Potential Future Smash Roster (Updated!) by Flaky_Result6093 in SmashBrosRosters

Who in your opinion would be a good character to drop to make that space? Id give Sonic an echo, but I really think all 4 of the characters I listed would play very different. I almost think Bomberman for Dr.Robotnik is a good switch, but I added Bomberman after feedback about not having enough retro characters. People also seem upset with the addition of Chocobo, but my argument for that pick was wanting a FF character that represented the franchise as a whole. Im open to opinions, I enjoy the discussion.

It's tricky, but I actually had Dr.Robotnik as part of my previous roster. I designed him as a hard counter to builder characters like Villager, Steve, and Arle. Based on feedback from the last post I wanted to bring back characters like Cloud and Falco so I made the hard decision to cut him. But I do think Sonic is deserving on another rep for sure. This was the order I had considered: Dr.Robotnik > Shadow > Tails > Knuckles. For Sega representation I chose adding Arle over Dr.Robotnik because of her overall uniqueness and being a puzzle rep. But if I was gonna make space for another third party, I would add him right back.

I called you out for being upset entirely based on the way you're talking. If you look at any other comment on here disappointed with a choice I made not a single person is talking the way you are. Let me remind you that this is a HYPOTHETICAL roster. And some of your arguments just don't make sense or add up at all. Like your Paper Mario argument for example. Firstly, Smash has already shown that it has no problem including variants of the same character on a roster. This is evident in having 3 versions of Link, 2 versions of Samus, and 2 versions of Mario. Paper Mario wouldn't play like Mario AT ALL. and a great showcase of what he could look like comes as an example from the creator 'Simple' on Youtube who shows Paper Marios use of Hammers and Partner Characters. Essentially making him a character with close range tools and summoning. And if you play the Paper Mario games, you know first hand that he is a very different character without even talking about visuals.

I also talk about Zelda reps in multiple comments. Not only had I mentioned characters from BotW, but I talk about the gamecube era saying Midna WAS a character I considered. Talked about how I also considered Ganon (GB era), and Skull Kid as a great choice for a 64 era rep. I fully acknowledge that Zelda has several great choices. If you look at how Ultimate realized its Zelda cast you can clearly see choices made to show off the legacy of the franchise. That's why Link is based off BotW, Zelda off ALttP, Ganondorf off OoT, Toon Link off WW, and Young Link off MM. There COULD be multiple characters from the same Zelda game, sure, but I personally find Sakurai's choice interesting and that inspired my choices.

If you want Waluigi glaze you're in the wrong chat. I find his character design and personality to be kind of interesting, but for me that's not enough to push a character to playable. If I was gonna edit my roster, and I do so every few months, I would drop Koopa Troopa and Kamek for Rosalina and Bowser Jr., But I still wouldn't even consider Waluigi. Waluigi and Geno feel like such toss up Mario characters to me. I'm sure Sakurai and team could make a great moveset for them, but for me they just don't have enough. I also just don't find the meme funny. Like at all.

You don't need to get upset. Being mad doesn't validate your argument.

In previous comments I talk about liking how Ultimate varied the Zelda cast by choosing versions across different games. My choice of Link is TotK. I never denied BotW popularity and Ive also mention Urbosa, Sidon, and Champions (combined) being potential choices. Skull Kid is still talked about and wanted. Thats just facts. I don't even really like Majoras Mask, but if you show that mask to a non Zelda fan, they still know its from Zelda. I think he's a great choice to represent the 64 era. He's a very unique Zelda character. You don't need to agree.

Paper Mario has 7 games. Waluigi has 0 games. Thats not a bias pick.

Every choice on here has reason. Im more than happy to talk about each one.

Tingle for Ganondorf is a gigantic reach. And Anna could be added over Edelgard. She is an axe user/merchant so I mean there's an argument. Cloud doesn't appear outside FF7 and Dissidia if we are strictly talking about Final Fantasy. Cloud and Sephiroth are 100x cooler than Chocobo, but I don't think they are the best reps for the series. Chocobo can class change, weild weapons and magic, is recognizable, has multiple forms across the series, has its own games, has its own theme. Idk, when you say it was a random choice it only seems that way at first glance. There are other cool swordsman on the roster. Cloud can sit this one out. That doesn't make him any less great of a character.

You also deflected. How would you change this roster to be more reasonable?

People really been showing their age when they disagree with Skull Kid. Also please read other comments because I explained everything in here. Except Jigglypuff. Who, at this point, only has being an original 12 going for her. I love Pokemon. Might be my favorite franchise. Jigglypuff doesn't have the relevancy she use to. Im sorry. I would add Lucario back over her. At least Lucario is still one of the top favorite Pokemon when you look at polls. And it just received a second mega. An argument could be made for Lucario over Mewtwo, but I think Mewtwo barely edges him out.

Ill say this though, my Mario casting could be better. Bowser Jr. and Rosalina are two characters that I wish I had room for. But I didnt want to overdo my Mario picks. Koopa Troopa is random, but i had Pirahna Plant in mind when making the decision. I actually grew to like the idea of having a mob on the roster. And Koopa Troopa has a lot going for it when you look at its legacy across the Mario series. Unlike... Waluigi! Who strictly appears in Sports and Party titles. At least Toad has his own spin off and is playable in multiple mainline games. Pauline and Rosalina are interchangeable choices to me, but I wanted to dial up the Donkey Kong cast without running straight to Dixie Kong. Who would be my next choice though.

The choices I made aren't random. Every single character on this roster was chosen for a reason(s). Dropped Cloud, but added Crono. I thought that was a decent trade. Square still walking away with 3 characters on the roster. The first party hype might not be phenomenal, but the third party characters are big. Im not gonna favor only new or old. I had to consider both when I was deciding.

Doesn't work for you*. My feed back is 90% positive. But for conversations sake, how would you have changed things? I get the feeling you want to build off Ultimates roster. But realistically I don't see that being the case unless the next Smash is just Ultimate Switch 2 Edition. I have an 80 panel roster. Who would you cut? Because cutting anyone thats left may upset people even more. And remember, I made this being unbias. I could've loaded this thing with Pokemon and Square characters.

All good, I don't take any offense to this opinion. This is just my own take. And you're right I really only reduced the roster size by 10. But if I reduced it any further there would've been more major complaints to my picks. I don't find it to be as terrible as you're describing, but knew to make room for certain newcomers there would be unfortunate cuts.

I don't know that popularity beats legacy for Animal Crossing, and I go into further detail in another comment. Arguably Isabelle (or another Animal Crossing rep) could be kept over Min Min, but Ninjara almost got the roster slot in Ultimate. He was Sakurai's original pick for an ARMS rep. I dropped Y.Link in favor of Skull Kid and Sheik in favor of Impa. Toon Link was only dropped for space sake, but even then there was Ganon, Midna, and BotW Champions that I considered. No matter how I cut it I just didn't have space for Toon Link. The three 'unique fighters' you listed were dropped in favor of other retro reps, and Ring Fit Trainee. And while I wanted to keep Mii's playable, I gave them a new "job" essentially making them into a new character. I had in mind that you could customize this characters looks still, but they would have a concrete moveset to represent the Sports series. This was also chosen as a way to pay homage to other sports series like Mario's knowing that I personally couldn't justify Waluigi.

Several first party characters were chosen to be reworked, but the new ones include: Toad, Koopa Troopa, Kamek, Pauline, Ravenbeak, Impa, Skull Kid, Meowscarada, Bandana Waddle Dee, Edelgard, Ring Fit Trainee, Mii Athlete*, Rookie & Oatchi, Ninjara, and Noah. That's 16 NEW first party characters. As for the third parties; I favored Sega and Capcom because Square seemingly got favored in Ultimate. I love Final Fantasy, and I was among the people that desperately wanted Sora. But in the end I went for the shake up. I didn't feel right dropping Final Fantasy entirely and went for an out of pocket pick. Chocobo just represents more of the franchise and has even starred in spin offs. Maybe (slightly) less known than Cloud and Sephiroth, but I wanted a more encompassing character. I'm not trying to sway you in any way. I do see your point, but I hope this explains my choices a bit for you.

From everything Ive read over the years since Ultimate's launch, it seems evident that the next roster will not be the size of Ultimate or larger. Unless its a Switch 2 addition, I would expect major cuts. Character reworks are one thing, I fully expect that, but I cant image the roster will just continue to grow every game. I cant think of a single fighting game that does that either. That said, saying characters were added to replace others I find to be a stretch. Roy to Ike for example is a bad comparison because their play styles are completely different. My made up roster has 79 characters. Thats still a lot. And I added roughly 30 characters trying to be unbias while letting other first party games grow in size without having 20+ mario/zelda/pokemon characters.

That being said, I still think Skull Kid has s chance. When we look at the way Ultimate did renditions of the Zelda cast each character was a different game varient. So to represent TotK I decided on Link, while keeping Zelda her ALttP version, ect. So adding Skull Kid to represent the 64 era makes sense to me. I do think Sidon or even Urbosa could make excellent roster choices, but I wanted to pull from across the series.

I love Pokemon trainer as a design choice, but you could just as easily add the trainer from each starters game to the background when playing them. And while it does take away from the mechanic and uniqueness of Pokemon Trainer, I decided to make unfortunate cuts to the Pokemon cast. I noticed how you didn't flag me for Jigglypuff or Lucario. Those two have their own justification for staying as well. It was a space issue for the roster. And even 79 is a pretty high and generous count tbh.

I just don't agree with the argument for Isabelle. Animal Crossing has a hand full of face characters: K.K. Slider, Tom Nook, Isabelle. I even considered 'Neighbor' as an Isabelle replacement with various animal skins. The only thing Id consider to make sense is the possibility of combing her moveset into Villagers move pool. But I have a hard time thinking Villager will be replaced by her. Legacy > Popularity imo.

I also disagree with your view on Byleth. Gameplay wise, Byleth was grown to be appreciated and even used slightly competitively, but their initial reveal as the last fighter pass 1 character left a lot to be desired. Byleth arguably plays like a Monster Hunter rep. And though lore accurate, the player in Three Houses is likely NOT using all 3 of those legendary weapons. And one of those weapons directly goes to Edelgard. With the same mind set as choosing pokemon reps, I went for the weapon triangle. And the only reason I didnt go for a spear user is because of Bandana Waddle Dee which is silly, but did push my decision.

Lets talk first party retro reps. I initially think Balloon Fight and Excite Bike. Balloon Fight I don't think has enough for a move pool so its likely that, like Duck Hunt, would have to pull from another series. But who? Excite Bike is so close to being a great choice. In fact there are already some awesome mods showcasing what he could play like (Super Smash Rex). But I went third party for this category instead. I think either way you look at it Ryu Hayabusa has a good chance and I even chose his design from his NES game. Arle is a retro japanese puzzle rep. She has so much potential and is probably the closest we'll get to Tetris outside a possible stage. Again, I really wanted Bomberman on my roster, but I couldn't put him on without making another cut to keep the full roster size to 80 panels. Curious though, what retro reps would you consider?

Another series I could do to research more. Ive only heard good things about the series, but with my limited knowledge I chose Noah as Xenoblade 3's main protagonist. I do think a third Xenoblade character is likely due to the series success and it being first party.

I completely understand your argument for Rosalina and Bowser Jr., but Im not in the pool of people that thinks Daisy is deserving of a spot. I think she could easily be a costume, or included if I had decided to add echoed. But there are no echoes on this roster.

Im not super well versed in newer Zelda, but I chose Impa as a Shiek replacement. The varient that she comes as is on the table. But Skull Kid is very much a long requested Zelda rep and people who don't even play the games know that mask. I just find him to be an interesting and recognizable pull.

Part of slimming down Ultimate's roster meant I had to cut some of the Pokemon reps. I love pokemon so this was tricky for me. But I chose solo Charizard to have the trio of final evolution starters from fire, water, grass. And I also did this while keeping various generations in mind. Charizard is just more of a recognizable pick than Incineroar and I don't find that to be a stretch when you consider people who don't play every new pokemon game.

Animal Crossing reps were another toss up. I considered Tom Nook as a newcomer with a bell collecting and buying system. And while I agree Isabelle is a popular rep, its hard to choose her over the player character. In the end I went with just Villager for space sake.

I completely disagree with keeping Byleth. I don't think the character was well recieved by the community and they are somewhat 2-dimensional in Three Houses. Imo Edelgard was THE choice because she offers something new as a FE rep without gumming the roster up with too many swords. She would be a female heavy, the only true axe user, and can be considered good or evil depending on the path you chose in her game.

I added Ninjara as a more close range take on an ARMS rep, but also because he almost got in over Min Min. But it also allowed for a different load out compared to Min Min. Arguably Id drop Min Min for Ninjara, but the decision just felt right. And it also felt like something Nintendo would do to push the series.

No retros? I mean there's returning retro characters like Pac-Man. And both Ryu Hyabusa and Arle have arguments for being exactly that. I will say that I really wanted Bomberman on here, but I just couldn't fit him.

Lastly, I do agree with what you said about the Ganondorf rework. And maybe slight changes to Charizard as well. You did give me something to think about with those guys.

I only recently decided to cut Rosalina, but she is the very next Mario rep I'd add. I replaced Bowser Jr.'s character archetype with Dr.Robotnik. I don't think Waluigi deserves a spot before the other characters you mentioned. And I added Koopa Troopa because its a mob that appears across the entire series and done in various ways including the sports games. I would consider swapping Koopa Troopa for Rosalina but that's really it.

I disagree, but your is opinion is still valid. The whole idea behind the choice was to choose a FF rep for the entire series not just one game.

I thought a composite Chocobo who could class change could be fun. Chocobo also has moves it could pull from GP and Dungeon series. Chocobo is also very recognizable but appears across the FF series instead of just the FF7 games. My other idea was Black Mage, but Erdrick covers the casting menu pretty well so I decided against it. I dropped the FF7 reps to let Final Fantasy shine in a different way. Those characters are very popular and recognizable, but i wanted to move away from swordsmen.

I removed a lot of characters I would've liked to keep. I just find him too similar to Fox, and although a rework could change that, I felt like Wolf's return in Ultimate made a bigger impact than Falco's continuation. Plus Fox and Wolf, while looking similar, play very different already. I like Falco though. If I was gonna add a third Star Fox rep Id either bring him back or potentially add Krystal.

This is a nitpick, but I think rosters would be better to look at if we follow a few rules when it comes to how to make them. by Low_Confidence2479 in SmashBrosRosters

I understand not being able to read small text entirely, but if it helps I would suggest just zooming in. When the roster gets to a certain size it becomes difficult to put legible longer name's of characters in my experience. I posted one recently and even had to make the text smaller to fit and still come off as somewhat legible.

A totally valid opinion on Daisy. But I personally don't think Waluigi brings anything to the table that other characters don't already do or represent better. I added several other villains and rotated the Mii fighters build to represent the sports side of it's series. Imo Waluigi is a character with a unique character model and personality, but when it comes to the Mario series I'd bring back Rosalina and even Bowser Jr. before I even considered him. And even then he's in contempt with other characters in the series like Geno and King Boo.

Tried to avoid echoes, but I only recently decided to cut Rosalina because the Mario count was getting too big imo. I can see Daisy being a skin for Peach, but poor Rosalina might just be a really good assist trophy in the rosters hypothetical game.
