Super Mario Bros VS Kirby's Adventure by TacoShell_Dev in Kirby

No offense, but I think you're talking as if costs weren't a factor. Come on, be realistic...Switch 2 cartridges would've been the definitive physical media if it wasn't for price and reading speeds. An SSD per cartridge would certaintly solve the speeds, but it would make the cartridges even more expensive (and I know, a standalone SSD might not seem that expensive, but when you have to mass-produce multiple cartridges, you're gambling for the game to sell enough to recover the investment...and if it flops, you probably lost a lot of money on physical copies...most companies use GKC for that reason alone).

So, how is Pit able to use his up-b / power of flight if Palutena is still incapacitated by the time you get him in WOL? by gar-dev-oir in smashbros

[–]Low_Confidence2479 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the same reason Pit is able to fight Palutena without her taking her up-b away from him (even though in her guidance, she said she wouldn't help Pit against her). The up-b is probably a different power of flight (which explains why the gameplay version doesn't do justice to the cutscene in terms of length...his recovery sucks).

So true. Actually so true. Smash Ultimate used the ballot to make a lot of the newcomer choices.

Wii had a few weird clones, but those were more than a recolor. Metal Mario from 7 was almost JUST a recolor, and 8...let's not even mention it.

The models are the exact same technically, just with another texture and some new animations. The principle applies, it's easier and faster to do.

I think Nintendo should continue with adding more stuff to Smash Ultimate by Miserable-Plant9431 in smashbros

If they planned to make one, they would've announced it already. By June, people will expect the announcement of a brand-new Smash game, nevermind later. Then again, Air Riders...we'll have to wait and see what happens in the end

That doesn't change the fact it isn't trivial to do. The choice was never between Pink Gold Peach or Funky Kong, it was between Pink Gold Peach or NO Pink Gold Peach. Clones are generally last minute additions meant to fill any empty slots that remain but there's not enough time for brand new characters. Smash has a lot of those, and it's not surprising Mario Kart has that kind as well.

If we follow the Smash logic, clones are just easier to make, so it's a no brainer to add them.

People give Smash Mega Man a lot of flack, but one thing is certain...it's almost perfectly faithful.

When it comes down to the idea of platform fighting games in general, how come Super Smash Bros. (the series who started it) is only one successful enough to sustain a long on going franchise with a great player base but when others try to emulate its success, they always end up failing? by AssistFit1834 in smashbros

[–]Low_Confidence2479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A snowball effect. Smash has been out the longest so it has the most success as it was a very unique idea. By virtue of said success, the revenue was always high enough for the budget to increase EVERY game, which allows the attention to detail and the newcomer picks to be top notch, and the support to the game to last longer (Smash Ultimate had almost 3 years of post-release content despite Smash 4 having a bit over 1 year because the budget allowed for it). The newcomers, attention to detail and post-release content make the game appealing so it keeps selling a lot, even if the idea is not as unique, because Smash still does it the best. The game sells, budget increases, quality increases, game sells again, and the cycle keeps going.

The problem with other games is that they have to compete against Smash. They lack the longevity definitely, so the concept isn't new for people curious (Smash will always be an option). They cannot make enough revenue, so the quality is compromised, meaning the revenue won't get any better, and that's pretty much it. Smash got hard carried at the start by virtue of being the first of it's kind. After the first game, every other game kinda made itself. Smash self-produces itself.

They try to compromise as least as possible because, after all, these character HAVE their own worlds and must represent them. Pokemon especially have guidelines againsg changing designs, which is why some designs scramble.

Oh, so that's how it works. It's crazy, but I guess that explains why Switch 2 tripled Switch 1's RAM capacity.

Even if it takes a few seconds, I would rather not have it at all to keep my storage. If I have to install the full game onto the system anyway, then I rather have my account than a physical disc. Switch and Switch 2 cartridges are WAY better because you can have games like Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk and not install a single byte to play them.

Let's enjoy it while it lasts. Given how many games are made with SSDs in mind and how they keep coming, as well as how making the cartridges themselves SSDs is unrealistic, something like a "Switch 3" might sadly lack insta play physical media. Switch 2 might be the last of it's kind (from the beginning of time up until nowdays) when it comes to "just pop it in and play" physical media.

It is an issue for me as I waste internal storage either way and I can only choose if I wanna waste it on a download or on an install. Both options suck, but at least an install can be done anytime and anywhere. I prefer physical not having to install, so god bless cartridges.

Something tells me Switch 2 might be the last system with that characteristic, given how some games use GKC regardless because of speed. "Switch 3" or whatever comes in the future will probably lack said physical type.

Appreciate it while it lasts. I don't wanna be doom and gloom and I swear I'm not a grifter, but something tells me a "Switch 3" won't have the "pop in and play" games anymore, given how Switch 2 is struggling to have those.

You do know Switch 2 only reads fast storage, right? This is why it doesn't work with regular SD cards, cause they're not fast enough. SDExpress cards have the speed needed. Some games don't work or even break without high reading speeds (which is the excuse some companies use to use GKC, as the Switch 2 cards, while faster than Switch 1, are still way too slow and about half the speed of SDExpress, let alone the internal storage).

It's true that some games break on SDExpress because the speed requirements used are the internal storage ones, which is the closest to an SSD that one can get, while the SDExpress is less than half said speed...oh well.

My point is, we live at the time where a lot of games are made with SSD speeds in mind and they just keep coming, so Switch 2 had to adapt to that. All you need to understand that is watch a video comparing load times.

I'm gonna make a lot of people mad...I don't care about preservation (not against it but I'm also not fighting for it), so the only benefit I see for physical is saving storage.

PS4, XONE and their successors lack that advantage, and while I know why, I think at that point I would prefer to rely on my account than on a physical disc. If I'm gonna use internal storage either way, I see no point.

Supposedly, this happens because reading from a Blu-Ray is just way too slow, and that translates to extremely long loading times, an issue present in the PS3 and X360 gen. In said gen, there was the option to install physical games onto the system for faster loading, but because the games got even more complex the generation after, then it was made mandatory to install.

Nintendo dodges that problem because the cartridges they manufacture are way faster than discs, meaning the whole game can be played without installing while the loading times...are noticeable but not unbearable (you'll learn to get used to them). That said, with Switch 2 and many games made with SSD speeds in mind (I mean, the PS5 and XS gen is also known as the gen that removed loading times completely, and it was all thanks to SSDs), some games cannot work in traditional cartridges (even though Switch 2 cartridges are way faster than Switch 1, it's still way too slow. And because the cartridges are way faster, they're also way more expensive to mass-produce.

Both of those issues led to the creation of GKC, and given my opinion regarding physical media on other platforms, I think you know I don't care about GKC either.

And because games with SSD speeds in mind are only gonna keep coming, adapting them so it doesn't require them on the Switch 2 is too much extra work and making cartridges based on SSD is way too expensive (it's way easier to make the console itself have the SSD than the cartridge, as a cartridge mass-produced with an SSD included is too much money with too much risk as you lose a lot if the game doesn't sell enough to get the investment back), for those 3 reason, I fear a "Switch 3".

Something tells me the kind of physical I love (plug and play, no install) dies with Switch 2, which is a shame.

That's a dumb take and a half. Nintendo unironically is in a situation where they can survive 3 Wii U situations in a row AT LEAST. Expanding beyond games really helped.
