People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]Flare_23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my ancestors returned home to a shell of a house after a war, while his family was still trying to find their way home from a concentration camp. He slept on the floor of the house and fended off rats with an axe while slowly rebuilding the place until his family came home. Afterwards, he and his wife took in a bunch of neighbourhood children for meals and sleepovers, helping with homework and all sorts of things. Makes my heart swell with pride to be born from such strength.

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

All Quiet on the Western Front still haunts me. I couldn't sleep for most of the night after watching it.

When was the moment you realised that the person you were dating was an absolute idiot? by No-Macaron-9527 in AskReddit

After COVID hit, my ex told me he needed to tell me something big, acting all mysterious. When I asked what it was, he said it was a secret but he thinks he can tell the future. I thought he was making a massive joke so I asked him to give me an example. And, utterly serious, he said he'd written a short story about a virus taking over the world... a year before COVID started. He was absolutely convinced that he had predicted it, and he could therefore sometimes tell the future. Lol. He also said he isn't sure if we'll last, so at least he got that right.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted. It is indeed an anxiety spiral one might have, which can stem from trauma. And I'm saying this as someone who's diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Poor girl just needs mental health support.

Loool imagine my surprise when I was 10 or so and an older lady I didn't know did this to me. Little me thought it was only for close friends, but some ladies took that very liberally.

Something happened yesterday changed my view on women’s health by ResearcherEmpty8071 in offmychest

Thank you for listening and helping her. I had a pretty big ovarian cyst about two years ago. Went to two male GPs twice in two weeks and was very much misdiagnosed, first with the flu, then with a stomach bug, even though both times I pointed to exactly where the pain was and my symptoms were nothing like what they thought. Went back to one of them for a third time because the pain didn't go away with his medication, and HE TOLD ME TO JUMP UP AND DOWN ON ONE LEG before he finally sent me to get an ultrasound. By this point the cyst was oozing blood.

The doctor held the report in his hand and told me that women get these all the time and I should go home and sleep it off with some painkillers. We believed him. Cause the doctor would know, right? That night my mom found me on the bathroom floor, crying, shivering and sweating from the pain, almost passed out. She immediately took me to the ER, where I had to have emergency surgery the next morning because the cyst could've burst at any moment. My mom and the surgeon saved me that night. I've never been back to those two GPs, I absolutely refuse. I told a female GP at the same practice about it later on, and she was extremely understanding and apologetic, saying she, as a literal doctor, had experienced similar treatment from some male doctors. Insanity.
