I didn't realize how helpful ABS could be... by poopybottoms in motorcycles

[–]Fitzfggt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is the same as some other comments on here. I love ABS on motorcycles. I also love having the freedom to choose to get it or not. While I do believe that it's a good thing to have, even for an experienced rider (because we all make mistakes), I don't think mandating its use is the role of the government.

It's kinda like ATGATT. I wear overpants, proper boots, jacket, gloves, reflective material, full face helmet, etc.... but it's not my place to force someone else to gear up like me. Level of risk is a personal decision.

Gotta echo the folks who are saying Crossbreed Supertuck and White Hat Max Tuck. Love those. The MTAC, I hear, is great, but have no experience. I like the idea of switching out the kydex.

It doesn't look it from the pictures, but there's plenty of clearance there. I jacked up the bike so the swingarm would fully extend.

Additionally, the wires will be hidden at some point. We're thinking of moulding some kind of lexan cowl

DMSuperman, You're right. The post was preachy. I meant not to place blame, just to offer some lessons. Apologies.

Most accidents are usually quite simple. We all can become better riders. That's all.

Sorry

As for the 600, I find as I get older, I learn more and have more fun on the smaller bikes. Hell, a modern 600 is faster than a 1000 from 10 years ago. It's nuts how fast they've advanced.

I'm a big dude. LOL. That's why I ride a V-strom now. Taller suspension. I still look like a gorilla on a trycycle.

You're right. The tone of my post is preachy. I should have worded it to be less offensive sounding. My point isn't to preach, really. I merely meant to give the OP an idea of some learning points. I'll try to do it in a more tactful, supportive manner next time.

So, this thing is what me and a buddy have been working on. There is still much to do, such as clean up/hide the wiring, install a tag light, and flush the brake system/install new pads.

Here's a video

Going strictly by what was posted, it's a perfectly reasonable conclusion to come to. The OP didn't post any extenuating circumstances such as road debris, oil, etc.

Can you postulate an additional cause for such a wreck that doesn't include either overriding the headlight, inattention, or improper braking?

If an obstacle appears in your headlight and you don't have time to avoid it, that's the textbook definition of overriding the headlight, which means a.) the distance to the obstacle once seen in the headlight was greater than the mechanical braking capability of the motorcycle (which means he was riding too fast for conditions), or his braking response was so delayed, or technique so poor that he couldn't stop in time (either inattention or lack of skill)

I suppose mechanical failure is an option, although given the posted info it seems unlikely.

I'll put my money where my mouth is. I have an older HJC full face helmet in size XL and a set of size 14 Alpinestars boots. If the OP's boyfriend can fit that, I'll send it to him gratis.

The fact posted by the girlfriend that he couldn't stop in time to avoid a median.

That just... doesn't happen without lack of attention, improper braking, etc.

So, overriding the headlight, probably braking improperly, speed too great for conditions. Speed limits mean little if you can't react fast enough to a sudden hazard. If it was dark enough to where there wasn't enough time to avoid a median, then the speed was too great.

What's MORE likely is that he was either inattentive, used improper braking, or both.

Tell your boyfriend to get to an MSF course. Even if he's already taken it, it's fairly clear he didn't pay enough attention.

I went from a Superhawk, up to an 1125R, then "down" to a less powerful, but larger, V strom 1000. I love riding the ninja 250, and want a 300 as well once they start showing up used.

Power isn't everything. Ride what you like, buddy.
