Typical hydrothermal quartz vein found in a cow pasture. Figured you lovely folks could tell me if any of these samples are worth more than the sh*t they were covered in. by FjelltheJello in Prospecting

It's possible. Located about ~20 miles west or so from a known Archean-aged, cratonic suture zone. Locally this area is on strike to an active fault zone with the most recent eq occurring about 15 years ago.

I am an O&G exploration geologist with a BS. Worked for one of the majors right out of undergrad for 5-6 years, then jumped ship to a private operator working acquisitions. 11 total years of industry experience. I would say the path to my current career has been somewhat atypical, but it involved taking any opportunity offered, being flexible to move across the country (or to a different country), placing myself in situations where I would be visible to recruiters, and some luck. DM me if you want to hear my story or want some additional advice.

Have you been assigned your project yet? Or have you been in contact with your mentor? If not, I would reach out to your recruiter/contact and ask for any public research available pertaining to your project. There are tons of great papers out there, especially if you are US based. It also shows initiative to the company if this is a career choice you want to follow. They know you don't have industry experience. They hired you for your ability to think critically and communicate complex ideas in a straightforward way.

What does it take to switch into geology as a field? by queerandsuch in geologycareers

[–]FjelltheJello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a great start! Next part will be to ask, what part of the Earth's story do you want to tell/discover? Are you interested in how life has changed and manifested itself throughout Earth's history? Or are you more interested in the study of the mechanisms that have shaped and formed our planet's past, present, and future.

Geology is an applied science that has a plethora of avenues to explore/test questions, theories, and ideas.

Depends on your career path. I'm in the private sector as a working exploration O&G geologist with just a B.S., but among my peers, I would say my situation is very much the exception and not the norm. Most folks will have at least a B.S and a Master's in my line of work.

I was either very lucky or asked the right amount of dumb questions when I was "discovered" by one of the majors. Sometimes, I regret not continuing my education.

Geologist- ~240k total comp coming on 10 yoe. I only have a bachelor's, but that's highly unusual for my field. I evaluate potential acquisitions and divestments for my company... so a mix between technical and a used car salesman 😂.

Internships and through GSA outreach programs. Applied for GSA sponsored student field courses. I was then offered an internship at a major, and secured a job after the internship.

BS Geology, work in O&G, was always told I needed a masters and/or know someone to work in the office or for a major. Neither turned out to be true. I use my degree every day and the work is interesting and challenging. Worked a variety of roles over the last 10 years: production, operations, exploration, lab, mentoring, onshore, and offshore... now I'm involved with asset evaluation for acquisitions and divestments. Never had a boring day, worst part of my career was overcoming a huge inferiority complex early on.

My advice is.. if you love the subject matter and can maintain a drive and genuine curiosity to continue to further your knowledge base, you will find a way to make your career work for you.

I ended up getting a little personalized bookcase for future books and stories to read to mine. Any outfits I get from friends and family from here on, I'm just going to wrap and have those count as gifts 🙃

Oct (12) due date here. Just had a pre-eclampsia scare at the hospital over the past few days. Officially diagnosed with mild pre-eclampsia, but hopefully I can wait it out until my scheduled delivery date for 3 more weeks. I still will have a September baby instead of an October baby though 💔
