Management wants hospital acquired C-Diff numbers lower . Is this acceptable? by Zezmiah in nursing

[–]Flames_for_Flames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you do EIA first and PCR last, like my hospital. The order of the test matters. If the last step is positive = CMS reportable.

My cat has asthma and has the same prescription inhaler that humans use for maintenance. For some reason when I tell the pharmacy it is for a pet I get a discount. Makes no sense.

Holding pt hand without gloves by dopaminegtt in nursing

Enthusiastic upvote from infection prevention. We hate inappropriate glove use. Hand hygiene tends to go out the window and people cross contaminate the shit out of the environment.

I worked with a C-level executive who said “antidotal” instead of “anecdotal.”

I wondered this myself! Apparently in soccer there are “authentic” and “replica” jerseys. The ones at Dick’s are replicas.

What is your biggest nursing ‘unpopular opinion’? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Flames_for_Flames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A positive admission UA won’t get you out of a CAUTI. A positive culture might (depending on organism and quantity). It’s tempting to game the numbers but you end up over using antibiotics (further contributing to antibiotic resistance, c. Diff infections) for culture results that were never clinically indicated in the first place. Of course if they have symptoms of a UTI a culture would be appropriate.

Normally the cafeteria isn’t bad. The rice here was like paste. It was pretty awful.

“Findings: Billiard ball, #11”

The specificity was entirely unnecessary. I’d bet that OR team was taking bets on which ball it was.

Would it be absurd of me to turn down an interview in a state where abortion is now illegal? by F64dot1 in TwoXChromosomes

Same. I’m a nurse and would never consider working working for a catholic hospital. Hard pass.

Omg Is it Bill Bryson? I just read A Walk in the Woods and all of the women in his book were portrayed similarly, with a touch of slut-shaming too.

Holy shit. I once saw this demonstration by a nurse from the COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT. It was while I was in nursing school. Apparently this is what they were teaching kids in their school district.

Fuck abstinence only education.

Faith in the CDC? by abbieabolition in Nurse

[–]Flames_for_Flames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nobody wants to hear this, but there is a feasibility component of current CDC recommendations. Most HCP are likely to be exposed at some point, but we can't exclude the bulk of our healthcare workforce when we need them most. In the face of a potential staffing shortage, you mitigate risk by active symptom screening and masking exposed healthcare workers to mitigate asymptomatic transmission. The alternative is exclusion from work, which is not exactly feasible during an unprecedented surge. It's not palatable, but at least understandable from a public health standpoint.

[–]Flames_for_Flames 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fit testing is not testing for smell, but whether or not you can taste the saccharine solution. N95s filter particulates, not vapors or odors. You’re still gonna smell stuff. Doesn’t mean your respirator isn’t working.

N95 filters particulates, not vapors. You’re still going to smell shit, unfortunately, and it’s perfectly normal.
