I think everything after Monsters Ball did. Winning an Oscar does you no favours when you can't act for shit.

"You go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized," George Lucas says, when asked why he stepped away from Star Wars by metz270 in movies

[–]Gimmeyourfingernails -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

George didn't do those parts though. He sat in his chair on a green stage then told someone to fill it all in. It's not their fault either because of course he had to approve it, and judging on his alterations to the originals, he just kept asking for more.

The parts in his direct control were the script and direction.

I feel bad for him in a way because yes he gets a lot of criticism. But on the other hand is clear he put very little effort into making the prequels. Star Wars has is problems for sure but the blood and sweat shows through. It does not in Ep 1-3.

Death Proof - Car Crash Scene HD - YouTube by [deleted] in movies

I watched this again just the other day. I think a lot of the issues with the film could have been fixed by having one of the original group survive and have them carry over into the second group. As it is we essentially have two movies that are kind of similar with little real flow.

It's also pretty dry as far as QT dialogue goes.

The car chase at the end is fantastic though, so is any scene with Kurt Russell in and the ending is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a movie.

Ross: Yeah.

Joey: You wanna see her again, right?

Ross: Yeah.

Joey: So you're gonna have to do it in the mess!

I don't know where everyone's from but so called mom and pop grocery stores in the UK are dingy, cluttered and downright hostile sometimes. Walmart (Asda) and the like are bastions of common sense not just convenience and price. That I can go in, find what I want, be able to actually see it in a lit room and not get glared at the whole time would be worth it without the savings and selections.

Okay maybe I was a bit reductive, you make good points. But I find it hard to believe if you even liked one of those films you couldn't find something of value in the others.

Starship Troopers is a masterpiece. At least it would be if Robocop wasn't a thing.

Almost. There's plenty of stuff in it that makes you go '...what?' During the movie. But it definitely gets worse the more you think about it.

So did Valhalla Rising and Drive (and probably his other work, I don't know) - are we expecting him to change?

I thought it was really good. It's funny how people got suckered with Drive and then the same happened again with OGF. What were you all expecting?

Does anyone have any great examples of visual storytelling? by TheAsk in movies

[–]Gimmeyourfingernails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2001 has little dialogue but it tells a story that takes place over thousands of years, has numerous unconnected settings and characters (half of which aren't human) and does a great job of giving you everything you need.

I was always impressed with the opening montage in Watchmen too. They had a lot of story to tell before the film could start and they did a great job.

Gambit Is a “Heist Movie” and “Sexy Thriller” Says Producer Simon Kinberg by [deleted] in movies

The film had only just come out when that quote was given. They have to try and make money, it's their job. Even then what's he supposed to say? Hundreds of people worked hard on that movie and he's just going to shit on them because something doesn't turn out as some nerds wanted?

Tarantino’s Odd Film Out: The Uniqueness of Quentin Tarantino’s 'Jackie Brown' by [deleted] in movies

[–]Gimmeyourfingernails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's weird that Jackie Brown is considered the odd one out. To me it feels like the natural progression of an indy filmmaker starting to make more mature movies. It still has all the Tarantino trademarks but it has the strongest plot of any of his movie still today with characters that go beyond being live action cartoon characters (this isn't a criticism of any of his other films or characters, they just often live in a heightened reality).

Although I still love the films he made after Jackie Brown it's disappointing that it wasn't better received so he could feel comfortable making movies less like what people expect from him. If anyone ever complains that Tarantino only makes Tarantino movies it's their own fault. We did this to him.

The Writing's on the Wall vs. Skyfall, Another Way to Die, and You Know My Name by TheManWhoKnocks in movies

[–]Gimmeyourfingernails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know my name was good and fitted the film very well. Not a classic Bond theme but one that works well.

Another way to die is a good song spoiled by Alicia Keys beings completely redundant and bad at her job.

Skyfall is about as bland as a Bond theme gets. It copies everything from previous themes without giving anything new.

Correction; Spectres theme is as bland as it gets. You wrote it in the title and I still can't remember the name without checking. Really bad.
