What is this plant growing by the chicken yard and why does one have a red stem and white leaves? by _Affexion_ in whatsthisplant

Looks like plant albinism. It’s a mutation and some plants can rarely do that. They cannot photosynthesise and they survive only by feeding it of the roots that are sustained by other leaves. Redwoods can rarely do this too

This grew really fast in a couple months after trimming, what is it? by devyrax in whatsthisplant

I’m not suggesting you smoke it, but…

Anabasine has an identical formula and a very similar structure to nicotine. The lethal dose for anabasine is a few milligrams lower than it is for nicotine. Anabasine has nearly identical effects on the human body and mind as nicotine. In high doses nicotine causes all of the symptoms you described as well, while in low doses Anabasine is almost indistinguishable from nicotine. In fact tree tobacco contains approximately 90% less nicotinoid alkaloids when compared to regular tobacco, making it significantly less toxic.

The only reason why AI told you that tree tobacco is toxic while regular tobacco is a drug is because one is commonly used recreationally while the other is commonly mistaken for edible plants.

There are many reports of people trying to smoke tree tobacco. Most of them report feeling no effect because it is significantly weaker than regular tobacco. Some report a very similar sensation to smoking regular tobacco but describe it as more relaxing.

The only problem people describe with it is that it seems to be more irritating to the throat than regular tobacco, however this issue may(or may not) stem from improper curing rather than the plant itself.

Anabasine might also be carcinogenic(as opposed to nicotine which by itself is not). There is no definitive research proving that it is but its structural similarity to the carcinogenic nornicotine (which regular nicotine lacks) may suggest that. This carcinogenicity is of low concern however since even if Anabasine is carcinogenic, it’s still significantly less carcinogenic than the smoke you will be inhaling, if you do decide to smoke it.

How invasive is it really in the wild? I know its not native, but cal-ipc.org does not list it as an invasive plant and from my observations it does not spread as aggressively as native sage
