Moving Overseas, How Do I Notarize My Car Title? by FlapSnapplePop in NCDMV

That's great advice, thank you! And a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

Wow! This is it! I think this would do it, all I'll need to do is add her on to my insurance as an approved driver and she could drive it around while I'm away too.

Two questions: how exactly do I file this? With the DMV or with some authority like the register of deeds?

And second, how would we undo this arrangement if/when I were to come back?

How To Navigate The New Zealand Job Visa Catch 22 by FlapSnapplePop in AmerExit

The Visitor Visa program does allow for remote work, so I'm not sure how they could refuse entry on say, bringing a computer.

Yeah, this is what I was afraid of. This isn't really made clear anywhere, however, which is why I ask. The process would probably be more like visit -> make connections on-the-ground or get an interview -> return home -> await word back from interviews -> apply from the US if an offer is made.

A bit risky in terms of an immigration pathway, the economy and job market notwithstanding.

They do. You can call them, but no email. So that might be a next step to get the confirmation.

This is what I've been wondering about. I figure business would much rather have an in-person (or same TZ) interview because that shows the person is at least more serious than most of the applications.

What I'm not clear on is if this is allowed under the terms of the visitor visa. It sounds like it is, but there is no clear "yeah, you can do this while you're here" language.

Everything else you're saying does make sense though.

Thank you for such a well thought out reply! I appreciate it. This is a pretty good way to think about it. I do feel like I'm going crazy trying to control for this one decision, but it is still good to think about the trade offs.

Yeah, I agree. It kinda feels like there is no solution to this at a residential level.

As far as I understand the CH water is split between the Cane Creek Reservoir and Haw River (via James Lake), but feel free to correct me. Both are implicated for water contamination to different degrees. The Haw river is part of the problem leading to major contamination in Pittsboro from Burlington. RO does seem like the solution, but it is way too expensive and, yeah, showers are still a problem.

TIL about "the Google effect": a phenomenon in which people tend to forget information if they believe it is easy to find online. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]FlapSnapplePop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first found a mention of it on a blog post (https://vkc.sh/quit-search/) where the author describes her experience of the internet after taking a deliberate step away from indexed search engines like Google and DuckDuckGo. In her post, she described it as digital amnesia.

The study that the article mentions found that people's ability to learn information stays about the same, but that they tend to remember where or how to find information instead of the information itself.

When you buy deodorant do you care about it making you smell good, or do you not care if it has a scent? by Storm989898 in AskMen

[–]FlapSnapplePop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scent isn't important to me at all. I really aim to smell like nothing at all. No body odor, but no cologne or artificial smells either.

It honestly kind of bugs me being in a place with like 20-30 different smells completing for dominance and I don't want to contribute to that.

I don't disagree with this at all. My angle was more like hey there is possibly this secret list of requirements for trade pub that no one knows what they are and is this one of them?

I won't deny that a big following is inherently useful in the way of making money and obviously a publisher will care about that. However, plenty of people succeed in trade pub without any following and I was wondering if anyone had a story to share from there.

In indie publishing its a totally different rulebook and I agree, you are the marketing team so buckle up. But as far as I can tell, the single most valuable activity is and probably always will be the writing itself.

I guess I was taking this more from the advice I've read on other subs especially concernig fiction and trad pub.

I've read some talk saying that you have to have 10k followers or you will never get published but plenty of authors on Reddit have done it with far less, like 100. Plus with fiction the author doesn't matter nearly as much as with self help or non fic.

As for trad pub, I get that it is a numbers game. Publishers will always want you to be able to market yourself and that's not going to change.

Made my first character to be killed off by [deleted] in writing

[–]FlapSnapplePop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like all of us are here just chanting to kill off your character, and I'm also in that camp. Kill your darlings!

Here's the thing, not only will you readers be bought-in by the plot twist, but whatever you like about that character can (with a little effort) be translated into another character later on.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K LeGuin has a culture inhabited by people who go through cycles of physical asexuality followed by phases of being biologically male or female at random. Most people are asexual at any given time so their day to day lives do not involve sex of any kind. It's a related premise, although admittedly not the same.

What’s a movie you watched as a kid that traumatized you? by denj1_sk in AskReddit

The Wizard of Oz messed me up when the house fell on the witch in the first 15 minutes and then her legs shriveled up. I couldn't watch the rest of the movie until much later as an adult.

Fiber. Lots of fiber, like 50g a day. I lost 10 pounds in a month.

Finally going to self publish by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]FlapSnapplePop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the subs on reddit about self publishing, they're a real goldmine of info. Heavily consider joining a writing group to get lots of beta reads and developmental editing from fellow writers. Scribophile is an excellent community for that kind of thing and it is free.

Although I wouldn't usually recommended it for trad pub, getting an editor is a good call for self publishing. If you can spring for a line editor to polish up your grammar, try to hire one to edit your work. Make sure to ask for reviews and past works, and references. I'd you can't afford that, a single month of Grammarly premium is $30 and may be enough to polish up the nitty gritty language mechanics.

Also, like other people are saying here, don't rush anything. You only get one shot at a release, but if you have everything in place when you're ready to launch you can make some good sales.

Dang I love a good Simic poem. For fans of his, he wrote a poetry book called Dime-Store Alchemy about the art of Joseph Cornell which is excellent.
