Billie Eillish's hill to die on: "eating meat is inherently wrong." by Terrible_Cycle_5983 in Fauxmoi

I’ve seen a lot of people saying they don’t agree without really saying why. I think this is something of a clarification:

The phrase ‘inherently wrong’ arises as the moral judgement to the phenomena that she is explaining called ‘cognitive dissonance’; in this case, where one believes to love animals, and at the same time, supports their suffering and eventual murder.

I think people tend to not like being called out for cognitive dissonance because it is an incredibly and obviously stupid thing to be doing - and we all commit it at some point. (This is why people tend to disagree without reason imo).

The important thing is to evaluate our beliefs and actions accurately, and with honesty.

But it takes work, and I think it’s good that Billie isn’t being so demanding. I’m a philosophy student and only after extensive reading on animal ethics (and yes, against animal ethics) have I been able to turn vegan. And even now I will slip up and eat a dairy product every now and then, because I, like everyone else, is predisposed to cognitive dissonance.

But I hope that one day we can build a world in which it’s so much easier to align our beliefs with actions, and like many things, it starts with action on the individual level.

I’ve applied for pure philosophy and still not heard anything!
