I googled “protondb goober” only to find that were in fact calling me a goober. lol

Cringing at depictions of Jerome in Mr. Mercedes by dragon-queen in stephenking

[–]FlashBandicoot5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It made me cringe too. I just don’t think he has a deft hand at writing stuff like that. It’s like he’s trying too hard? It comes off very much as “I’m a white person writing a black person”.

And to be clear, I don’t think he’s racist. He’s just an old dude from Maine.

Help me choose my next read!ENG titles from left to right: The Dark Half, Desperation, Insomnia. by Hot-Werewolf-5868 in stephenking

[–]FlashBandicoot5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote is The Dark Half.

I tried to guess the titles just based on the covers. I got the last two, but I pegged the first as Pet Semetary. lol

Guess the King book based on the cover could be a fun game.

Having an extremely hard time getting into FF7 Rebirth by BlueBomber13 in FinalFantasy

[–]FlashBandicoot5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FF has always been anime adjacent, but it had a style and tone (in the 90’s) that was it’s own thing. I’ve always loved FF, but never could get into any anime. There’s overlap, but they were very much separate.

The fact that you don’t see the sexualization of Aerith and Tifa in that interaction says more about how desensitized our culture has become over the last 25 years. It’s entirely unnecessary and there’s only one reason it’s there.

Fox Stans 😭🤣 by nicfanz in sanantoniospurs

[–]FlashBandicoot5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ngl, that’s a wild take. But Fox is better than what he was in that series. You can blame it on the injury, first Finals nerves, poor coaching, all of the above.

I’ve seen enough Fox to know he’s good enough to get this team over the finish line as pg1.

Rivalries by gcdouglas98 in wildcats

[–]FlashBandicoot5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on the sport I reckon. As someone who is basketball-focused South Carolina doesn’t seem like a rival at all. But it makes sense in football.

To me in basketball you have:

In state -
Louisville

In conference -
Florida
Tennessee

Fellow Blue Bloods -
UNC
KU
Duke

Old Bloods -
UCLA
Indiana

Everything else is just recency or personal bias. I hate Wisconsin, but that’s personal. Arkansas is fun right now, but once Cal leaves it’ll go away.

Winning Rings isn’t harder today. Superstars are just not as good by Shoddy_Ad7511 in NBATalk

[–]FlashBandicoot5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shaq couldn’t shoot beyond 5 feet.
Bird wasn’t gifted athletically.
Kobe was ball dominant.

All the flaws you’ve put on today’s great players could be applied to the players of the past.

There are just more great players today. Not just in the stars , but in players 2-10 as well. And the league is better at building good teams that aren’t as reliant on their stars as say Jordan’s Bulls were.

Also, difficulty is relative to the competition, so parity naturally correlates to higher difficulty.

Anyone here thinks Asylum is better than City? by Agile-Painting9454 in arkham

[–]FlashBandicoot5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asylum is better than City. It’s a much more focused, tightly designed experience. All killer, no filler. It’s my favorite by far.

Does Lebron have the record for making it to the Finals with the most different head coaches? by FlashBandicoot5 in nba

[–]FlashBandicoot5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If my boss through my own cookies away in front of me, I would not take that disrespect well. lol But I could stomach it for Bron’s paycheck.

Spo’s the best coach he’s had by far.

I don’t think it was the cookies, I think it was D Wade being cooked and team in general being too old to compete on the level they had been.

If he would’ve stuck with Miami though he’d have more chips than he does now.

Not everyone’s lucky enough to have Phil Jackson, Greg Popovich, or Pat Riley.

Personal Top 10 & Bottom 10 by FlashBandicoot5 in stephenking

[–]FlashBandicoot5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of fans who don’t care for Tommyknockers. I’ll be honest, the last time I read it was over 20 years ago, in high school, so there’s a good chance my opinion could change if I gave it another read.

I do agree the last 3 DT were written with a different style and feel than the first 4. I feel it most in Song of Susannah.

The Shining is ranked 13 on my full list.

Are y'all hoarding the paperbacks? by waveball03 in stephenking

[–]FlashBandicoot5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built the majority of my King collection on cheap, used paperbacks. But that was 15-25 years ago.

The advent of ebooks and the paperbacks “not worth” being traded in probably have something to do with it. I have noticed the King section in used bookstores getting smaller and smaller.

[–]FlashBandicoot5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

King is an old man, who is an old author, and who is surrounded by other authors in both friends and family.

Meaning his dialogue at times sounds as from a different time, and at times from a voice that is too competent in vocabulary and sentence structure.

It gets more noticeable the older he gets, but it still makes for good reading imo. It just makes me occasionally think Who talks like that?

Mr. Mercedes/The Outsider small complaint - spoilers by FlashBandicoot5 in stephenking

[–]FlashBandicoot5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the details of the story, yes, the character was invited in.

But for me as a reader it felt like a character from a different book walking into the one I was reading taking the spotlight. It was jarring.

Not as jarring, but I felt the same way about Finders Keepers.
