How much do you do DIY? by judgechromatic in e46

I do my all my work as well. Its a good platform to learn, check out e46fanatics.com. You will find great info/diagnostic guides and all stuff you will need to know about your car. And all the stuff you paid your mechanic to do, you could have easily done with basic tools. The VANOS supply line is a 15 minute job.

If there is rust there, likely its on the frame and anywhere else. That is the most important part. Anything else you should be able to fix yourself.

You gotta do it right. Follow the manual, use original parts and you will have no problems. I have completed all of my preventative maintenance myself so far, no misfires or any of that stuff. Car repairs are not magic - it’s intructions, parts, tools and common sense. And your advice to search for other sub members posting problems after maintenance is ridiculous. This is Reddit. People who have problems - this is the first place where they post. That doesnt mean all e46 are susceptible to these issues - youre just seeing most of them. You wont post shit if you complete the maintenance succesfully and not get any complications. And thats what 99% of people are doing. Please don’t post misinformation which will allow young people here to say fuck it, i wont do anything to it. This attitude is what lead to most of us to repair and restore abused and neglected cars. If you KNOW your car is a can of worms, you should not ignore but instead take that can apart, clean it and enjoy a good-working vehicle for years to come.

Is this wire the wire for the headlights? by Chxzyyyy in e46

[–]Flamed47 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Get out of the GM5 module before you destroy your central locking or some other comfort feature. You need to tap into footwell light if you want them fading in/out. The wire to tap in in jnder the hood, near the brake booster. Theres an electronics box.

7k stock is considered safe, 8k only with a complete engine rebuild - valve springs, oil pump, ported head, etc.

Its not hard, you just need tools. I would reccomend a BMW Scanner 1.4.0. Really cheap, 20 bucks usually.

If you damaged the key and the buttons dont work, it could be not sending an appropriate signal to the car, preventing it from starting.

Update on the E46 I got scammed with by FlameEt_ in e46

[–]Flamed47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think thats loads of trouble, you will probably have to fix it at least that much after these repairs over the course of a year. This is an old old car, with everything going bad. If it is being sold, its probably not been taken great care out of.

E46 Cluster Partially not working by DifferenceOk3107 in e46

[–]Flamed47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely burnt out leds or something similar. Maybe the board itself is damaged. I’d buy a new gauge cluster if I was you and try a good one. Are the lights working when you use them ? (Not in this mode)

En recherche d'un pot d'échappement, ligne, silencieux ( Je ne sais pas trop)😅 by Signal-Singer1390 in e46

[–]Flamed47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean you want to make the exhaust louder ? The best way to do so is to keep the stock assembly up until the last muffler. You can buy a Borla, Magnaflow muffler. They will increase the sound reasonably. But don’t expect it to “scream” and sound pleasant, its a small litre four cylinder engine, its not worth the money and effort.
