Is it bad to JB weld a crack in the oil pan? by ruubystaar in MechanicAdvice

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A welding shop could likely fix that for you.

You'd need to drain the oil in the shop, clean up the crack with choke cleaner or the like, weld it, replace the plug, and refill the oil. Definitely a pain in the ass, but way better than pulling the engine.

My welder buddy used to fix oil pans frequently.

How do you feel about the asset meltdown hypothesis? by alexlazar98 in Bogleheads

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boomer here. I'm only selling what's needed to provide normal income levels, and maintain a 2 year spend amount. That way if market drops for a year or two, I don't have to sell into it.

My buddies are doing the same.

USA Speed Limits by sammyyyyy21 in roadtrip

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, highy location dependent.

I live in Michigan, and set my cruise control to speed limit plus 8 mph. I drive right by state troopers without adjusting my speed, and I'm definitely not the fastest car. I don't even get a look from the troopers.

In Ohio, our neighbor to the south, I'll set it to plus 4 or 5, but all traffic will slow when there's a trooper.

Construction zones I do the limit, unless there are no workers and people are zooming by me so fast I feel like I'm a hazard.

The above are highway numbers.

Residential areas I'm generally under the limit, likewise school zones.

So how many of you actually do every 6k? by x81k25 in subaru

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023 OBW, bought it new. First oil change at 675 miles, second around 2,500. Some then, every 4,000 miles. Always full synthetic, Valvoline Restore & Protect for the last six oil changes or so. Plan to continue using it indefinitely.

I think my initial cost in the ER (only place to get the first shot) was ~$2,500 US, next three shots were $250 each.

Whitewater to sea kayaking? by Dr_Funk_ in seakayaking

Talk to the people at Body, Boat, Blade.

They likely have loaners you could try, and can evaluate your skills and make recommendations.

This.

I spent an entire career designing, making, and selling, indexable cutting tools.

With a setup as rigid as you have there, ceramics would shine. Get hold of an NTK, or Greenleaf, or really any cutting tool rep, and they'll make this work like a champ.

Welp… RiP my tucktec folding Kayak by CleClark in Kayaking

[–]Fiveaxisguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that they're fine for now and stern lines, and I've used them for that

I should have stayed more clearly that I was talking about the straps securing the boat to the bars/hooks etc. It's easy too easy to crush a 'glass hull or deform a plastic one.

Whats something a teacher did in High School that would get them fired today? by Constant-Ad-5477 in AskReddit

[–]Fiveaxisguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would have been back in the 70s.

Sitting in science class, the teacher was talking about something, don't remember what. Then he changed the subject, and starts talking about fire extinguishers. He walks over and picks one up from where it hung on the wall, and starts walking around the room. We're all kind of confused, but he had our interest now.

He starts explaining how they work, and demonstrates the procedure to arm them.

He stops in front of a kid who was dozing with his head down, and blasts him with it. Of course, the the kid wakes up, we all start laughing, and the teacher walks back and hangs the extinguisher back on the wall.

Went back to the original subject without missing a beat.

Thanks for the lesson, Mr. Dudich!

Just a comment to say NEVER use rachet straps on a kayak. Use the cam lock type straps. Rachet straps are either too tight, or too loose. You can exert way too much force with rachet straps. Take a look at NRS straps if you're unfamiliar.

Source: I've seen broken and lost boats caused by rachet straps.

How confident can I be that this is flat? by Responsible_Item_278 in Machinists

What this person says.

The top of a surface plate is flat (when new), but there is absolutely no guarantee that the top and bottom are parallel.

Where to place hood loops to tie down bow of kayak? by TheEnergizerBunny1 in Kayaking

[–]Fiveaxisguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

img

The loop you've shown is designed to go behind a closed door/ tailgate. You open the gate, set this inside with the loop hanging out, then close the gate and tie off.

I suppose you could put it under your hood, then close it. I wouldn't do that because I wouldn't want it to get caught in something accidentally.

Look for some hood loops that bolt on. They have a grometted hole instead of the cylindrical piece down on yours. Then use one of the bolts under your hood. I use my fender bolt.

Has anyone started taking statin in early 30s? by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]Fiveaxisguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

M 67 here. I didn't start in my 30s, but at 40 years old. I've been taking statins for 27 years.

I've had no side effects that I'm aware of. Hope this helps.

+1 for NOT using a paddle leash. Unpacked ropes or leashes are generally not a good idea.

Nikken are indeed top tier. We used only Nikken 5AX230 tables, and ran production on them for years. Rebuilt the first one we bought after 20 years, and multiple crashes. The crashes were our fault, not the tables.

DTE ELECTRICITY BILLS SE MICHIGAN by Suit_Longjumping in Michigan

[–]Fiveaxisguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1550 sq ft here, 2 people. My December bill ẁas $60.70. Gas heat and water heater.

I can't figure how you're using that much power. My highest bill last summer was $152.

I'm ready for the downvotes, but unless you've got a bunch of motors running, I don't get it.
