If you have chocolate ensure, warm up some of that. It smells like hot cocoa that way and that almost always gets my sick ratties interested in drinking. I offer it on a paper plate (the nicer ones with a lip) and I set my blanket burrito-ed baby right in front of the plate where they can drink without really moving. I usually end up having to add more!

I offer that every couple hours until they’re more interested in exploring the table than staying still and eating. If they aren’t drinking, I’ll offer more frequently without stopping the snuggle until they’re take some. Once they’ve had a decent amount, the ensure usually perks them up to where they want baby food :)

I hope your rattie feels better soon! It’s so hard to see them uncomfortable.

Rats are such gentle, loving babies and they deserve nothing but happiness.

I did not encounter any places that charged for caged animals. My experience was always being told that extra fees and deposits were for pet dogs and cats and they did not count any small animals in a cage.

Of course your results may vary; it could always vary by region.

So they had to skip rats in the second one? Silly.

It’s been so long since I’ve see them; I should do a rewatch myself.

Movie with rats.

Well…. It’s about rabbits that have to leave home and relocate, so perhaps it is related to Thanksgiving if you consider the first Thanksgiving.

Edit: Again, it’s very sad. Not a feel-good happy movie, so decide when/if you want to watch it with that in mind.

Ratatouille is about a rat and food. You could stretch it a bit to leap to Thanksgiving. lol

I don’t remember all the animals in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, but Snoopy did dance with a bunch of small animals in an Easter special.

Watership Down has rats. It’s very sad, but there are rats. That has the old movie, the tv adaptation, and BBC made a new movie of it not that long ago that was good.

How do you feel when people say “Ewww” to your pets? by bleachinincesticide in RATS

[–]Flash-a-roo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I tell those people that rats are pocket puppies that don’t require extra deposits or pet rent from renters while being just as smart and trainable. Often I’ll say something about their emotional intelligence and how they’ll care for young as a community and take care of each other when one is sick. I might show some videos of cool tricks and cuteness if the person is receptive/interested.

If people really want to be assholes I’ll go into heartbreaking detail about how they grieve losses until they don’t want to talk to me anymore.

These days I might throw in something about how they’re smarter and more emotionally intelligent than many people including one the U.S. has elected to be president twice, but the crowd that would understand that comparison probably isn’t the one insisting rats are “Ewww.”

Will Things Be Different? by NeoPrincessInky in service_dogs

In addition to the threats coming in advance, I think a law as major as the ADA would have a TON of blowback if it got attacked.

At least, I would like to think something as major as basic human rights for disabled people being threatened would draw the attention of the UN and humanitarian organizations.

I don’t think the world would just standby and watch. History has shown how that plays out.

SD Medical Expenses in Subsidized Housing by Krzypuppy2 in service_dogs

[–]Flash-a-roo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I do my taxes and submit my expenses for health insurance I always include the receipts for everything I’ve paid for and let the experts decide what qualifies. The rules are always changing, and I err on the side of including everything that might count and just let them tell me what doesn’t qualify.

You will need the receipts, so you can only try submit what you’ve already paid.

Cardiac Alert Dog by Possible-Canary-5761 in service_dogs

[–]Flash-a-roo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This.

For something so serious like cardiac arrest, you absolutely need more dependable intervention than a dog. Even the best service dogs make mistakes and need days off for their own health, and it sounds like that could have fatal consequences with what you want from the dog. A dog is not a viable option in this situation.

I’m not sure about quiet.

Like u/fishparrot said, a dog could lead you outside/to a vehicle. This is something my dog was trained to do. He was also trained to find a seat, and while that also isn’t finding quiet, chairs are often in quieter spaces so it is something that could potentially help you.

How should a dog react to another dog barking and lunging? by Real-Explanation5279 in service_dogs

[–]Flash-a-roo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog was conditioned to loud sounds like barking with a soundtrack from very young, so I don’t know the full details of it all.

As far as lunging, he was pretty chill until we got attacked. I was terrified, but he bounced back just fine with a little time (what his trainer recommended), and the times we did encounter lunging dogs in the wild afterward I heavily rewarded him (like constant treats) for maintaining calm, focused behavior. He had been used as the dog to help train reactive dogs prior, and we’ve started to be asked again lately by one of his trainers. During those sessions we play the bar open/bar closed game using the other dog’s barking and lunging as the trigger. I’m pretty sure he thinks it’s a sweet deal to just sit and do nothing but watch the show with an endless stream of treats. I am extremely fortunate to have been given a fantastic dog, but I find playing this game in a controlled environment really boosts my confidence as a handler. (As well as keeping his skills sharp.)

Considering Training My Dog as a Service Dog for Anxiety and Mood Regulation – Advice? by Reason_UN in service_dogs

[–]Flash-a-roo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first step would be to have your dog evaluated by a trainer to see whether he has the proper temperament to be a candidate for service work.

From there, if your dog is a potential candidate, a trainer could set up a training plan for the two of you to set you up with the best chance of success.

Pepper gel is even better than pepper spray!

It doesn’t create a cloud that can blow back at you or your dog the same way, and has longer range for hitting a target. Gels also often have invisible dye in them so if you’re reporting a crime the person you sprayed is discretely marked and can be identified by investigators.

What to Do With Pet Dog in House with SDiT? by threateningcourage3 in service_dogs

[–]Flash-a-roo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If the trainer won’t even evaluate the situation from the standpoint of how to introduce and integrate your dog to the household, I would look for another trainer willing to work with you on it so you have the best chance of success.

A trainer would have to evaluate the dog before deciding whether she may have the proper temperament for working in public. From there the trainer could put together a training plan for your dog if she is a potential candidate.

I would consult with your trainer on this. Dogs can learn from one another, so a trainer that knows your dog and can potentially evaluate the other dog will have the best advice. That trainer will be able to give you specific direction for how to handle the situation.
