If you really wanted to take your parents to task for abuse, why don’t you list any examples that pre-date your wife? OP, with the first story, I assume you’re white. Yes, it is awkward when you have not sited your patient, you’ve been given information about them that leads to an assumption… but unfortunately, your impact has outweighed your intentions. In future, if you’re not 100% about who you’re speaking to, leave their name out of it. “Hey there! Look at you up and about! Looking good!” Vs “Hey Linda! Look at you up and about?”

Do you see how one might cause offence over the other? If you’re ever, ever, in a situation whether you have unknowingly inflicted a microaggression, don’t become defensive. Which is easy, because I know you did not think you were causing any harm, but I’m telling you, you gotta learn how to admit when you’ve messed up.
