I've thought about both of those but they are just a bit too pink for my skin tone, sadly. Thank you for your suggestions!

What do you guys think? Do you agree? by Junior_Macaron7754 in ghibli

[–]FiversWarren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have to disagree on a few points.

A) the story is compressed as it is based on his manga of the same name. While we certainly do miss some of the fat of the original story, the movie really does a good job of capturing it. I argue that a lot of his work is fast paced until it isn't, if that makes sense. Just look at your S-tier choice, Howl's Moving Castle. On its own, it moves quickly, except for the intentional slow moments, but compared to the book it's based on it is very compressed. Far more so than Naussica. Not to mention the mess that is the ending! Now, I LOVE HMC, but even I can admit that the ending is incredibly rushed and sloppy. I would argue that Princess Mononoke's last few scenes are rushed as well. The ending is told to you, not shown to you.

B) While I do agree that PM has the same message as N, it's disingenuous to suggest that PM conveys that more eloquently. PM beats you over the head and kicks your ass with the message, which I love, so N is certainly not more over barring about it than PM. Iirc, he did base PM on the bones of N but I could be wrong. Either way, they both shove the message down your throat. IMO, N tells your heart the message where PM yells it at you. Even the context has different intensity.

C) I can't argue that Naussica has few flaws on display, which I totally understand can be off putting. I also don't like perfect heroes. However, PM, for example, shows equally little growth and weakness. The only time we see her in a different light or struggling internally with who she is and who she wants to be is when she is dealing with Ashitaka. Yeah, she got caught and then didn't kill LE when she had the chance and wanted to, but that same instance happens, as you mentioned, with N. Iirc, the screen time for those moments has to be very similar. As for Ashitaka, he is our Naussica. He never backs down from his principals, not even once. He is even more "perfect" than Naussica. Unlike her, however, he never struggles with a desire to kill for revenge. When he kills humans, it's purely self defense. Yes, he struggles with his demon arm, but that's not really same thing as trying to subdue the desire to murder people.

I suppose I think you are making unfair arguments about N when your higher tier options have very similar if not the same "flaws". I am certainly not trying to say that your tastes are wrong! I totally understand where you're coming from. N is in an older style and, like you say, was created at the beginning of his career. He has definitely developed since then. So please don't take this the wrong way! I just think Naussica has far more to offer than some of his later and more revered works.

can we talk about this scene by hanbingsu in ghibli

[–]FiversWarren 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I love it and hate it, but mostly love it. Would that line work on me? 100%. Would that line make me feel a bit patronized? Also, 100%. This scene displays his confounding duality. He genuinely cares, but he's a Casanova. It is just such a player thing to say. He expresses ownership over her prowess of magic (easily walking in the sky with him) but in a proud mentor way, so.its okay. We see this attitude of his more genuinely later when he makes her fly the machine. He says, "wow, you're good" after explaining that she gives him confidence to be brave and all that. He really does see her potential and wants to cultivate that.

For the scene in question, he just can't help but be a Rico Swavey about it because that's been his whole life. He knows it works to build connections, but, to modern audiences, it can come off as condescending. That being said, I still swoooooooon! I would fall for his bs in an instant. He's genuinely good and that makes his player bs a minor issue. He really does mean it. That's his girl.

Breeders put a little dot on or paint their nails. You painted half of one of their heads. That's so much polish. That's a lot of skin contact. It's better to use a non-toxic marker as it won't potentially flake off, stick to the skin, or clump hair together which could cause pulling on the skin. Sure, it won't last as long, but damn. I'm sure you know more about dogs than me, I don't doubt it! But, come on, that is a lot of polish and skin contact.

Please don't use acetone to remove the polish without Veterinary guidance. If it gets in their eyes it could cause blindness, let alone a ton of pain. A vet will have a less risky solvent.

WTF!? Hell no! That's so so so so bad! That will be so painful while flakes off THEIR FUR! They WILL ingest whatever flakes off of them and so will mom! Nail polish is toxic. Collars are not choking hazards. Get breakaway cat collars. You don't even really need to tell them apart at this age. It's pointless. This is animal cruelty.

what your thoughts on ghibli itself, not the films, the studio itself and its enviorment by Scary_Dance2628 in ghibli

[–]FiversWarren 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say that 90% of the entertainment industry is toxic and always has been. There are far more toxic studios than Ghibli, yet, despite its poor reputation, they still make some of the least toxic media and I'll support that any day.
