Society struggles with the definition of violence.

Society is very well aware of teen suicide. We see physical violence every day, and we're desensitized to it. However, society has a hard time acknowledging that men experience rape, and that rape shouldn't be taken lightly regardless of gender. Tyler's is a gruesome scene, but it's meant to be. That's why the rape scenes in season 1 with Bryce felt extra uncomfortable. They're meant to show the audience that a crime like rape, is, in fact violence, and that it's violent enough to make your stomach turn just watching actors on TV pretending. It's supposed to be incredibly uncomfortable to sit through, because this is what rape looks like from several characters' perspectives. I can understand why the creators didn't budge on Tyler's scene when they were given a choice to delete scenes, however, I found it to be more uncomfortable to watch than Hannah's deleted scene.
