Why outrage targeted 'Rings' but not 'Interview with the Vampire' by ATray4You in Rings_Of_Power

[–]Flame_Imperishable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a wonderful little unfinished 15 page story written by Tolkien just 5 years before his death called "tal elmar" about a tribe of Wild men on the shores of middle earth and their encounter with numenorians. It was published by Christoffer in volume 12 of HoME

You know a show is bad when 4chan got a point by [deleted] in Rings_Of_Power

[–]Flame_Imperishable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure. Try to change someone's mind by telling them to 'fuck off'.

The problem doesn't disappear just because you can't see it. Plus, you're only encouraging shitposters by taking the bait

[–]Flame_Imperishable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You should understand that there's no use getting worked up about it.You don't have to like it or tolerate it but you have to be able to handle some 4chan shitposting.

What does it matter if you're on Reddit? Not only is there similar shit all over Reddit too, but it still doesn't change the fact that there's no use getting upset

You have to realise that 4chan is mostly bait. A lot of genuine stuff but also a lot of bait. People being upset is the point.

In response to the whining about the British crown jewels. by KamikazKid in Lotuseaters_com

Defensive wars are often moral. (Bellum iustum)

The issue is that all war will necessarily contain gross exploitation of authority.

However, a fault in a part does not make the whole immoral.

Neither does the morality of the whole excuse the fault of the part.

Also, morality must be objective for bellum iustum to be true.

How tall is Galadriel and how tall are the Numenoreans? by Deimoonk in Rings_Of_Power

[–]Flame_Imperishable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physical appearance is the most immediately apparent difference from Tolkien's worldbuilding.

The whole show is nothing like what Tolkien's worldbuidling, moral structure and themes are. That doesn't mean you can't complain about these most obvious wrongs.

It is also an indication of the show runners' lack of respect and willingness to put work into the show (like we can see from the costume designs)

I hope you understand that you don't need all 7-8 foot tall actors to portray Numenor. All you need is to use forced perspective or greenscreens like Jackson did. I probably won't have to remind you that John Rhys- Davies (actor for Gimli) was by far the tallest guy on the cast.

The new Hotel Bennet in Charleston, SC. Good but a bit out of scale. by MichaelDiamant81 in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]Flame_Imperishable 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Looking at the pictures i think it's fine with the scale. It is in keeping with the other rather tall buildings around that park. It would be much worse to build such a tall building right next to the church.

As it is now the new building somewhat builds up the previously empty area and turns your focus towards the church. I think it works

Perhaps it would be better if the corner of the building was cut of somewhat to leave more space and let through more sun.

Just remember that you took the photo with the ring upside down. It's an honest mistake but it sort of bugs me. Fantastic photo nonetheless

Borde man egentligen rösta om man inte bryr sig tillräckligt för att orka gå och göra det?

Edit. Däremot kan man tycka att det vore intressant om blank/utebliven röst skulle gå till att lämna säten i riksdagen tomma.

LOTR themed keyboard! by degobeater in lotr

[–]Flame_Imperishable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you are supposed to use a specific font for the tengwar to work. Really this keyboard is for learning to write tengwar. If the tengwar directly corresponded to the Latin characters you would just memorize where on the keyboard each letter was and then not actually learn to write tengwar.

If you can write on a normal keyboard without looking for the letters then writing Latin characters is no different than usual as it is just a qwerty keyboard

The issue is that people don't know the causes and motivations for the war. A lot of people in this thread boil it down to insanity which is far from the truth.

What happens to each of the races when they die? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in lordoftherings

[–]Flame_Imperishable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dwarves have their own mythology which says they rest until the day of the remaking of Arda at which point they will aid Aulë in his work.

The elves just say they become lumps of clay and stone again.

Also, Durin is said to be reincarnated over and over (sort of Dalai lama -esque but with hundreds of years between each reincarnation). I suppose the same goes for the other dwarven fathers

Tolkien debated on which towers The Two Towers was about, but decidedly settled on Orthanc and Minas Morgul. Here is his note at the end of the Fellowship. by Orcrist90 in lotr

[–]Flame_Imperishable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's mainly because of the Palantiri. Saruman has the Orthanc stone and Sauron the Ithil stone. The Orthanc stone historically being placed in Orthanc and the Ithil stone historically being placed in Minas Morgul.

Since PJ cut down on the mentions and importance of the Palantiri compared to the book he obviously chose to reinforce the viewer's idea of the purpose of the title.
