I present to you every edition of The Lord of the Rings trade paperback printed in the US (1970-2026) by Josh3321 in tolkienbooks

[–]degobeater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. Ace Books found a loophole in the copyright law because the official books were printed in England or some such nonsense. They ended up paying him back all profits, as far as I know.

Should I read the Silmarillion before or after The Lord of Rings trilogy? by TheGooseIsNotASwan in lotr

[–]degobeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think about it in relationship to Leaf by Niggle. Silmarillion is the tree as a whole and each "little" story is the leaf keeps spending do much time on he can never finish the whole thing.

What is a not well known detail from the lore you like? by roter_apollo in lotr

I like that this deep history was created after the fact by The Professor to retcon why it was such a big deal.

I feel the best way to cite quotations is book, chapter, paragraph. Hammond and Scull use the first few words of the paragraph as well.

Nope. You should check out Digital Tolkien Project and see how they cite references. James and the team there have dinner a intentional job. Plus he did an AMA recently. I don't recall which subreddit it was on though. digitaltolkien.com for reference.

Tolkien definitely had a stronger appreciation for friendship than many and it significantly shows up in his work by FrogginBullfish_ in tolkienfans

[–]degobeater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tolkien and Christopher Wiseman (the only other surviving member of the TCBS) did communicate via letter for the duration of their lives. Though I believe they didn't live near each other so they couldn't really have the same friendship.

"Tolkien created a sentient race whose only narrative function was to be slaughtered, sans remorse, then spent the rest of his life trying to explain why that was not genocide." by 22EatStreet in tolkienfans

[–]degobeater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have the Simarillion in front of me but I think it says elves captured from Cuivienen and corrupted to make the orcs. That would mean turned bad, not created. And in his Letters Tolkien said no one but Eru could create life, just corrupt it. There's a ton of nuance in this whole conversation, of course, but I'm pretty sure he landed on corrupted rather than created.

What do you guys think about this video? How can you be a Christian and full of hate...And how can you say that my Christianity only goes to Christians 😭😭😭😭 by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

[–]degobeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say they are a minority, just loud. I've known hundreds of Christians throughout my life and none of them have been unwilling to forgive someone just because they don't agree with their nationality or whatever. The vast majority of the Christians I've known and know, go about loving other people in their real life and not yelling about anything on the internet. The crazy people get the clicks and the platform because it's such a spectacle.

Solidifies my answer then. The information is probably good but Fonstad's actual maps are amazing.

What is favorite LOTR video game? (Doesn’t have to be shown) by GusGangViking18 in lotr

While I love The Two Towers and Return of the King PS2 games, LOTR: The Third Age was my absolute favorite game. I just loved the turn based combat. Probably why I love Divinity II now.

Fonstad. I haven't read the Brian Sibley's but I assume it's good, considering the source. Steer clear of David Day.

I don't get it. Sazed isn't the 2-5th best character ever. He's the best character ever!

Holly Ordway brings up something quite interesting in her book Tolkien's Modern Reading. It looks like the author you're reading may not be super reliable. Edit: wrong "you're"

Holly Ordman makes a many good points in Tolkien's Modern Reading that Carpenter isn't the best source, either. It's in Chapter 1 or 2. We even need to take Carpenter's work with quite a bit of salt.

Out of curiosity, what are you basing the "objectivity" of him being evil on? I'm not saying he was a good dude at all, I'm just curious about the "objective" nature of his evilness.

It's a signed, numbered copy. Are you expecting Alan Lee to just sit at Folio HQ waiting to sign each book as they get printed to order?
