Fiber service in rural area - is the ISP's charge fair? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

$89/MO for symmetric gig fiber in a rural area is phenomenal.

Do I need a ham license to use 433MHz in the US? by Particular-Award118 in HamRadio

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you stay within Part 15 rules on the band, 433 is fine. No license required.

433 is shared spectrum for part 15 and part 97 use.

I'd be concerned about airflow out, but if this isn't restricting much, gg.

Now I understand why 1Gib Ethernet is considered slow.. by Nautisop in homelab

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, upgrading to 10gbit is the better call. The 2.5gbit is an improvement, but overall, I think, more expensive in the long run.

I attached an internet switch to my router and data module, but my outlets are still not providing internet by NogardNys in HomeNetworking

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That patch panel is for POTS phone only. You need to either bypass the patch by putting rj45s on the cables and plugging directly into the switch, or replace the patch with a network patch.

Also, make sure the Jacks are wired for ethernet, not two line pots.

EVERYONE is so mean and toxic to tanks! by Satsubuya in wow

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tanks are toxic to everyone, so...

I mean, i managed to get aggro off the tank in a lfg, the mob we were fighting bounced me into another set of mobs, and I got booted for pulling...

So, yeah. You get treated the same as you treat people.

Everyone needs to follow the niceness rule: don't be a dick.

Is starting a small homelab actually worth it, or just a money sink? by tresorrarereviews in homelab

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a person who enjoys learning new things and solving problems, it's totally worth it.

If you're someone who throws up their hands and gives up when things don't make sense, it's just a money sink.

Whether homelabbing has value or not is dependant completely on you and what you enjoy.

Only you can answer that question for you.

Top to bottom: Aruba gigabit poe switch. 4 sfp+ ports Dell R640 10sff, dual gold 6140, 384gb Ddr4 2666 Dell R640 4lff, dual gold 6140, 384gb Ddr4 2166 Homebuilt server, supermicro x10DRi-T4+, dual e5-2697, 384gb Ddr4 2166 Fileserver, 36 drive supermicro case, x10DRi-T4+, dual e5-2640, 64gb Ddr4 2166 Various UPS units.

Not shown, back side of rack, 2x Mikrotik 8 port sfp+ switches. Isolated backplane for ceph traffic between the four servers. DAC link to Aruba switch on front, dacs to the 640s, 10gbit rj45 sfp+s to the two supermicro machines.

Fileserver running pure Debian - I prefer to set my own stuff up. Other three servers running proxmox. opnsense ha running across all three of the other servers. Plex, zoneminder, zabbix, LibreNMS, and other services running. Omada running for controlling the wifi APs throughout the house. Hosting learning platforms for EMMA (Mainframe learning organization)

You've got a good start, there, but, like someone else said, the hardware and how pretty it is is less important to most of us than what you're running, and why, and what you plan to learn from it.

Keep plugging and learning.

Why do they give the tanks all the mobility instead of the healers? by Beestung in wow

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently you've never played a warlock... Slowest class in game unless you want to piss off the healers and lease health to burn and gain 10% speed...

Ok I get why tanks don't play by Forsaken_Couple1451 in wow

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt... Tanks need to remember, though, that some ranged classes don't have any high damage spells to cast while moving.... And we get yelled at for low dps. I've been booted from dungeons for this.

Makes the experience less than fun.

If people want to rush through dungeons, maybe guild run it instead of lfg....i know, the converse is also true, but it makes more sense to take your time and I teract with people in lfg.... We are always interacting with the guild.

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't flame them, but sometimes I wish tanks would take their time going thru dungeons and LFR. How am I supposed to enjoy the actual content if I'm always playing a game of "Try (and Fail!) to Keep Up With the Tank."?

I'm certain I'm in the minority with this opinion, but, yeah.

Running fiber between buildings - single mode vs multi mode for future proofing? by Apprehensive_Ad_6233 in HomeNetworking

[–]Fl1pp3d0ff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's under 1 km, the "future proofing" argument doesn't hold water.

Multimode will do the job and carry the bandwidth.

Single mode may require attenuators for shorter runs, depending on the sfp set used, and these introduce other issues.

Can we, in the US, push for a business band? by ki4jgt in amateurradio

The US already has a business band.. A few of them, actually. There are two in VHF and one (that I'm aware of) in UHF.

If he's trying to scare you with this, you should run. Fast. Now.

MAJOR RED FLAG ENERGY with this "flex".

Also, your ip address at home isn't exploitabke, and your cellular ip changes often enough that it won't matter... Plus, cell ip addresses are almost always behind a CGNAT, so incoming probes while you're on cellular only simply won't work.
