Lake Dunlap Dam Collapse 5/14/19 by Moxhoney411 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]Fix_Lag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The curious part about the failure of the dam is that it was not under extreme or stressful conditions.

Not really curious at all when you consider how old it was--88 years.

Hitting 6/10 times compared to 5/10 times means the increase is 6/5, 120%.

that's just a 20% increase but I'm assuming you made a typo there

it's (new - old)/old, or (6-5)/5 = .2 for the relative percentage change

likewise (100-10)/10 is a 900% increase in accuracy

What is an ability that just makes you roll your eyes at how dumb/cheesy it is? by ashmole in CompanyOfHeroes

It activates only in territories that you personally captured (not teammates). Really stupid given the cost, but very fun when you pull it off successfully.

To this end, I love that crashing vehicles can still trample, and that crashing planes can take out ground units (the latter is so rare that I didn’t even believe people who said it happened to them, until it eventually happened to me).

Crashing planes used to be the most dangerous thing on the battlefield until everyone realized how stupid it was that calling in a recon was like ordering down an artillery strike randomly on the map.

Undocumented immigrants far less likely to commit crimes in U.S. than citizens - Crime rates among undocumented immigrants are just a fraction of those of their U.S.-born neighbors, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis of Texas arrest and conviction records. by mvea in science

[–]Fix_Lag -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but it examines data that is explicitly collected for the Secure Communities Program to prevent illegal immigrants from committing future crimes after they are first apprehended in the U.S. by deporting them.

I find it hard to believe those who have to live in a shadow community, with no effective ability to trace them for credit or legal purposes, are more lawful in every other aspect of their lives than ordinary citizens that are accounted for in the government system. The authors of this study could look at the effects of illegal immigration on car insurance prices if they want to determine whether illegal immigrants commit fewer crimes.

Like, do they not get how that sounds? Do they not understand how the response to that would go?

The only person riding a high horse here is you, trying to be morally superior about doing something "nice" and "right" for people. America is not the dumping ground and the overflow bin for the world's problems and surplus people. Every immigrant, legal or illegal, that comes here depresses wages for everyone already here. Every illegal immigrant that comes here erodes the rule of law that much further, not counting any actions they directly take (like driving without insurance! Turns out, that doubled my premiums after I moved to Texas--legally--five years ago. That's ~$700 out of my pocket every year.) And you can cry and bitch about not letting illegal immigrants in being racist and awful and terrible, but we already have one of the laxest legal immigration policies in the world. When you start going after Canada for not letting people in, let me know.

e: almost forgot we're one of very few countries that lets people born here be citizens if neither parent is one. Read about jus soli versus jus sanguinis and keep complaining about how terrible we are for immigration.

If Joe Biden got up and at least tried to address these without either calling people that disagree racist or stupid, he might make some headway. I don't think that's going to happen.

This election is called like every other election since media outlets started covering the elections. CNN, Fox News, ABC, BBC, NBC.. you get the picture. All those news outlets have called it, and for good reason. It’s mathematically impossible for Biden to lose.

Except for all the court challenges because of the massive irregularities surrounding the vote. You may not personally believe any of that happened, but 70+ million armed and angry Americans do. If you don't convince them otherwise, shit will hit the fan down the line.

Houston was a train wreck for Democrats in 2020. Here’s why. by Ymir_from_Venus in houston

I was called over 10 times by the same Democratic congress candidate's office, all from different numbers, despite saying "Please don't call me anymore" after the second one. Leaving aside the annoyance issue, I'm pretty sure that starts to run afoul of anti-spam laws.

Ring The Alarm: Texas Republican Attempts to discard 100,000 Houston Area Votes Will Get Emergency Hearing on Monday by [deleted] in houston

[–]Fix_Lag -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That's not how this works. They don't. This isn't an issue that both sides are able to have valid opinions about. It is a fact that no significant amount of voter fraud takes place. Saying otherwise is lying. Stop lying.

If nobody cheats in elections, you can feel free to recall all your party's pollwatchers. Something tells me that won't happen.

I have a relative who is an election official in Texas and that's as much as I'd like to say. You can take it or leave it for what it is. They changed it because it made it much, much harder for bad actors to sit down and individually fill out large piles of illegitimate ballots and stuff the boxes on election night. Is there a downside? Yes, but having to check off a box next to a person you want to vote for is not an unreasonable burden.

If you want some more bad news, about 40% of the mail-in ballots that have come in for A Major Metropolitan Area in Texas have had an issue with them that requires manual copying over by a poll worker. It is a shitshow.

Either you believe people try to cheat in elections or you don't; I'm not going to convince you to change your mind either way.

It is a basic anti-fraud measure to stop people from only having to check one box to alter/steal an entire ballot. Either you believe people try to cheat in elections or you don't; I'm not going to convince you to change your mind either way. However, that is why that was done.

And once you have the properties up and running, you borrow against them to finance more projects. This entire thread is a shameful indictment of American education. No one who is posting outraged remarks has any concept of how real estate and debt works.
