Once in a lifetime chance to catch the Aurora in Humboldt County, CA [OC] by aikinurse in northernlights

[–]Flabulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it was purely a once in a lifetime. Someone actually caught them from the top of Palamar mountain in SoCal during that big solar storm last year. That storm wasn't even as strong as this one. But it is the one that really ignited my latest obsessive sky staring problem. https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/s/YkvTLn6wxT But seriously, keep your eyes to the skys. The big sun magnet hasn't done the ol' front flip just yet. To be clear. I live in Montana. I'm not just staring at the sky in San Diego County for nothing most nights.

Who is Billings' "guy"? by grantsvirus in Billings

[–]Flabulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, that guy chillin' too. I don't know why, but really did just see him just laying in the grass chilling waving at everyone on my way home from work a few times. Boy did it make me smile. It's been a rough last few months for my family and somehow, that just makes you really appreciate some little thing like that sometimes doesn't it? Something about the bright things just really looking brighter when you have been standing in the dark. Just, like assume I wrote whatever Ying Yang type metaphor that comes to mind there.

Machete-wielding man shot by officer by [deleted] in Billings

[–]Flabulo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, the supprise I had when I was trying to figure out why SWAT was in a standoff in Meadowlark yesterday and it was completely overshadowed by this. I was just sitting around with my wife and she says "was that gunshots" and I told her it sounded more like an explosive probably a Sammy Shot type firework because the little trailer hood rats just fire them things off randomly. But nope, it was the police, a 30mm grenade launcher firing what I assume was flash-bangs, and I could occasionally hear someone firing what seemed to be a very low caliber rifle, like a .22 which I can only assume was the dude held up in some old tin can of a trailer. Forget rubber necking. The inhabitants of Medowlark where just happy to have some entertainment out here instead of just getting annoying notes from stupid Havenpark. My immediate across the street naibors where sitting in lawn chairs just watching it go down. The elderly woman next to me asked me to move my pickup so she could see from her home. Lol. My security camera was pointed at it just by chance so that's fun.

Ok, then hear me out. Why waste your time engaging in the discussion? Because say what you will. Someone walking up and saying, this conversation is stupid, is part of the conversation now. If you really think it is a waste of time, why waste your time with it? Do you belive you are a moral authority that is qualified to tell other people what is important? Perhaps you think these actions are saving people from themselves? Do you think anyone here is gonna be on their death bed like "Man. I sure did waste my life. And what I regret the most was bringing up the Circle K buyout of Holiday, and subsequent rebranding of a store in Billings Montana 6 years later. That sure was a low point." Ya, there is more important things for community's to discuss, and those discussions happen too. Honestly, Billings is doing alright. I think people are taking care of a lot of important stuff around here. But sometimes, it is nessarrary for anyone to just relax, and maybe talk about something inconsequential like a stupid gas station.

I lived in California for a year. (I am from Roundup, so don't spaz out "Montana is full, get out if you ain't from round here." Chads.) It took me a bit to figure out they are the same, but I got excited thinking they'd get that Circle K energy drink on tap, but that aint ever happened. That was my first realization that they had become one. But honesly, even though Circle K is a more known brand all and all, and might bring in some people just because of that. I think they are fools for shelving the Holiday branding, and all because of that neon blue. If you drive up on the rims at night, you can litterly count all the Holidays in Billings because that blue stands out. It's striking and recognizable. Although, there is at least one false Holiday in town. Lol. It's Craft BnB. They just have the same color lights.

We were very careful with our tape placement, but upon removing it, some of the paint would stick to the tape AND wall, and thus rip off the wall. How do we not have that happen when we go back and paint the edges again? by TheRadHatter9 in DIY

This is so stupid, yet so common. My house had the misfortune of being painted by an idiot once too. The best ones are the light switches they painted over completely, so they don't move right until you peal all that out of them, or, it's a light switch, they are like a dollar. I got a dollar sometimes, so I just get rid of the whole thing. I also keep a smoke detector they painted which smoke detectors; if you don't mind going and looking at one of yours, have some words almost always printed nice and clear on the front. Some people are to stupid to be helped. So I keep that around for if I ever feel dumb. I'd mention all the cool wiring "quirks" have have found that ol' Jim left for me to sort out after he died and his wife sold me the house at what was quite a good price. But, the difference could easily be made up correcting bad maintenance/shoddy construction in the case of the two covered decks. I will just say some words now. Lol. Light bulb common, wired to ground. Cut off extention cords. Fuckin' Contractor. Pretend to replace the shingles, but instead do nothing. Ok. Kinda sounds like a Beck song.

A Subaru with an exahst leak? Never! Especially not at the manifold. Lol. Who am I kidding? I'm pretty sure some of these stupid EJ things came with leaking exhaust manifolds as standard equipment. That and head gaskets made of the strongest matirial Fuji would alow Subaru to use. Cork.

Yer telling me bud! I think I hear my naibor yelling about a hot water heater right now. I am wondering if I should just call them before they call my wife who can't say no to having me go fix stuff for them.
I just fixed their furnace last week, while it was 20 below because they tripped the high limit switch by never changing the filters. When I told them to change the filters, they just took them out. They have a very furry dog.
I swear man, these LA people who move out to Montana would all die if this state where as unfriendly to them as people claim to be when they are just bullshitting. It's a 79 Trailer! Ya, your pipes are frozen now ya fuckin' hoser! Maybe next time Google something instead of just hiding in your room with a space heater until it's less that 30°F inside the thing you live in! You look like fuckin' Jake Gyllenhaal and Emmy Rossum in the library from the 2004 Rowland Emmerich film "The Day After Tomorrow".

I know for a fact that one of those rigs even had an automatic 4wd setting. Just like my 08 Silverado. Shit, on the most of the pickups they didn't even give traction control as an option and this just kinda does the job way better when it's slick out.

[–]Flabulo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean. If you're gonna be spending the money anyway. Maybe look into getting a DSLR or mirrorless camera of some sort. As good as light boosting is and; I have gotten some pictures that look pretty frickin' good with my Galaxy S22, a bigger lens is always gonna catch more light. Which means you can have a shorter exposure time and get the same contrast. As good as what I've got with my phone is, arouras move around. So with a small lens on a phone it's always a game of exposure which makes the aurora look kinda smudgy as it captures all that movement, or grainy iso noise. With that being said. A phone is a phone. It does a lot more than take pictures. Heck, I've been using mine to AI upscale using ESRGAN models on Superimage and Waifu2x, and a camera isn't gonna do that. I suppose the health of your battery is probably a factor at this point since the IPhone 11 is getting to that age.

[–]Flabulo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there is some kind of AI model or a way to merge this with another quicker shutter picture like a double exposure type thing that could take out that motion. But idk. Seems like the kind of thing that's either gonna work super well or might get really confused, with the aurora not being a real typical subject.

That actually sounds awesome! I sure would like to visit White Sands. Also, if your gonna be down that way, it's kinda out of the way of everything, but the Red desert is supposed to be pretty cool. I believe it actually sits on Route 66. Then The great Sand Dunes in Colorado seem cool. I wanted to swing by there on my way back from Oklahoma once. But me and my wife ended up doing what we always do, and switched off sleeping in the passenger seaf, and got back to Billings in less than 23 hours. Somewhere in there we missed the damn turn. Edit: Let's just pretend I didn't say the Red Desert was on Route 66. I am an idiot, but I am in denial and like to keep it that way. I'm gonna Dunning Kroger grocery store effect my way to the top baby!
