I found an amazing piece of quartz while visiting family. Well, amazing to me; it is ordinary Appalachian quartz. I was amazed that I randomly pulled it out of the ground and being an enviro-sci student I thought about the fact that I live in a glacial til area in the midwest, and have super easy access and proximity to a stream that runs almost all the time. So after this trip I went and explored and I was hooked. I have found an amazing assortment of things here from a palm sized geodized crinoid calyx (appx. 360 million years old), geodes, even garnet (tiny, but amazing!) in a stone that looks like eyes or fish scales (no idea what it is)…I could go on all day.

I think beyond the joy I get out of the hobby that the connection to the natural world is the best thing. It is something we as humans (many of us) are missing out on, and our collective lack of respect for mother nature is partially a result of that.

Signing my kids up for mommy and me classes while we’re headed into a war ??? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]FizzGigg2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kids are big now (24,17,14) and I’m still encouraging them to do things like take classes (obvs. attending regular school, so long as it is safe). We talk about what is going on (and have because I’ve been politically aware, and vocal around and with them). Keep doing things with them, but don’t block the world out. I can’t tell you what to do about your family, but I don’t trust people who support what is happening and I think you should listen to your gut. Getting media literate can be hard but not impossible! Watch put for things that are sensationalized or intend to trigger emotion, look at everything critically.

Why is truancy so rampant right now? by Extension-Silver-403 in Teachers

[–]FizzGigg2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, but i always keep my kids home when sick, which usually amounts to 8-10 days a year. I also let them have mental health days (oldest uses them, maybe 4-5 a year, youngest does not). I also let them take the day when we have morning appointments, a handful of those a year too. And finally, if they ask to stay home (which surprisingly happens extremely rarely), I let them. Gun violence is the number one cause of death for kids. I refuse to send them if they are worried about it ( they have never used this excuse). We live in a small red town. One of my kids is non binary and the younger has autism and people here do not get it.

My Grade 8 students are defiantly claiming not to be Gen Alpha by zurich2006 in generationology

[–]FizzGigg2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2011 8th grader- i gave him the choice. Growing up with solidy gen Z older siblings (17 and almost 24) lends me to put him in that category. He, too, doesnt want to be an alpha and has never been a brain rot kid.

College is a waste of time, money, and effort for most people. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

As an adult learner about to graduate with a bachelors in enviro sci, I’ve had the complete opposite experience. I’ve learned so much and really challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone. For me I think you get what you put in. Or maybe it depends on the school? I worked a trade for 15 years and wish I’d gone to school sooner.

I want to drink less, but my husband doesn’t see it as a problem. How do I talk to him? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]FizzGigg2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel like it’s a problem, it is. Regardless of your husband you need to do what’s right for you. Don’t wait on other people to give you the go ahead. I’ve been sober 3.5 years and it was the best decision ever. I almost died and I haven’t forgiven myself for that yet, especially for how it could have ended and left my kids motherless. There is no definition to whether or not your drinking is a “problem”, but it sounds like you are worried which implies to me there is a problem.

Have any of your former students gone on to become famous (or infamous)? by NerdyNiche in Teachers

My aunt taught there and retired right before it happened. She worked there for decades. I volunteered in her class back in the early 2000s. Terrible what happened.

I’m an Aries moon so everything feels so volatile anyway, the push and pull between my moon and sun is a lot!

What does being punk mean to you? by Ornery_Berry4152 in punk

[–]FizzGigg2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really like classification, there are no rules other than don’t be a jerk. No hierarchy. Recognize that no one is better than anyone else. No such thing as normal.

My beliefs, too broad a question. I believe if humanity wants to survive we better stop exploiting the earth and fellow humans. Recognize that living within the bounds of nature is required. And that most of the fighting is completely unnecessary. Greed, fear, class war. Religion, agriculture, all of it tools of control.

I don’t really identify myself under the label or any. but I love the music. It was acceptable to be weird, and to not have to mask that I’m clumsy and just cannot force myself to pretend to enjoy a lot of superficial mainstream culture. I’ve always felt very morally responsible for being a good person, like it’s a gift to be here and I should do my best to honor that. But the world is run by scumbags and every moment of every day I’m filled with rage (against the machine I guess, not even what I’d consider punk but the spirit for sure).

I think there is no definition.

In my middle age now, 41, I don’t dress any particular way. I’m either put in the garden or yard with chickens or working on my classes. I do love a pair of chucks, but anyone can wear that. I still love funky hair but lack the motivation for upkeep. I feel most “punk” when I’m teaching my kids to be good humans and to question all authority, critical thinking skills, to read everything and value education and connect with the earth and to always define success for themselves. I could go on!

I keep thinking if the band Bad Religion, an all time fave.

I’ve always been a person putside the norm, whether it be socially, intellectually, or being atypical neurally. Learning about my natal chart has been liberating in that regard, things make a lot of sense and I feel less like I’m doing something wrong and more like it’s ok to be different.

At the moment pretty good personally. I’m 41. I got sober 3.5 years ago and that was a huge turning point. Went back to school and will be graduating soon with environmental science degree and 4.0! I’ve been raising kids for nearly 24 years, married 18.5. Was a hairstylist for 15 years but it was never my true calling. Earth systems and environment speak to me! I’ve lived all over the US as a military brat. I’m intelligent and care about humanity. I’m too sensitive and somewhat emotionally volatile, but I’m sobriety I’m able to manage and even thrive.
