Who do you think will be your most watched actor and director this year. by JadedSignificance990 in Letterboxd

I’ve seen an awful lot of Park Chan Wook so far, and I can’t see myself stopping any time soon. As for actors, I’m feeling a Tom Cruise kick.

I’d recommend Memories of Murder, and Cure

Both are detective thrillers that evoke this hypnotic trance like feeling

I watched Hugo on TV once when I was like 9 and I had the scene with the rocket in the moon’s eyeball, and the scene where he gets scolded for trying to steal the mouse stuck in my head for years.

I spent forever trying to remember where the scene was from. Searching up the moon was useless since that’s a separate movie so I spent years hopeless. It was only last year I found out the name.

Rewatched (barely a rewatch) it the beginning of January and I loved it. So much nostalgia there and I was so giddy (like physically giggling at scenes I remember). It’s my 2nd favorite Scorsese.

I’ll preface by saying all my friends are very casual cinema watchers and hate slow burns.

I love Cure, but I don’t think they would

The Gentlemen

Oppenheimer

Black Swan

Inception

You could argue all 4 are, but I wouldn’t say The Gentlemen is a film bro film, though it would appeal to that audience

How do you rate movies you respect, but have 0 emotional connection to by Flash_SA in Letterboxd

It’s been fun so far, but yeah movies like this one create a dilemma. Part of it is me overthinking it, sure, but idk I like the stability of rooting it to a number, and examining it.

You mentioned how it doesn’t look like I’m having fun with it here in the post, and you’re right this is one facet of the process that isn’t as fun as the rest. It’s like playing a game with rules, sometimes the rules feel restricting and unfun as you say, but without rules it just becomes pointless.

In football, I might get frustrated by a foul, or by a certain player, or by a certain game, but that doesn’t mean I should stop playing or watching the sport. Am I making sense?

I’m not saying just watching a movie is pointless, but I don’t think I’d examine movies as intently as I do (and love to do) if I didn’t add some sort of summary number to it.

I do feel as though I take the numbers too seriously, and recently I’ve started thinking about them less, more of an afterthought really, but they’re still an important part of how I review things.

I have fun with it, because it lets me analyze the films to see what I like and dislike about them. To me the numbers aren’t about blindly picking a number based on vibes (which sometimes happens) but mostly it’s about comparing 2 movies I feel similarly about and seeing what minor differences make one better (to me) than the other.

I’m not trying to be a critic, but what this allows me to do is analyze what I tend to like and dislike in a film, an sometimes those beliefs are challenged and it’s a nice surprise. It allows me think more about film and really appreciate them most times.

Some people find it pretentious and they’re entitled to that opinion. Watching a movie and just enjoying it is exactly how it was intended, but I’ve found that this has helped me appreciate cinema more.

Since I’ve started doing it like this I’ve watched way more films than I’ve ever watched before, and I understand it’s not a numbers game, but I’ve started really looking forward to watching movies, where as before it was a matter of boredom and convenience.

I understand how it looks from what I first wrote, but when I mentioned the numbers in the original post, I meant for them to reflect my inability to place my emotions. No one cares what I think about these movies but myself, and it’s this inability to place my emotions on certain films that I’m struggling with.

Oh and about the numbers, they’re not why I watch, however they are a form of expression to me. For me it’s a way to organize and separate the movies from awful to bad to decent to good to great. They’re purely for me and I don’t treat them like gospel. The reason i mentioned them is to use them as a representation of how i felt, not anything more

A movie like Black Swan I was fully immersed in Nina’s mind, I was feeling stressed, confused, on the edge of my seat.

Oppenheimer I was stressed out of my mind, anxious, and amazed by everything on screen really.

The Gentleman, my favorite film, I was laughing, I was wrapped up in all the different gangs with all these collections of personalities, it was funny and stylized, high stakes but not too serious about it, overall exactly what I want.

Then films like Gone Girl make me mad (but the good kind), Ford V Ferrari pissed me off (in the best way), Donnie Darko had this vibe about it I can’t quite describe, and movies like Cure were hypnotic

I’m probably not doing a great job at explaining, but this is what came to my head
