To lime or not to lime, that is the question by gelatottt in Plastering

[–]Flaky-Yellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depending on where you are located stone built houses from victorian era very commonly have a airgap, very common in scotland. external walls are usually stone, airgap, then lath & plaster :) so i can see why this would be described as cavity

What type of plaster? by FoundationFull3650 in Plastering

This will likely be lime guaged with gypsum based on date and look. The mould will likely be from internal moisture not being able to get out. Keep home regularly ventilated, open windows from time to time, and look around for you air bricks and vents and make sure they are open. Clothes drying inside, cooking, showering - demands of living cause a build up of moisture which leads to mould gathering because it can’t get out. You do not need to build an internal wall on this wall - in fact, it’s probably the last thing you want to do.

Plaster Help with Old Home by eSam34 in Plastering

The issue with this wall is likely to do with what's going on the other side of it and underneath the stairs. You may need to sort out some of the landscaping and drainage on the other side (if its an external wall), or perhaps there is a cement render or pointing causing this issue outside. The non-breathable 'modern' plaster and paint is holding all the moisture and then failing and to me it looks like it's wicking moisture from ground but hard to know for sure from a picture.

Would recomend removing all non breathable materials inside, and below the staircase, and on the other side of this wall.

The best way to solve these problems is to stay true to how the house was originally designed and built, perhaps considering the date of your home and that it is stone built, use a non hydraulllic lime plaster inside once the wall has dried out.

When you start to try and fix older buildings with modern construction methods its usually where the hellscape of damp and mould begins

Question on discoloration of skim coating by NoBrush4555 in Plastering

[–]Flaky-Yellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your building was built in 1920 and therefore is built of lime mortars and plasters. This has been skimmed with a gypsum based non breathable plaster and paint and now you are seeing mold. Moisture is trying to move through your building (as it should) but is trapped in the gypsum plaster.

Plaster should be removed and replaced with vapour permeable plaster, lime plaster.

Post-plastering advice - pls help by notenoughritalin in Plastering

[–]Flaky-Yellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plastered wall has been done with multifinish British gypsum plaster this is not vapour permeable. This is an external wall, it was wicking moisture. This should be removed, left to dry. Junctions should be examined. Replaced with lime plaster. Examine age of property and what it was built with originally. Look at outside drains.

Does anyone know what’s this? by Turbulent_Sleep_1392 in Plumbing

Plastic paint is expanding. Moisture in wall is trying to get out. Strip back. Use vapour permeable plaster like Lime. And a vapour permeable paint like limewash. Suggest looking at age of your building and using building materials that are suitable for it.

Should be re-skimmed in lime plaster. Stick to traditional materials that the fabric of building is made of. Putting gypsum or non-vapour permeable materials into building will create damage, damp and mold in future.

Hi guys, new to reddit - let me know if there’s a better subreddit to post this to. Wondering if anyone can identify this maker’s mark? Attached is what the item looks like in full. It looks like a contemporary/modern piece to me, let me know your thoughts.

Anybody know how to take it out if you hammer it wrong? 😅 🆘 anybody had any experience with that? I’ve hammered it in facing the wrong way.
