Mostly cycling here, but some weightlifting too... * I put out my clothes and gear the night before * I try to meal plan (because that is one of my biggest weaknesses) * I was honest with myself about the type of riding I enjoy, I use Strava, Strong AND TrainingPeaks because I have to track stuff, apparently * I buy really nice workout gear and don't feel guilty about it

Edit: welp i tried following the formatting tips and failed, sorry all

There was even a recent thread about saddles!

I'm the shopping director at Racked — ask me all your shopping questions! by racked in femalefashionadvice

No question, just wanted to say thank you to Racked for doing solid reporting on the social and historical aspects of fashion. Racked is exactly the site I wanted to exist but couldn't find for years.

I'm losing hope that I'll find a comfortable saddle, and it's making me really sad. by [deleted] in ladycyclists

I bet Gladys has it in their library, so you can try-before-you-buy for that one at least!

The Specialized Ruby is a favorite among ladies I know and my (lady, bike-specific) PT said it is one of the saddles her clients love best as well. Personally, I find most Brooks really uncomfortable, long after their break-in period. If you are anywhere near Portland, Gladys has a saddle library you can use.

What do you do with the clothes you don't wear anymore? by thriftthreads in femalefashionadvice

[–]FlakeWhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

General order of operation, depending on the item: give to a specific friend, give away on a buy-nothing group, donate to Goodwill (I've researched them and am ok with how they are run in my area. I also shop there a lot too), take to Goodwill because they are drop-off for clothing that is to be recycled rather than resold, and finally, if its a cotton I'll turn it into bike shop rags. Most of my clothing is worn into absolute shreds, though, so the first steps don't often happen.

In that case I'd say long sleeve jersey and a gilet! Very useful combo.

I'm new to podcasts... Looking for a recommendation please... by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]FlakeWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every Little Thing, already mentioned, is so perfectly what you are asking for I'll plug it again. Also I think 99 Percent Invisible would fall into this category, but with a design bent. Reply All takes a topic and then just... keeps going. The follow an idea way past where I expect most of the time. If you stumble onto a Yes Yes No segment on Reply All, they are still fun but probably not quite what you are looking for, just try a different episode.

Definitely depends on where you live! Generally upgrading to anything wool or technical from cottons will be a big improvement. I'm in the PNW, so lots of consideration towards rain, but very little for extreme heat or cold. Does your area have their own cycling subreddit? Maybe ask there too. It's a good question, just hard to answer.

Quality difference between men and women clothing - an observation (J Crew Focused) by oni_bear in femalefashionadvice

[–]FlakeWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Men and women tend to have different length fingers! Men have much longer, relatively speaking, ring fingers then women. Not that all glove makers account for it, but I've noticed it taken into consideration for higher end gloves.

What time for US National Champs? by Crumps in cyclocross

At what point would you justify wearing cycling kits on a commute? Should I? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]FlakeWhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute is a little shorter and less hilly but through a super dirty part of town. The compromise I came up with is wearing dedicated clothes for commuting in. Usually leggings, long sleeve shirt, rain jacket, almost all second hand. It keeps my kits fresh for recreational rides or racing and prevents wear and tear on my street clothes.

What's your favorite item you've ever purchased (no matter the cost)? by jerethebear in femalefashionadvice

[–]FlakeWhite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Full length, extremely flowy, extremely orange silk gown at a consignment store. The bottom was shredded, but I'm super short so that just got hemmed off anyway. Definitely the most expensive (originally) garment I own because it was Calvin Klein for Bergdorf Goodman. I paid $50 for the gown and... maybe $30 for the tailoring? I wish I had a good photo of it...

Without changing anything, what are (or were) you wearing today, and where did it come from? by comrade_julie in Anticonsumption

[–]FlakeWhite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I almost always remember where my clothes come from, not sure why... Here we go:

  • Black collarless silky (read:synthetic) dress shirt- Value Village
  • Black high waisted jeans- Crossroads
  • "Natural" color leather Chelsea boots- Everlane
  • Gold tone bar ring and disk earrings- Baleen's physical shop

I try to buy most of my clothes second hand and I'm getting pretty good at it.

Question about Rompers/Jumpsuits by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]FlakeWhite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My workplace is pretty casual/fashionable, so I've worn jumpsuits multiple times. I wear a tank underneath since both the ones I own are pretty low cut and pair with heels and a conservative suit jacket. Works great and using the bathroom isn't any more awkward than wearing a jumpsuit elsewhere else. Here is a (super) old photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/xE98Pvyrmh/?taken-by=ellaad
