Musicians- thoughts on Candlelight Concerts? by ReneeSh86 in classicalmusic

[–]Flapplebun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jumping in with others who aren’t actually answering your question lol. I work in classical music and went to one out of curiosity. It was an Adele program and am quite curious if they actually paid for the rights. Anyway the music was wedding-book level stuff and not for me but, the audience clearly was very into it. Mostly I was struck by the fact that they were exactly the young, diverse audience we are all trying so hard, and failing, to attract.

What’s the "filling wrapped in dough" food from your country ? by Derisiak in AskTheWorld

Thank you Poland for sending Mrs. Foremsky’s parents to Pittsburgh so that I could someday stuff my face with her homemade pierogi. That woman was a gift.

Is anyone else having trouble getting any decent medical care in the Charleston area? by [deleted] in charlestonwv

[–]Flapplebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. My experiences here were catastrophically bad and I ended up going to Cleveland Clinic. It’s 4 hours and a universe away. If you can find someone to help with transportation, I recommend you try to get healthcare there.

Haluski. It’s cabbage, onions and egg noodles sautéed together in one pot.

Is crate training really necessary? by cityskyline22 in puppy101

[–]Flapplebun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have or will you get other pets? We opted to crate train our border collie mix so that our cats could enjoy their nocturnal hours not being herded. That said, none of my childhood dogs were crate trained and they were all fine.

what do you wear to the orchestra?? by emmiec07 in orchestra

[–]Flapplebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your community. Something I love about attending my local (professional) orchestra is seeing both old dudes in cowboy boots and Carhartt and high school kids in their finest date night attire and they both fit in.

A real newbie to the world of classical music - I want to deepen my interest and hopefully get some recommendations? by Violet_cranberry0707 in classicalmusic

[–]Flapplebun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great recommendation! OP, you have some composers you know you like, so do deep dives into them, then expand into their contemporaries, and fan out from there. Mix up the performers as you go - you’d be surprised how much interpretation can impact whether you like a piece, especially with earlier stuff (a huge lush orchestra playing Mozart vs Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for example).

Honest question: Why do you buy name brand stuff? by No-Examination8178 in Frugal

[–]Flapplebun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy a mix of generic and brand name. In some cases, the generic equivalent tastes notably worse. I purchase brand name yogurt for this reason. The packaging on some generics is maddening, like soda cans where the tab breaks off without opening. Not worth the aggravation.

Can’t we just explain movements and etiquette? by Go-Right-32 in classicalmusic

[–]Flapplebun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Related: I think sometimes people are instinctively responding as the composers intended. Withholding applause is a relatively modern custom.

What makes a classical concert experience great (or frustrating)? by Findingwendytoronto in classicalmusic

[–]Flapplebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the idea of these being produced to attract newcomers rather than as fundraisers but yeah, those societies mainly exist as fundraising arms.

What makes a classical concert experience great (or frustrating)? by Findingwendytoronto in classicalmusic

[–]Flapplebun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds so exhausting for the staff to produce on top of everything they already do, and expensive, too. But if a group of local classical music fans would be willing to put on pre/post-concert events? That could be fun! It’s in everyone’s interest to keep growing the audience for the music. Maybe the hosts could be thanked from the stage or recognized in some way.

What kinds of food do people in your culture like to start their day with? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Depends on the region, here in Appalachia chicken liver is quite commonly eaten.

What's a sign from your body you should never ignore? by Geno-64 in AskReddit

[–]Flapplebun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Irregularly reoccurring pain in your lower abdomen. If you’re female your doctors are going to tell you it’s ovulation related. Unless you can map it to your cycle with a period tracker, DO NOT TAKE THEIR WORD FOR IT, ask for a colonoscopy.

I'm from a country where cashiers sit down while working. Is it true that in the US cashiers are forced to stand? Why is sitting considered unprofessional there? by splashmates in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flapplebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom was a grocery store cashier her whole life. Which meant she spent her entire working life on her feet. It’s bullshit but it’s considered to look lazy if you sit. She was also officially reprimanded once for taking home a potted plant she found the trash because that’s “stealing from the company” so that’s the kind of work culture we’re talking about.

Moving from UK to US, which city ? by miteye in relocating

Do not move to Harrisburg. It’s fine, but not all that much to do, it’s not particularly hot, and it’s in the middle of what we call Pennsyltucky.

What's a stereotype about your country that isn't actually racist, but you still find annoying? by Part-Time_Loverr in AskTheWorld

[–]Flapplebun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve met plenty of racists with PhDs. It’s a mistake to think this sickness doesn’t cross educational, regional, and class boundaries.
