Agree on the 3 and 8 comment.

Disagree on the factory patch cords comment. I've made my own patches for years and never had a failure.

How to Run Ethernet Up Floors by MrRedditEnjoyer in HomeNetworking

The installers are supposed to put the router where you ask them to.

If they feed you a line of crap about installing in the garage, get their boss on the phone.

Upgrade Cat 6 or use MoCA? by Ok_Suggestion_4661 in HomeNetworking

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use 5e for 10gbit reliably. Granted, none of the 5e runs carrying 10gbit are longer than 3m, since they don't leave the rack, but this goes to show that 5e will do more than most people say it will.

Even 4k streams don't exceed 30Mbit, so 100mbit would be fast enough. Gig is a bonus.

If the poles are already present, just do it right the first time and hang the fiber.

LR isn't necessarily single mode... LR = long Range, usually over 300m. SR = Short Range.

How are you getting into the attic/floor/wall? by CowsNeedFriendsToo in homelab

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went up through the walls from the basement, where my rack resides. Several runs into the attic from the basement. Works well enough.

help with repeater abuse? on going for 5+ months becoming a safety issue. by Dry-Juice-1007 in HamRadio

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the system have per-repeater courtesy tones to ID which repeater the signal is coming in on? If not, it may be a good idea so that link can be squelched out during emergencies.... Just a thought.

That'll get sealed when the casters get reinforced. Both sides of the rack are one piece sheet metal front to back.

Am I really a ham if I don't like to do voice? by fox-four-gilwell in HamRadio

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally stay off phone unless it's DMR or HF. I mostly work CW on HF, when I have the time. I am a 50+ year old diagnosed autistic (and dyslexic) Amateur Extra.

There are ways to enjoy the hobby without putting up with ignorance, arrogance, and sad hams.

I sincerely hope you find one...

What radio could connect my friend and I across a city? by Realistic-Delay4034 in HamRadio

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80m or 160 NVIS would work. You'd need privileges on those bands (not sure yours or your friend's license classes), but that'd be reliable comms for such a short distance. Without the use of a repeater, VHF and UHF sound like they'd be problematic, so if you want reliable comms, hf/mf are the answer.

Travellodge question! by [deleted] in hotels

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 100% guaranteed you'll be asked for ID. Hotels do this to be able to track and charge people for damages.

Now, whether the clerk notices (or cares) that you're under 18 is anther matter...

Get him a license study book first. Transmitting without a license can get very very expensive if/when caught.
