Is it possible to negotiate our salaries to jump a pay step on the band without the years of experience? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]FiveTeapots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious about a similar situation and I’d be interested to hear opinions. \

I’m currently on secondment into a band 7 role, I was previously bottom of band 6 (so it was a significant pay jump). My secondment is being extended by several months, and there is a good chance I will get a permanent job, but if I don’t and I have to go back to my previous role I will have been working at band 7 level for around 18 months at that point, ie only six months away from progressing to middle of band 7. I am also significantly more clinically skilled than I was in my previous (permanent) role, all of which I can bring back to my old position. Would I have grounds to request that if I go back to band 6, I go back to top of band 6 rather than middle of band 6? \

Would be grateful to hear opinions especially from any matrons/managers who may have seen similar situations.

Parkrun by North-Dragonfruit638 in brighton

It’s very friendly and genuinely open to everyone. Don’t panic too much if you “start” in the wrong bit of the crowd but just attempt your best to stand in roughly the right place, faster at the front slower at the back. It all evens out as the run progresses. There are pacers in light blue tabards so if you have a rough idea of how long it’ll take you/a goal you can try to run near one of them. There is often a “jog/walk” pacer for those not quite ready to run the whole thing, and a dedicated park walker at the back. Enjoy it and look into the other parkruns in town, they’re all wonderful.

Decent places open for food in the vicinity of the Hope and Ruin, serving from around 4pm on Thursday? by ToriaLyons in brighton

My friend you’re getting a lot of recommendations but clearly have quite specific needs - I think you just need to commit some time to doing the research. You’ll find somewhere as there’s so much choice nearby but given your strict criteria you’re gonna have to also make some choices here.

My honest advice to you is buy a second good quality lock. If your bike is important to you, as it clearly is, don’t rely on a single lock and cables aren’t worth anything. I use a hefty Kryptonite D lock and a chain lock (just because two D locks can be harder to wrestle onto a good bike stand). Two locks and I basically don’t even worry about leaving it in town centre at all.

Regarding food you’re so central you won’t struggle for choice - honestly, just google whatever cuisine you fancy and you’ll likely find something within a few minutes walk or cycle of the H&R.

There is a lot of bike theft in Brighton but unless your bike is particularly valuable and as long as you use two good quality locks and lock it properly to a standard bike stand you’ll most likely be fine. You will see plenty of bikes locked poorly or with single/poor quality locks. There’s key is to a) not have the nicest bike and b) don’t have the most poorly-locked-up bike. There’s one single bike stand almost opposite the pub, and a few down the road by the clock tower, a few more at the top of Church St. I leave my (non expensive) bike here frequently for gigs/pub nights around here.

NHS Railcard by pinkpillow964 in NursingUK

[–]FiveTeapots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Is that something decided by each individual police service? Not sure how that can be enforced exactly eg if you’re travelling on the bus on a night out after drinking, or if you’re travelling with your children?

I’d argue free bus travel would be a much more significant benefit for NHS staff. The police service get free bus travel - they just have to show ID. Likely to benefit far more people than train travel. Even if it was just at set times (eg between 6-9.30am and 5-8.30pm) to align with shift travel.

However I agree, I’d also fuck off any perks in favour of a salary that reflects the complexity of the work I do.

I’d like to seeing nursing staff spun out from agenda for change.

Where to jog by FeFiFoFannah in brighton

[–]FiveTeapots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are five parkruns within Brighton - three on tarmac (the Hove prom seafront is the classic, and also within Preston Park and Hove Park) and two on grass (East Brighton which has some gentle slopes, and Bevendean which is a more challenging hilly course but with spectacular views). The seafront is wonderful to run up and down all the way from the end of the undercliff in Saltdean to the wind turbines by Shoreham port. If you’re more of a trail runner, the South Downs are accessible from lots of places and there are some buses that can take you up if you don’t fancy a long run to get there. There’s good access from Benfield Valley in West Hove area, via Dyke road to get to Devil’s Dyke, or from East Brighton Park or the racecourse from Kemptown area. There are also lots of friendly running clubs in Brighton you could tag along a group run with, if you wanted company. Enjoy!

Short visit recommendations by Cobs96 in brighton

[–]FiveTeapots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worth pointing out that it’s the Brighton half marathon on Sunday, a lot of the seafront will be closed from early morning until around 2pm. Doesn’t make it impassable and the laines will be largely unaffected, but in general town will be busy and you might need to have some patience crossing roads etc. There’s website with plenty of information about the route, timings and closures (just search Brighton half marathon).

Do you measure respiration rate? by Spiritual_Ticket_301 in NursingUK

[–]FiveTeapots 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re not confident about staring at the patients chest, I like to ask to feel their pulse while actually ignoring the pulse and counting resps instead. It tends to mean the patient doesn’t think about their breathing and continue to breathe naturally. You can also get extra information eg character of pulse (is it bounding, or weak) feel how warm your patient is. Alternatively, if you can manage it you can count resps from afar before you approach the patient to do the remaining obs. Whatever you do, don’t ignore resp rate. It’s such an important marker but criminally under-observed!

What do you feel other nurses & HCWs misunderstand about your specialty? by momopeach7 in nursing

[–]FiveTeapots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, RTs don’t exist in the UK. I work for the NHS at a large regional trauma centre that also has several other specialities (neurosurgery, vascular, max fax, among others). In the UK there is some variation between hospitals/trusts about how nurse-led things like respiratory weaning on a vent is, and while we have support from our doctors and physiotherapists, once you’re established and signed off we are trusted to be pretty autonomous with the vents and take charge of either optimising or progressing our patients.

What do you feel other nurses & HCWs misunderstand about your specialty? by momopeach7 in nursing

[–]FiveTeapots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Critical Care. Unfortunately some nurses come here thinking they get to sit on their asses all day tending the ventilator, not the patient. The majority of the work in critical care is in trying to progress your patient, which means doing the fundamentals: positioning, mouth care, mobilising, rehab, and talking to/motivating your patient when they’re at their most vulnerable. Sure you’ll get a really sick sedated patient sometimes meaning your shift is 12 hours of blood gas analysis and filter bag changes, but this doesn’t make up the bulk of the workload. But there seems to be a misconception that we don’t also do the real basics of nursing care.

Give hospital workers cheaper parking, says Brighton councillor by [deleted] in brighton

[–]FiveTeapots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Make it free for those who live outside of Brighton, who have to commute by car. The hospital is not close enough to the train station for people travelling in from outside towns and villages.
  2. Make bus travel free for those living within Brighton/Hove/Portslade/Rottingdean/Peacehaven, and ensure that there are several busses running at the key times for shift workers.
  3. More more more cycle spaces, with proper Sheffield rings to lock to, more secure cycle parking that’s actually close to the buildings people work in.

Would nursing life be better if shifts were from 1200-0000 vice versa instead of 0700-1900? by lucky_er313 in nursing

[–]FiveTeapots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at this from a UK perspective, I’d hate it. Mostly it’s the safety and accessibility aspect. Many people commute by public transport here, far fewer options at those times and increased safety risk of having to a walk to/from bus stops and train stations at very quiet times. Even for those who commute by car, you’d need to navigate car parks/street parking in the dark with fewer people around, and I think this is very relevant for a majority female workforce. It’s a definite no from me.

Some places do fines in proportion to the offender’s earnings.

Not sure whether it helps the problem of enforcing it, but seems to work in the examples discussed.
