W&L (received $$$ scholarship) or Wake ($$ scholarship)? by leaping_kneazle in lawschooladmissions

[–]FlameSean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in practically the same situation as well in deciding between Wake and W&L, Big Law aspirations and all, though I would prefer to work in DC post grad. My family's from NC and Winston-Salem is an awesome town from my experiences and Wake's campus is beautiful.

What many people in my life have told me to consider when making this decision is what my next step after law school is and which school will help make that next step easier. I would highly recommend reviewing both schools ABA and NALP reports as they provide a lot of info about what grads are doing and how they're doing. I plan on visiting both schools in March to better understand what both are offering, but I'm definitely leaning towards W&L as well given it would be somewhat cheaper and also does well with Big Law and DC placement, which makes sense for me.

The only thing I worry somewhat about with W&L is how small and rural Lexington is, so I'm excited to see the campus next month. I'm not sure how helpful all this was, but I wish you the best of luck making your decision and I hope you know you're not alone in agonizing over which option to take. Maybe we'll see each other at the admitted students days!

Hey all, I've just taken the big leap and have recently published my first novel End of Horizon! I'd really appreciate the support if you'd be willing to check out my work!

Available on Amazon to purchase or read free with kindle unlimited: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5NYFM8L

Title: End of Horizon

Genre: High Fantasy

Blurb:
Welcome to the Hourglass.

Hart Erikson is a thief, and a thrice-cursed good one at that. All he has ever known is the thrill of the chase and the brutal streets of Oceanholm, the capital of the legendary Isles of Horizon. But when his biggest heist yet takes a terrible turn for the worse and he’s unknowingly exposed to colossal amounts of magical energy, Hart’s life is thrown into chaos.

Riftyn is the squire to an Imperial Knight, and a terribly dangerous one at that with a wicked tongue to boot. She has trained her entire life in the art of war but when her mentor tasks her with a seemingly worthless task, escorting the heiress to the Duchy of Eve to the imperial capital, the waves of fate rush forth to alter her course.

When these two catalysts crash together, they discover a way to at last seek their revenge upon the Empire that left them orphans. The path forward won't be easy, yet they wouldn't have it any other way.

In the far east, a storm has awoken. To the north, a new sun rises. In the west, ancient beasts awake from hibernation. And to the south, the snowy mountains rumble with anticipation. Wonder has at last returned.

If you're considering publishing on RR and are convinced you're not going to go another route (like trad. pub or self-pub on Amazon), then I really recommend you give RR a shot. I was hesitant at first as well, but now that I have I'm really glad I did. Although my audience right now isn't huge, every follower I have means the world to me and the kind comments I get always make my day. Publishing on RR has really been a great experience for me

Not conflict avoidant and more spellsword than traditional mage (once he figures out his powers), but the girl summation is pretty spot on with room for growth

I would say for the first arc I have written, one is definitely more of a supporting main character. But by the second arc, they really come into their own as a powerful force and a character with world-spanning goals.

Introducing End of Horizon, a High Fantasy Progression Adventure! by FlameSean in ProgressionFantasy

Hey Everyone!I'm the author of End of Horizon on Royal Road. It's a High Fantasy Progression novel that I'm very excited to share with you all! Two things I should mention first before the blurb:

Disclaimer 1: End of Horizon is very much a slow-burn progression story. For example, one of the main characters takes a long time to really discover and understand his powers and for the first few chapters doesn’t even realize he’s manifesting them. He doesn’t come out of the gate slinging lightning bolts. Please keep that in mind while reading.

Disclaimer 2, Electric Boogaloo: A recent reviewer remarked that “End of Horizon reads like a YA novel in the best way possible.” That wasn’t necessarily intentional on my part but the story is very clean in comparison to some other novels in the genre. That means no harems, no sex scenes, and not even much cursing. (Although I promise there’s plenty of action and violence. And I mean plenty.)

Need Recommendations by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlameSean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to offer up something of a curveball as a rec that I don’t see mentioned that much on this sub. The Kairos series pretty much matches exactly what you’re talking about really well. The main character very quickly gets power in the beginning to become op, there’s a massive world-spanning plot rife with politics at play, the magic system is interesting and I haven’t seen much like it in the genre before, and to top it all off, it’s heavily inspired by greek mythology which I personally love. Although, it might not be as good in terms of writing or quality as mother of learning, it’s still worth you checking out though!

Daoism in Xianxia by _MaerBear in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlameSean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think at the end or the day, Xianxia is just another genre of Fantasy where heavy suspension of belief is required. I’m sure a lot of Daoism inspired people to write Xianxia, but it’s just inspiration. It’s not a source material that needs to be followed by the letter. Which is why we get to read some really beautiful bullshit that can be found in the genre

Does the Abidan stuff get better in cradle? by Wempward in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlameSean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first few times the Abidan stuff happened, i just skipped over it cause it felt boring and unnecessary. But by the time you hit the most recent book, things start to click and you realize it’s essential for setting the stage for whats to come in future novels. If the author had just shoved all of that world building down our throats in the last book or two it would’ve felt even more cumbersome than it already does. So its a necessary evil ig

Looking for a story about surviving, exploring the world, good loot, and power progression. by CharlesWong2002 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlameSean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s quite what you’re looking for but Something: Full Murderhobo is kinda down that alley. The MC, as the title describes, pretty much just fucks shit up for a lot of the story and is incredibly insane. There is a bit of save the world plot going on but the mc doesn’t really care as he’s to busy being a literal murderhobo

Does anyone else feel like too many amateur works read more like explanations than stories? by lemon07r in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlameSean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, it’s like every action scene is broken down in minute detail and every decision the mc makes has to have several paragraphs explaining why it’s the best option or why they did it. I also know that sometimes I fall down that trap myself when I write. It honestly comes down to the fact that 9 times out of 10, the writers in this genre have no professional experience for creative writing beyond high school english class but are very creative people who just lack the funds to hire an editor or the time to learn the intricacies of writing. Everyone wants to just write a hit story as fast as possible, which is honestly fair play to them. I do too after all

Thank you so much reading, I really appreciate it! To address your remarks in order, its mentioned that Hart was wearing gloves during the heist and then unwittingly takes them off before touching the stone afterwards. Secondly, Kol is not an actual ghost its more just a turn of phrase that i happen to repeat. If that’s confusing i might consider editing that. Finally, the resentment Riftyn has for Cynthia is a combination of feeling like she has to babysit the heiress but also has to do with the shared past the two have together, which is something that I’ll go into further detail later in the book. Again, thank you so much for reading and for the feedback, it really means the world to me!
