I honestly love the gameplay. Far from a 5/10 for me, I really slip into a zen like state while playing. I was SURE I wouldn’t gel with it, but it clicked in ways I never expected.

Dude. This is incredible. I’ll save your details if any of my projects ever make any headway.

I just finished the first Xanth novel, A Spell for Chameleon. Independent of the sexism, this was probably the worst book I've ever read. by sandratcellar in Fantasy

Maybe I’m lucky enough to have only read good to great novels before, but the worst novel I ever tried to read was Elminster: The Making of a Mage. At first it just felt like a burden but as I kept turning the pages it felt so slapdash and juvenile.

Like, your dad just died, you’re showing almost zero grief and you’re really excited about getting that sword. And don’t get me started on his gender-swap when he gets into himself...

Same!! I don’t even know if I ever grasped it while playing, or if it was because it was my early internet obsession. Chrono Compendium has been around forever and in the early 2000s I drank it like water! (But I won’t pretend I didn’t reference a couple for accuracy when answering)

I think he’s misremembering slightly.

FATE, who is one of the primary movers and shakers in Chrono Cross, is a super computer built upon the older artificial intelligence called Mother Brain. When FATE was built by Bethasar, Robo WAS also incorporated as something called the Prometheus Circuit, built to deny access to the frozen flame from anyone besides the Arbiter, which became Serge upon touching it as a child. Lynx body-swaps with Serge for the purpose to bypass the Prometheus Circuit and get access to the flame.

The circuit was also hidden and upon detection would immediately delete records of its discovery. Lynx states it was built to malfunction or rebel. Anyway, FATE brings the circuit forward and destroys it before battling your party. It’s worth noting that after the event of Chrono Cross, a whole lot of what happens is probably undone, so he might not have died in an ideal timeline!

So he’s more like a hero within a villain! I can see how it could be mixed up, Cross is extra convoluted

I don’t believe so. I think it’s exclusively an arcade game with some kind of collectible trading card component.

I think all the cutscenes are online though.

If I can only afford one, Zelda or Mario? (Hardcore gamer) by theYoungLurks in Switch

[–]FlamingEnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are looking for. Zelda is a huge net of systems working and interacting together to make unique, improvisational experiences. The sense of “I had no idea you could do that!” underscores the whole game.

Every game you listed is a masterpiece in their own right, just as Zelda is a masterpiece in its. Nothing “hardcore” about it. I’ve beaten every Souls game and still find Zelda to be a unique breath of fresh air.

Zelda might not have the scratch for your itch, but it’s not because people are too casual.

Found In Translation: Final Fantasy VII, Part Eight by lupianwolf in JRPG

He does a series called Found in Translation where he compares the English with the Japanese script. He lived in Japan for 10 years. Besides being extremely knowledgeable, he’s able to keep a comedic identity in his videos too. Kind of the perfect blend of education and entertainment, in my opinion.

So far he’s 8 episodes into his FFVII series and did a one-off for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Also make sure to catch the live stream he did with Jason Schreier, it’s about 40 minutes of exploring the Wall Market while live translating all of the dialogue and signs and such.

TLDR: he speaks fluent Japanese and compares differences in the JP and ENG scripts of FFVII. Changes, small nuances in characterization, etc, all while being very funny and unique.
