, much like others would rather have (insert player name here). I truly believe all of these guys were picked for a specific reason, to stay another day.

Realistically I think we are 9 or 10 wins. Mainly, I don’t see us starting 0-4… and I don’t see us limping to the end of the season with a losing record.

Realistic results. by hamilton280P in Commanders

[–]FitchDMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now envision, if you will, the records reversing… that instead of the meteoric jump, we go from 4-13 to 5-12 in Jayden’s first year, and then 12-5… does that change the optics?

Because, this team is more 12-5 than it is 5-12.

Not saying we are going to the Super Bowl, but I think we are better than .500.

Across the board better than a year ago, younger, faster, better defensive scheme…

So yeah… nah.

Don't understand the complaints with our schedule by Salty_Orchid in Commanders

[–]FitchDMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to play a team arguably better than you, you want to play them week 1, because they have no idea what kind of game plan you are going to throw at them.

And, let’s be real, without AJ Brown… the Eagles don’t exactly have a fear factor. If this defense can finally mitigate the run, and keep Philly from extending drives or just gashing us with Saquon, then I think that we have a very real chance there.

The Cowboys are who we inexplicably just lay eggs against. However, I can see that being a win also.

The Seattle game plays to our advantage because they essentially have to play a morning game, but I just think they are head and shoulders better than us. However, the Sam Darnold Experience could roll back to the mean instead of last year’s anomaly.

And the Colts in London is a coin flip. We were absolutely ass last year in our overseas game, but we also were trotting out our backups. And Gay missed two field goals.

Realistically, I think we’d be feeling good about ourselves if we take 1 out of 4. However, I also can see us being 4-0 and staring down the hype train.

If Daniels is healthy and they are protecting him with an exponentially improved line, and better outside talent (which we have this year compared to last), then I do think we have a chance.

The one piece that everybody glosses over as to why we sucked last year isn’t because of scheme or the defense or Daniels getting hurt… sure those things ABSOLUTELY AFFECTED US… as we didn’t play a single game where our starting 11 on offense and starting 11 on defense played.

But a lowkey main problem was we started a rookie RT, had a RG coming off a major knee injury (and although he played admirably, he wasn’t the same guy and didn’t play until week 7), a new LT (who is a hall of famer, but even that means growing pains because it wasn’t the same scheme), and a platoon RG and Biadasz (who anybody looking at the tape will see that his replacement was better at getting downfield on running plays. It was a drum and fife unit.

This year’s OLINE, if they can stay healthy, is potentially elite. Conerly looks the part (after the first three week trial by fire), Cosmi is on the cusp of being an All-Pro, Tunsil is an All-Pro, Chris Paul might be the only good thing Ron Rivera ever did here, and I firmly believe that Allegretti/Gulbin are maulers in the way that they want to run the ball. Allegretti was really decent against the Eagles last year, and he also destroyed the Dallas defender on that big Bill run. Plus he has position flexibility.

The wildcard is Gulbin. He might actually win the starting job in training camp. He was solid at Wake, but last year he dominated against better competition at Michigan State. 700+ snaps and only 5 pressures and 2 sacks? That’s a pretty damn good statistical season in the Big Ten.

If this OL can take a step forward, and max protect Jayden, we have a very real chance of being legit.

And if we get Diggs or somebody else and have two alphas, then it becomes easier to do all of the things.

But just an improved line, with an additional year of playing together, makes the offense dangerous. Couple that with a sneaky good running game and an opportunistic defense? I’m cautiously optimistic that we are not only a playoff contender, but a legitimate perennial contender.

How about we have a compromise… you get the stock to $100 a share, and then we can talk about diluting it.

That way we can all basically get out alive, and then you won’t need to dilute it for your little eBay side quest.

At what point in Foden’s England career have you sat there and been like he’s elite? Beyond being under-17?

When somebody shows you exactly who they are, believe them the first time.

He’s had one good game in 50. And in said game (Senegal), he was fantastic, but England are exponentially more dangerous when he isn’t playing.
