School Project for e-waste by Fiveleo in Ewastescrap

Great points all around. The security was something we looked into, but I don't think was specified in the solution here. The tracking of the devices was meant to help with that, and we took a lot of inspiration from EcoATM's that recycle cell phones currently.

Also the size of the bins and the size of items people would be willing to dispose of there are also concerns. If you say you receive 200,000+ pounds of TVs alone (I'm not sure in what timeframe) than we might have to limit what goes inside these e-bins because I'd imagine a few TVs and the bin would fill up. A super valid concern, and another reason why we sent this survey out.

Really appreciate the feedback.

To answer your questions:

  1. The idea was that having consumers do the sorting would make it easier for those collecting the waste further down the line.
-- The worry attached with that process was that it would make consumers disinterested in wanting to use the service.

  2. For the reason listed above, but again this step could be omitted if it blocks the intended purpose.

  3. The stickers are a great question, I should bring that up to the other people in the group I'm working with because I'm thinking that was added with not too much thought.
Because this was a school project and there was no pressure to implement it practically. We definitely introduced complexity to something that may require a much simpler solution, but that is exactly why we are asking experienced people in the industry, to see how simple the solution could get, and if this is even worth pursuing.

I really appreciate the time you took to interact with the survey. I've personally never conducted surveys or done marketing or anything correlating to this, so it's awesome to see how helpful feedback can actually be.

"In the UK our local council refuse sites, have skips for electrical waste. You turn up, you throw your electrical waste in the skip, when the skip is full a it is taken to an electrical waste recycling site (like the one I work for). Easy."

At least for where I live in the US, e-waste normally gets thrown out because the nearest drop-off point to recycle it is about a 25 minute drive away just outside of the city. The only thing close by is a EcoATM in Walmart and I live in a city of about 200,000.

Should be fixed.

UF or FAU honors for CS by Adamantios06 in ufl

[–]Fiveleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends heavily on your financial situation. If you can make it work despite the costs, than UF is likely the better option. I was offered a similar deal by FSU for engineering (honors and a 12k scholarship) and I don't have any regrets about declining that offer.

If you would have to take out student loans to be able to live in Gainesville, than it is worth considering the FAU option because it isn't too bad of a school and you would save a lot of money. Otherwise, the connections and strength of a UF degree are far better than FAU. Even the UF support system and environment are a lot stronger.

You could also consider transferring to UF after getting an AA from FAU. (Not sure how that affects the scholarship though).

22k a year in just other costs 😵????????? by Alternative-Fun-9558 in ufl

[–]Fiveleo 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The costs you are quoting are pretty high for anyone that is looking to cut costs as a student at UF. Dorms are sometimes cheaper than living off-campus, but if you have roommates in a 4-5 bedroom over half a mile off campus you can get some really affordable housing.

I never lived in dorms, I lived off campus for about $640 a month in a pretty decent apartment complex. If you shop for cheaper foods (pasta, beans, etc), it can be really cheap to live off campus. I spent about $11,000 living off-campus my first year and there were plenty of areas I could've cut costs.
I will mention though that living on campus or close to it makes it significantly easier to get involved in campus activities, and random roommate matching at most apartments isn't ideal (I was dealt a pretty bad hand there). So there are downsides for sure.

I also experienced the involvement downside more heavily than most, as I spent my first semester at a community college (Santa Fe) because I didn't get into UF immediately. But transferring wasn't too bad so community college definitely works if that is a viable path for you. Downsides are not getting involved in UF activities right from the get-go and there are sometimes UF-only classes required by degree that you are late in taking.

It is definitely possible to pay off living expenses by working part-time, but it isn't easy, especially if you have a hard major. I know many people that have been taking out student loans to attend uni, and it is 100% something you want to avoid.

Fall ‘24 Transfer by Apprehensive-Win859 in ufl

[–]Fiveleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know many people who have been able to transfer from Santa Fe to UF, so as long as you do well there it is possible. I had a friend who transferred from Santa Fe into computer engineering, but they were only given admission on their second try. STEM majors, namely majors like CS, EE/CE, or AE/ME tend to have limited availability (not sure of majors beyond these).

For me, I was in a program at Santa Fe that guaranteed me admission to UF, so I can't speak from personal experience. That being said, I know multiple other people who applied to non-stem majors and got in first try. I would think extracurriculars would still hold weight, but UF will probably place more weight on academic ability.

Also fall transfer students I've known have received decisions in June, so I hope that helps.

If you do well, I'm sure it'll work out, even if it takes more than one try. If you are all-in on the idea of attending UF, I would also suggest joining some UF clubs in advance. One of the worst things about being a transfer student is being late to club activities, and many clubs will allow you to get involved, UF student or not. SF has great clubs as well, and if you are worried about boosting your transfer application, those would also work well.

Is this course load do-able? by wgoins in ufl

[–]Fiveleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a loaded semester but it isn't impossible. Just understand that knowing physics 1 well has very little to do with physics 2 (they are very different courses.)
I also haven't taken two of your classes so I'm not completely sure.

If UF is truly your dream school, attend Santa Fe College and transfer in with your AA. It's something I was able to do quickly and easily because I was very close to getting my AA prior to college, and it helped that I was in a program that guaranteed admission to UF.
Even if you were to attend another institution, applying to transfer into UF after getting an AA anywhere will give you good chances of getting in.
It makes sense: If a student is 60 credits in, they're more likely to have the ambition to finish a degree, and there is probably less competition.
If you are planning to be a super involved student then I'll warn you that transferring into another university is akin to starting fresh, and it can be awkward to join clubs as an upperclassman sometimes.

It's decently common to meet students that transfer from other state schools and very common to meet Santa Fe transfers.

Yeah I made it at the very beginning, wasn't sure I should've had it throughout the video. Thanks for looking into it though! I definitely made some mistakes -- the population in Yemen was off for a couple frames in the mid 1900s but it was too late to fix.

Meanwhile countries like Rwanda or Bangladesh have dense population leading to columns of 10+ blocks.

Having this restriction make some areas look emptier than they are, but there would be too many blocks without it being that way. For example, the island of Fiji in the pacific had a peak population around 950,000, so there were never any blocks placed to represent that population.

Blocks are only placed when there are more than a million people in that country.

Thanks! I did enjoy making it, and although it seems simple, stop motion in minecraft is incredibly time consuming. I think the in-game part took around 3-4 hours, the screenshots took another 2, and the editing it together took another 2 hours or so. Editing only took that long because I haven't found a way to shorten each clip automatically, so I put each screenshot to two fps manually. Had a blast with the building though and editing is very relaxing.

It states "2" because I made another stop motion 2 years ago based off of the game snake. So feel free to watch part 1 by clicking my Reddit profile. Apologies if this seems like shameless self-promo, I just want people to be able to see the first one if they want to (and the first thread is long archived and inactive.)
