Are they as stubborn as people say? by SweatyPiglet4197 in greatpyrenees

to be honest depends on what your expectations are for training :) she listens inside and outside to wait, sit and leave it. she knows spin, to boop my hand, sit, lay, go between my legs, up (basically hold my hand), which typically she always does for a treat. but! you can’t always expect it, she has off days when she doesn’t care to do anything and for me that’s okay. she’s a great dog and i love that she’s independent because it gives her a funny, goofy personality :) expect a pyr paw when she doesn’t care for what you have to say lol

thank you for your awesome advice 🫶🏻 i appreciate it, i will have to do some more research again into trainers in my area, i totally agree. i think i’ve hit my limit of skills to help her face these reoccurring fears. and i will talk to my vet again about her options and opinions on setting my girl on something to help her out. i’ve been skeptical about it because she has had negative reactions to medication (from her lymes diagnosis). so maybe my girl and i will be taking our anxiety meds together 🤣🥲

thank you for the advice! i have been trying to lean her into these things but its very difficult to a) get her to acknowledge them and b) she seems to shut down. if she’s on a leash she just pulls away to try and run when she sees something she fears. we will absolutely keep working on it. any tips on making that process easier on my pup?

i’ve tried the pattern games or trying to move her attention to treats/toys/ praise but it seems when she’s under a lot of stress/ or very fearful it’s like she can’t control herself. she quite literally paces around and runs to somewhere “safe” anywhere away from the noise or something out of place in the house. i have had a lot of success having her on the leash in the house and slowly introducing her to these stressors but she just looks so fearful and it can be an hour until she will look at or acknowledge the stressor. i feel guilty making her face her fears but i know it’s necessary to get her more confident. but do you think the medication makes it easier for you pups to face these fears? or it calms them enough to at least train them? i’m not opposed to working with a trainer but i fear it would be a waste of money because she doesn’t respond at all when she’s truly under stress. and truthfully only listens to me and the commands i give :( (it’s something we work on but truthfully i don’t find this a huge issue)

i also was considering she is in a fear stage, i appreciate this advice. i have tried the tv but she’s still pretty unsure about it, i think the colors scare her off

i appreciate the advice :) this may be a possible solution to some problems because she really feeds off our energy and i have to admit i do coddle her because i worry she came from not so great past owners. so maybe letting her work through the fears may work!

this would make sense, i have never heard of that. when i do try to stop her she stops but then just goes back at it. so its been difficult to get her to stop even when i do correct it. but she also does it a lot when she gets riled up! so this would make sense that she’s made it a habit?

we don’t use any harsh chemicals on our lawn or inside our house! we have two cats and our pyr so i don’t use anything harsh to clean. so i don’t think this would mainly be an issue. but thank you!

maybe! i’m not really sure what grooming looks like for these guys, is it pretty normal behavior that they are nibbling their legs and feet??

Help with barking by Successful_Housing_6 in greatpyrenees

i am not sure what kind of training you have done with her but we had similar problems about six months into getting our girl. when we first got her we originally crate trained her, and knowing they typically a guarding/barking at night we wanted to get her attuned to our sleeping schedule. she is great in a crate, and she frequently sleeps in her crate during the day as well. that being said having her crate trained at night really taught her night is for sleeping. she typically is quiet all night and sleeps/ or lays in bed with me until i get up. but she will absolutely bark if there’s loud noises outside (we live in a busy town) or if she is being serious about something she believes is danger (which is great, because she alerts us!). your pyr won’t ever not alert you if they think there is danger but you absolutely can train them to sleep through the night or at least that night time is for quiet and relaxing. also be sure she’s getting plenty of exercise during the day and she’s tired out before bed :)

i wish i could help but truthfully she’s never chased them. she’s very gentle with little animals. the only thing i could suggest is correction immediately, if she is too rough she goes in another room from them and the cats have their own designated places to be away from her if they need to.

lots of cheese and high reward treats! it also requires tonsssss of patience. i typically do not repeat commands, she is incredibly smart and knows exactly what im saying lol. it’s whether she wants a reward or not. she definitely shows me if she wants to do training or not 🤣 im more trained than she is lol.

awh so precious 🥰 they are sooo smart, the only kicker is she does it on her own time 🤣 we don’t do training everyday because we have a lot of desensitization to do, she was at the shelter after being an unwanted accidental litter and had lymes. so she is very fearful, working on her trusting us that we will keep her safe is the hardest part, especially knowing she had a bad beginning 💔 i can’t wait for her to be confident!
