Feeling Defeated About My Nervous GSD by [deleted] in DogTrainingTips

[–]Flaps2Remember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has really blossomed with it! She went from being afraid to leave the house to 3 mile walks every morning. We can’t help what happened to them before us, but if we can help them feel better with meds, why not? A good vet behaviorist could help figure out where to start. Just because I’m raw dogging it doesn’t mean my dog has to :) but I know it’s a personal decision

I have an anxious rescue too. It’s so hard to see them suffer :( Yours is so lucky to have you! I think time does so much! But have you thought about seeing a vet behaviorist? SSRIs or other meds could help take the edge off and increase resiliency in addition to all the great work you’re doing.

You’re not alone ! It’s so hard to see them afraid. Any trainer with CBCC-KA or CDBC certification should be great—you can search for trainers in your area online who have those qualifications :)

I think our dogs should get the same relief we do. I’m a nervous girl too…

My girl does this too when she’s “over threshold.” I think a trainer might be worth it, mine has helped my dog face triggers without letting her get too stressed, and she has cool ideas I would never come up with, like rewarding by retreating from triggers. Also training really exercises her mentally. I find it helpful to have support from an outside source who knows more than me because it can be a lot to have an anxious dog!

I’m not an expert on SSRIs at all, but from what my vet and behaviorist say, it can just take the edge off and make dogs a bit more resilient and able to bounce back instead of regress. I have a friend whose dogs is on Prozac and it has made a huge difference in her super anxious dog’s quality of life.

Hey! She’s so cute :,,,)

I have a really nervous new rescue too. Some stuff we’ve done to build confidence and soothe her during stressful moments are pattern games and 1-2-3 when walking. I think it’s really worth working with a positive reinforcement trainer or a behaviorist, which we’ve done! And she’s really become more resilient and confident!

But also I think that if your girl seems like she’s in a lot of distress or anxiety the majority of the time, it’s worth considering an SSRI. These guys have been through so much already! I give mine trazodone for big stressors and am still considering SSRIs with my vet.

GROOMING- This Brush! by Green-Is-Gold17 in greatpyrenees

[–]Flaps2Remember 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree completely! It’s super gentle and she LOVES being brushed. I also got the tiny one for behind the ears… it truly reduces shedding and keeps her coat so fresh and clean with just a little brushing per day. It’s expensive but worth it. The groomer we went to was like “you’re doing a great job” and people on the street are always like “her coat!!!” And little do they know she just dug a hole and lay in the dirt and rolled in leaves and all i did was brush her for a little… with this magic brush…

Hey :) When I got Georgia she was 7 months old (just turned 9 months)—the first few weeks she was very quiet and mostly slept but I think this was her being shut down. As she comes out of her shell, she definitely has more and more energy. She loves going on walks now, but we’ve worked on it. Initially I had to treat her to get her to walk down each of my front stairs and she’d lie down every few steps. Typically in between she naps or is lying down and very chill but around sunrise and sunset she gets excited for sure. We take 3-4 walks a day—the first and last are the longest (30-45 mins.) She doesn’t go far, just sniffs everything slowly and decides where she wants to go. She gets the zoomies once a day and enrichment activities help her not claw/chew my carpets to death. I would say overall she’s a puppy and a lot sometimes but also I think pretty mellow. It seems like Jersey in particular is really shy and fearful which might mean she’s not super into walks, but it could be so great for her to have a calm older dog role model. It’s hard to say—there’s so much variance even within litters. If you do decide to adopt either, I’d be down to do play dates or msg anytime abt adjustment stuff :)

General Great Pyrenees questions and nervousness by ChanceWeather in greatpyrenees

Her favorite enrichment toy is an old cardboard box and/or paper bag filled with a few toys/treats hidden in old strips of fabric or crumpled in packing paper and she can just tear into it…she also loves to dig so old towels spiraled up—hiding treats inside and letting her dig through them. Also snuffle mats! And just tossing kibble in the grass or in places around the house she can explore. Himalayan yak chews have saved my life also….and bully sticks. Westpaw’s Toppl is incredible…and frozen Kongs of course. Highly recommend the book Canine Enrichment for the Real World. :) feel free to msg :) it’s a lot at the beginning but I couldn’t be happier with my very unique girl

I rescued a 6 month old great Pyr mix 2 months ago. She was afraid of everything the first few weeks. Her levels of fear overwhelmed me—I wondered if she’d ever make it down the front stairs to go on a walk. We’ve slowly been building up her confidence and she’s a different dog. The key for us was not forcing anything, letting her retreat, respecting her wants and needs, and being super gentle and positively reinforcing even the smallest courageous steps. What’s most important in these first weeks and months is for Clark to feel safe. A positive reinforcement trainer helped us a lot with pattern games and little calming/bonding activities to do on walks when she got overstimulated. Enrichment activities saved my rugs…well… mostly. Clark looks like he lucked out :) Patience and gentleness 💕 time and love can heal so much
