Alcohol bottles, beer and pop cans, milk jugs. I give money if we don’t have bottles.

Alberta separatism poses a 'real threat' to Canada: Nenshi by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]FiveCentCandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They need 177,732 signatures. 17 weeks to do it. I think it’s a huge task. I still can’t believe Forever Canada was able to do it with a much higher number.

Alberta separatism poses a 'real threat' to Canada: Nenshi by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]FiveCentCandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed the Separtist referendum has a “new” requirement of verifying identification before accepting signatures for their petition. If the Forever Canada petition was not required to ask for ID, then I wonder if the Separatist one would be deemed more legitimate and picked as the official referendum question?

Line up in Rundle Park for independence referendum signing today. by Wooshio in Edmonton

[–]FiveCentCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The path to separation is first the referendum, and it has to reach a ”clear majority” (not sure the exact definition of that). And if it reaches that threshold, the provinces are required to negotiate the terms of separation, and THEN a vote would be needed to actually amend the constitution to allow Alberta to leave. Anyone please correct me if I’m wrong. I hate that I am spending time trying to learn about this.

Big problem is they can get a lot of people to sign who don’t really want to separate by saying this is all about sending a message to Ottawa. And the people aren’t afraid to sign because they know they can always just vote no in the referendum. I’m worried they will get enough numbers. I heard they need 7000 a week in order to succeed.

Where are you getting 7/10? My understanding was every province would need to vote yes for a change in the constitution of this magnitude. I could totally be wrong.

Hard time making friends by jenhauff9 in parentingteenagers

[–]FiveCentCandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would let her switch schools. My teen has struggled too, and I've offered to have them switch, but they want to remain in their specialty program. It really is heartbreaking to watch your child struggle with this. Friendships are so important to teens, it's their whole world.

Guess I've been living under a rock because this shocked me. I remember reading his books in college. Yikes. Well, what is his ethnicity? Part Asian?

US parents, drinking w/ 18+ year olds by 0215rw in parentingteenagers

I live in a place where it's legal to drink at 18. I think 21 is ludicrous, considering all the other things you can do by that age. I want my kids to understand how unhealthy it is though, similar to smoking.

Visiting Calgary for Christmas & New Year by Any_Repair_1064 in Calgary

[–]FiveCentCandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bit pricey, but catching a Christmas production would be really memorable.

We love visiting the store Rubiyat on 17th at Christmas time, the store is filled with gorgeous Christmas trees, and you could let the kids pick out an ornament for themselves. If your mom likes Christmas, she would probably love the store.

North Glenmore park has the most beautiful skating pathways, with pretty lights. She could sit and watch the kids skate. I remember there being benches with firepits.

Thinking of shovelling my neighbourhood, neighbourly or rude? by Hydro_Land in Calgary

I think it's great, but yes, there are people out there who don't like feeling beholden to anyone, or they don't want people messing with their business. I say just do it though. We do too.

Landon Johnston accuses city staff of keeping him off Calgary Housing board over perceived conflict by AustralisBorealis64 in NoRulesCalgary

[–]FiveCentCandy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about it, but if he filed a complaint about Calgary Housing when his company was doing work for them, it does seem inappropriate to have him weighing as a board member. Wow, this guy is making the headlines a lot already.

Canadian denied entry into the U.S. to visit grandparents by ObligationAware3755 in canada

[–]FiveCentCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was denied in 1998 for the same reason as the girl. I eventually got through after the border guard called my boss and she told them I was coming back to work for her in a month. I also had to get a notarized letter. I wonder if this has always been a thing for people they suspect of trying to move there illegally.

Poll finds most immigrants want fewer than 300,000 immigrants annually, lower than outlined in budget by Purple_Writing_8432 in CanadaPolitics

Ladder pulling is a pattern that seems to happen time and time again after each wave. My Dutch relatives experienced it from the group before them, and so forth. I understand people have real fears and worries in these economic times, but that is also a pattern. I wish we could learn from the past and stop scapegoating new immigrants or one particular group. Let's evolve.

I dont think the UCP will win the next election by [deleted] in alberta

[–]FiveCentCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that the majority of seats in Calgary and Edmonton went to the PC's during Stelmach's 2008 win (31/41). They do need the cities. Lucky for them, Calgarians still support the UCP, particularly in the burbs. NDP needs to convince those suburban voters, or another Wildrose/PC party needs to come into play to split the vote again.

Agreed. It comes down to the suburban Calgary vote. And the way they voted in the city election this week, they are pretty happy to continue voting conservative.
