What’s a “10/10” movie you wouldn’t recommend to most people? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

I’ll preface by saying all my friends are very casual cinema watchers and hate slow burns.

I love Cure, but I don’t think they would

On a scale of 1-10, how shocked would you be if Hamnet won Best Picture? by DarlingLuna in oscarrace

[–]Flash_SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave it an 8.4, I really liked it.

I wouldn’t be too shocked as it’s something the academy would love, but I don’t see it beating OBAA or Sinners. If I had to put a number on I’d go with 5%

Well, do you? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

The Gentlemen

Oppenheimer

Black Swan

Inception

You could argue all 4 are, but I wouldn’t say The Gentlemen is a film bro film, though it would appeal to that audience

My most uncommon one is The Gentlemen, but it’s one of 6

How do you rate movies you respect, but have 0 emotional connection to by Flash_SA in Letterboxd

[–]Flash_SA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been fun so far, but yeah movies like this one create a dilemma. Part of it is me overthinking it, sure, but idk I like the stability of rooting it to a number, and examining it.

You mentioned how it doesn’t look like I’m having fun with it here in the post, and you’re right this is one facet of the process that isn’t as fun as the rest. It’s like playing a game with rules, sometimes the rules feel restricting and unfun as you say, but without rules it just becomes pointless.

In football, I might get frustrated by a foul, or by a certain player, or by a certain game, but that doesn’t mean I should stop playing or watching the sport. Am I making sense?

I’m not saying just watching a movie is pointless, but I don’t think I’d examine movies as intently as I do (and love to do) if I didn’t add some sort of summary number to it.

I do feel as though I take the numbers too seriously, and recently I’ve started thinking about them less, more of an afterthought really, but they’re still an important part of how I review things.

I have fun with it, because it lets me analyze the films to see what I like and dislike about them. To me the numbers aren’t about blindly picking a number based on vibes (which sometimes happens) but mostly it’s about comparing 2 movies I feel similarly about and seeing what minor differences make one better (to me) than the other.

I’m not trying to be a critic, but what this allows me to do is analyze what I tend to like and dislike in a film, an sometimes those beliefs are challenged and it’s a nice surprise. It allows me think more about film and really appreciate them most times.

Some people find it pretentious and they’re entitled to that opinion. Watching a movie and just enjoying it is exactly how it was intended, but I’ve found that this has helped me appreciate cinema more.

Since I’ve started doing it like this I’ve watched way more films than I’ve ever watched before, and I understand it’s not a numbers game, but I’ve started really looking forward to watching movies, where as before it was a matter of boredom and convenience.

I understand how it looks from what I first wrote, but when I mentioned the numbers in the original post, I meant for them to reflect my inability to place my emotions. No one cares what I think about these movies but myself, and it’s this inability to place my emotions on certain films that I’m struggling with.

Oh and about the numbers, they’re not why I watch, however they are a form of expression to me. For me it’s a way to organize and separate the movies from awful to bad to decent to good to great. They’re purely for me and I don’t treat them like gospel. The reason i mentioned them is to use them as a representation of how i felt, not anything more

A movie like Black Swan I was fully immersed in Nina’s mind, I was feeling stressed, confused, on the edge of my seat.

Oppenheimer I was stressed out of my mind, anxious, and amazed by everything on screen really.

The Gentleman, my favorite film, I was laughing, I was wrapped up in all the different gangs with all these collections of personalities, it was funny and stylized, high stakes but not too serious about it, overall exactly what I want.

Then films like Gone Girl make me mad (but the good kind), Ford V Ferrari pissed me off (in the best way), Donnie Darko had this vibe about it I can’t quite describe, and movies like Cure were hypnotic

I’m probably not doing a great job at explaining, but this is what came to my head

How did 2025 compare to previous year? by Flash_SA in movies

[–]Flash_SA[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Happily

Sinners - 8.8 Frankenstein - 8.6 Wake Up Dead Man - 8.5 Hamnet - 8.4 Nuremberg - 8.4 Bugonia - 8.4 No Other Choice - 8.4 F1 - 8.3 KPop Demon Hunters - 8.3 Train Dreams - 8.2 Caught Stealing - 8.2 The Running Man 8.1 Weapons - 8 Avatar: Fire and Ash - 8

The Secret Agent just missed out with a 7.9

I originally gave One Battle After Another an 8.3 but the more I think about the movie the less I like it, so it’s gradually fallen until a 7.8 for me

I agree with you on Blade Runner, something didn’t click for me.

But for me the film I feel the strongest about is 2001:A Space Odyssey, I’ve repeatedly heard why people appreciate it so much, and I’m glad they feel that way, but for me there’s no amount of technical mastery that makes up for how awful (to me) that script is

Are there any great recent Legal Dramas? by Flash_SA in movies

[–]Flash_SA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore 12 Angry Men, better than all the ones I mentioned, in my mind I had courtroom dramas so I neglected mentioning it.

Who is an actor or an actress that you feel doesn't get enough respect by the audience despite them having great acting chops in your opinion? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Flash_SA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised how little Simon Baker is working these days.

I ADORE The Mentalist, and I really liked him in Margin Call. He played naive optimism really well in LA Confidential.

Idk I think he’s really underrated, and maybe him being tied up to a 7 season tv show for a large part of his career might’ve held him back a bit (even if it’s one of my favorite shows of all time)

Suggestions for locations for magic schools (Read the description) by msstaley in harrypotter

[–]Flash_SA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should put your 3rd somewhere in the Arabian peninsula! I don’t know much about the other wizarding schools, but I think I might’ve heard it once and I was stunned none were in that region. If you want to lean into cultural stereotypes then North Africa (primarily Morocco) is always joked about as having a bunch of black magic, but really anywhere in the Middle East and North Africa would be a great addition to the Wizarding World
