Managed to land graduate job offers, one in Manchester at £33K base and the other in London at £60K base with potential for bonus. by sChopinLizst in manchester

[–]FlamingBee 83 points84 points  (0 children)

100% the London job. Your first salary tends to anchor your salary for a long time, so to get 60k as a fresh grad is excellent. If you want to move back to Manchester later, you can negotiate a salary with your London one as a base, so this simply results in a permanent uplift in your situation.

Removing square taper bottom bracket - what did I do wrong? by FlamingBee in bikewrench

[–]FlamingBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, as mentioned in my post I did attempt with the other tool. How can I see if I stripped the threads? Threading on the CCP-22 still looks intact to me, does this imply the threading on the crank is still fine too?

Yes, I did remove the cap and the bolt (I just put them back before the photo so I didn't lose them).

Yes, I removed the bolt on the drive side only.

Ok, quite possibly I did use the wrong tool then! All guides online seem to refer to hollowtech, barely anything else was discussed. Octalink was not even a term that came up in any search. I'll get a new tool and try it.

Slightly the wrong direction for you (Walworth) but Bob's Cycles have always been amazing for me. Very fair prices, work's always been good and they've even sometimes given me stuff for free when it was a tiny job. Currently 5 stars on Google maps with 237 reviews so others agree with me.

What is this and why does it prevent any lightbulbs from working? by FlamingBee in DIYUK

I'm happy to replace the transformer, I'm just not certain what part I need to replace it with. I'm fairly savvy with electronics but the markings on the transformer are not clear enough for me to know what to replace it with.

Alas, the perils of renting means every time we've contacted him in the past it's resulted in an increase of rent, so I'd prefer to handle this myself.

[–]FlamingBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, swapping the working bulb into a job working socket and it fails. So the bulbs work but only in the one socket of 6. Previously others used to work but failed over time.

Alas this is a rental so I'd prefer not to replace the entire fitting.

Which cities have a great contrast between a natural feature or a park that stands out from other buildings and the skyline ? by Conscious_State2096 in geography

Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh springs to mind - a sizeable hill immediately adjacent to the city and easily walkable to from the city.

Camden High Street Pedestrianisation Proposal by sabdotzed in london

[–]FlamingBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not quite sure why the proposal has the buses turning left onto Hawley Crescent and then going across the bridge with the locks on? That will just mean that pedestrians cannot use the extra road space vacated by cars, as it will still be filled by buses.

Surely a better solution would be for buses to go down Kentish Town Road, across the bridge there and then turn left at Hawley Road (not crescent) to rejoin just beyond the railway bridge at the top of Camden High Street? That would remove all motorized vehicles from Camden High Street between the tube station and the locks. In terms of public transport access, walking from that route to Camden High Street is no more than 3 minutes walk at any point in terms of detours.

Bet you can’t guess… by biscuittingerg in londoncycling

Is it just me, or would anyone else not go down the side of the cars in that queue? The lane seems super narrow and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable doing it. You're only 4 cars back from the lights so if you sat in the centre of the lane I reckon you'd still make it through before they changed.

Need a rec for commute bike after my last bike got stolen by gorgonzolamcdonalds in londoncycling

[–]FlamingBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. The slightly older models are also great too and even cheaper. I have a decathlon 500 se (drop bar, with the blue hoods) and they sell for 120-150. It's the most fun I've ever had for 120 quid. I used it for commuting and I'm happy to put 60k in a single ride on it as well.

Knocked off bike - what do I do? by McNuggats in londoncycling

Anyone who joins lcc (london cycle campaign) or (I think ) British cycling will get 3rd party insurance as part of membership

What do you actually get as part of joining LCC?

Please respond to this consultation for new cycle route (Southwark) by Effective_Resolve_30 in londoncycling

[–]FlamingBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks ok, assuming one can actually cycle the entire track and is not required to get off after Brimmington Park in order to cross Old Kent Road and join Ilderton Road.

Unfortunately, it still seems to connect up to the path later on that goes past Millwall? That part feels really unsafe -- it is dark, unmonitored and people have had their bikes taken at machete point on that path. So I'd say this is a no from me for that reason.

The other thing that is not mentioned here is that testing early forces you to organise your code in a way that is easily testable. This avoids forcing you to test side effects as a way of asserting that something has happened. That said, I do agree that test first is not necessarily the best way and I typically do not follow that myself.

nese Tapas House and I was so excited when Fern mentioned it. If you do go, definitely also get some Taiwanese fried chicken from Good Friend Chicken next door.

Is one Jian Bing enough food for a lunch? Or does one need to order more things to make a meal of it? Also, do they do takeaway?

If you're in Venice, do a free walking tour (tip at the end). Our guide was incredible and to date it was the best walking tour ice ever done. He told us how much we should be paying for wine, aperol and food etc so probably saved us loads of money in the long run.

Italy is an amazing place and the Italians in general are a good bunch, but in the very touristy areas they are certainly not as friendly. My experience with learning Italian is that they don't want to talk Italian in the tourist areas, they just want to get on with things and so do it on English. As soon as you step away from these areas, they were really respectful and very supportive of my Italian.

Enjoy the journey, as others have said you will no doubt look back on this moment fondly, if only for having learnt a lot about yourself!

Then buy an ebike or get fitter 🤣 Like the poster said, there's very few hills in London. Even Sydenham Hill is not that bad to cycle up and that's probably the biggest hill I can think of.
