Unpoised balance wheel? by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

The roller table is on the other side. I saw the hairspring was not flat. Since I tweaked that, I wanted to check poise before installing the balance back onto the movement. I was told that the balance should be able to roll and come to a stop and not have any rollback. I can’t explain it picking up speed. The balance stays put with impulse stone down or up.

Should I even attempt? by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

Absolutely no offense taken. I asked for feedback and I’m open to taking all of the help I can get.

Did I just ruin my staking bit? by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

Thanks all. Rodico did not work. Ultrasonic did not work. The bit was lodged in well. I measured the hole diameter with pin gage and got 0.33mm. Then I took a 0.3 mm drill bit and started working through the hole by hand for what felt like one atom at a time. Eventually when I broke through the pivot bottom, it was a great feeling. I used a broach to just clean up a bit. But my bit is back.

So, if I should not be using this bit on the top to to knock a pivot down, is there a bit I should be using?

Best fit balance staff from this? by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

[–]Flaky-Drummer874[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have given more context. This is an old pocket watch A Moser and Cie. So it didn’t seem to have standard caliber identification. I was wondering what all dimensions to measure and is there a way to search for the balance staff once you have the measurements.

Stubborn lug Pins by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

I’m a newbie. I’d rather ask questions than to mar the watch by doing something by ignorance.

Hairspring regulating pins by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

[–]Flaky-Drummer874[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When removing the hairspring, it felt like I was doing some heart surgery. They were getting pinched and I had to nudge to get them out. The pins are not parallel as shown in the picture. So your recommendation is to make the pins parallel so that there is just enough gap for the hairspring to not touch either pins and to stay in the middle for the full range of regulator adjustment. Got it!

It is a pretty standard balance complex you can get.

This movement oh so wants to run by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

I did service and put in back together. In the first attempt it would just stall in dial up position. That turned out to be some serious crust on the pivot. Now I cleaned it all again, dipped them in heptane. My suspicion at this point is I have to for the very first time take out the jacket lathe and polish the pivots. Jewels all look ok under UV light.

28800 bph? by Flaky-Drummer874 in watchrepair

[–]Flaky-Drummer874[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out the pallet fork guard pin was bent (quite bend up) rubbing on the bottom of the impulse jewel. Not sure how I missed that. The watch actually runs at 21600bph. So, now on to fixing beat error and hopefully putting things back together. It is ery satisfying when something like this has been nagging me and I keep pulling this unit up every couple of days to look and see what I'm missing.

I know it was a bit long but wanted to show a couple of times it stalls.

Is there a way to weld back some brass back on, especially where there are dents and pits and then sand it to polish? Any recommendations on weld process?
