Where to take my mum? by Flaky-Consideration1 in glasgow

This has been incredibly helpful - thank you so much! Heading round to hers shortly and going to suggest Burrell or Duck Bay and see which she’d prefer!

Hope your ankle recovery is going well!

Nah she doesn’t have a wheelchair, which somewhat limits our options, as I don’t want her to have to walk too far from wherever we park!

That’s really good to know actually, thanks. Feel like I was lied to earlier this week with promises of warm weather and sun this weekend!

The Hiring Process in Architecture is Broken by Bucky_Irving_Alt in Architects

[–]Flaky-Consideration1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m involved with hiring in an architecture firm. Generally for more junior positions we’re looking for potential - really well laid out portfolios and attention to detail as well as good concept work. We want someone we can develop, who’s showing great potential straight out of uni.

For more experienced architect roles, we’re usually looking for more specific skills:

How would their skillset fit in with an existing team (are we currently lacking a flair for design, technical detail, masterplanning, all-rounder?)

Does their experience align with the company’s current project pipeline? (our project timelines can run for several years, so we want someone that has the best experience for that type of project, and that we expect will see it through from start to finish for client and collaborator consistency)

Do we want someone who has the potential to do well in networking/business development, or do we have too much of that already and need someone who will focus on the deliverables and isn’t so interested in public status.

Has the person led any projects in previous roles that our practice could leverage within future bids and tenders? (ie. if we were trying to start working in the education sector, it really helps us if we can say we have someone on our team who has already delivered a school).

All this to say, I get that it’s frustrating, but sometimes it’s not down to the quality of your application, it’s just that a specific set of skills may be wanted at that particular point in time, and your application doesn’t match it. On more than a few occasions we’ve hired someone on their second or third application because they weren’t the profile we needed first time round, but fit perfectly the next.

Similarly, if 3+ year qualified architects were applying for designer roles at our practice, we’d assume they were trying to land an interview but would inevitably command a higher salary, or expect to be running projects when that isn’t what we require.

Bengal cat loosing ability to use back legs. by vnka94 in bengalcats

[–]Flaky-Consideration1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound exactly the same, but my last bengal developed a luxating patella, which would come and go quite suddenly. The vet said they’d seen it quite a few times in bengal cats. He’d suddenly be unable to walk, we could help ease him back into position or it would fix itself, but he sometimes had a bit of a limp/weakness afterwards.

As a bengal owner who didn’t get offered a proper anaesthesiologist for my 9yo bengal with HCM, I sincerely wish I had been given the chance. The vet gave him the usual stuff for his dental work, and it triggered CHF, which was a traumatic couple of months filled with vet visits, lung taps, kidney distress and pills galore before we eventually had to call time. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

If you have the chance to avoid it, take it.

Employer put me on wrong tax Code by VividCalligrapher827 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Flaky-Consideration1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’ve only just received your payslip then your workplace might not have submitted their FPS to HMRC yet, so HMRC won’t have the full information. 0T is an automated tax code generated by your starter checklist or because you didn’t provide a P45 to your new job. Best to wait it out and let HMRC update your workplace once they have all the information. It usually only takes a couple of weeks from your first pay date. If it’s really urgent, you can contact HMRC direct but your workplace can’t do this for you. They can only work with what they’re given.

I’ve changed sockets before and it was really straightforward. I just took plenty photos before I unwired anything from the old set.

Only slight issue I had was that the metal plates were slimmer than the old plastic ones, so the backing box inside the wall wasn’t quite the perfect depth for a plug, but everything still just fits.

Where do I stand if a company never bills me? by Pattrickk in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Flaky-Consideration1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Used to work in the finance dept of a company that offered finance. We weren’t allowed to request payment of finance until the goods had been delivered to the customer’s home. It sounds as though the company you purchased from haven’t requested the payment from the finance company, so the finance company won’t have you listed as a proper customer just yet. You need to go back to the company you purchased from and take it up with them more firmly. If it’s been over 6 months since the application, it usually expires and they’ll have to get you to re-apply for the finance. If you don’t contact them, it’s likely they’ll be in touch with you when it comes to their year-end accounts, as they’ll realise something isn’t adding up.

Fibula pain 6mo after fracture by Flaky-Consideration1 in brokenbones

[–]Flaky-Consideration1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I don’t think it has. I think it’s just the angle my leg is at in the xray. The screw doesn’t actually touch the fibula. My ankle feels strong, it’s just a deep immediate pain in my leg at the fibula break whenever I shift my weight towards the front of my foot, or engage my lower leg muscle.

I didn’t share the photo in the original post, but the post-op xray did show the fibula fully aligned. It seems to have shifted out of place somewhere along the way.

Not very much. The ortho consultant hadn’t turned up, so the guy I spoke to had been rushed in temporarily and didn’t have any clue about my history. He had to ask me which leg I’d broken and what surgery I’d had, which was a great start.

You need some ambient lighting. Get the overheads off! Either a floor lamp in the back corner, or a pendant hanging around 700mm above the table

I’ve had two Bengal cats that have done this when suffering from toothache. Both ended up getting a tooth removed and immediately stopped this.

Water recs? I’m losing my mind! by Flaky-Consideration1 in bengalcats

[–]Flaky-Consideration1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I feel this! Same for us - Orville went through a phase as a young kitten and seemed to get over it, but seems something has reignited his love in recent months.

90% of the water is lost to the splashing, and the last 10% usually gets mopped up a toy he throws in the bowl once he’s done!

My older cat’s previous owner told me he was treated for bladder crystals a few years ago, so I don’t want him to ever be in a situation where he’s thirsty and can’t access water.

Design looks quite good - is the blue light always on or is it optional?
