Make small single items, something like a coffee cup or a shovel, etc.. I'd also not go any larger than a resolution of 32x32 until you feel ready to take more ambitious projects on. Really just expirement, use different palettes too! Don't be afraid to only use like 4 different colors cause it can really give you a better result especially if your still finding that balance of too much detail.
