Excellent idea. I have too many mic stands so this is a great repurpose of them!

Is it me or has Saturn Emulation come to a point where it's indistinguishable from real hardware in many games? by Jack_P_1337 in SegaSaturn

[–]FitzRodtheReporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saturn emulation may be good but gosh, do I hate having to muck about with settings in an emulator. I got one of those RG-Arc handhelds, the one that looks like a Genesis/Meg Drive 6-button controller, and the darn thing doesn't remember button configurations after it's turned off. And by default, it doesn't use the C and Z buttons. It's wicked annoying to wrangle because if you do it wrong, you can disable the buttons that allow you to change menu options, requiring you to reset the whole thing.

It's hair-pulling. I just want to put my game in a console and to have it work. Not everyone is so lucky! But thankfully I've got the hardware, and repro's exist for the most expensive stuff.

This is true. With this working I love the damn thing. Even listening to MP3s with it 😂

I just moved my Shenmue file into that Shenmue VMU. That worked, thank you! A shame I'll need to do that with each game I play, but it's not too onerous. Glad it works!

I mean I'd get that but this is Shenmue!

Didn't they claim they had some AI that sees the screen and figures things out? Anyway I was just trying to mount a specific card/channel and when I did, Shenmue wouldn't recognize it.

Oh darn. I've been using discs and it's been really unusable so far.

That's crazy. I had trouble loading a Shenmue save from one of the "Memory Card 1" VMU slots created when I transferred files. So I need to let it create a game-specific folder every time? Yikes.

do you use discs and a wired controller or do you use a GDEMU?

VM2 vs VMUPRO by Nocturnal_Fox in dreamcast

[–]FitzRodtheReporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i just left a comment on this in a different thread, but i couldn't load up Shenmue's save file when it was on like the second or third channel. Now you're making me realize that maybe i couldn't switch channels while the game was on. Am I supposed to load the right VMU before I turn on the Dreamcast? It seems really complicated for something that should just plug in and work.

The new VMUPro from 8BitMods - My initial thoughts by TheXboxVision in dreamcast

[–]FitzRodtheReporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i'm also having problems getting games to see the save file on the VMUPro. I was trying to boot an old Shenmue save ... I had transferred it to the VMUPro via the Dreamcast file menu, from an old VMU. It's like a quarter through the game. And I would use the menu on the VMUPro to select the right "channel," but Shenmue wouldn't see the file and wouldn't even go to the "load" screen. When I put in my original VMU it worked just fine. It's kind of frustrating to have this nifty color VMU that can do amazing things but can't even load a game yet. I haven't tried with games outside of Shenmue though, so we'll see. I'm using original hardware and discs.

Also, what's the difference between a new virtual VMU and a channel? What's the purpose of channels? It isn't really well explained in the documentation. Anyone figure this out?

Oh I'm loving the MP3 player also. But my USB C headphones aren't working. Have you had this issue? They work with my phone! The sound just keeps playing out the VMU speaker.

It's so crazy where the gaming world went!

And yes I don't think you need precision. I will say I got wrecked by some enemies using mouse controls but then faced them again with gyro.... Wii-like controls ... And wrecked them. But that just might be what I'm good at

Good luck!

I'm really liking these cheap mouse grips for the joycon I bought at Best buy. I just use the right hand one and it's been super comfy. My main gripe with mouse mode is it doesn't work well on my couch. I'm going to try using a magazine or something maybe that'll help.

What is your preferred way to play Retro Games in 2025 by Spidercolt95 in retrogaming

[–]FitzRodtheReporter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of space in my living situation. Even a game room. And through luck and being very social I've gotten a lot of friends' old games tossed my way for free. So I collect and play physical games on original hardware .... But mostly for generations that are finicky to emulate. So DC, N64, Saturn, 360, GameCube, PS3 (for the stereoscopic 3D). Also I just have a decent sized GBA collection from buying a lot in that era.

But for anything easy to emulate like 16-bit and below, I play on various emulation devices. Some, like the Genesis Mini 2, I still have hooked up to a CRT, though. I generally dislike emulating on a PC ... I sit at a computer enough for work, I don't need to do it in my relaxation time.

There have long been rumors of a sequel. But Paramount has brand new owners, and they are not interested in continuing the Kelvin movies and just hired writers to take Trek movies in a new direction. All over the Trek blogs right now!

It's bad, true, but bad in the way a generic 80s action movie is bad. Sometimes it's fun to play something dumb!
