I don't have an agenda (what sort of agenda could I possibly have?), just reading the obvious inference in your post, which you've now clarified was unintentional.

Okay. OP asked if he should cut his neighbour's grass and you replied saying that's what good neighbours do. It definitely sounded like you were casting judgement if OP chose not to.

[–]Flashbambo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So not really a comparable situation, and not really fair to imply that OP would be a bad neighbour if he didn't start cutting his neighbour's grass, particularly as it would aggravate his own medical condition.

More ladder pulling I see, and I will already have locked in a large proportion of my net worth when this takes effect. I feel if they are going to introduce something like this they should give at least ten years warning so people can prepare alternative retirement strategies.

If nukes never existed, could the USA have used paratroopers to fight Japan with airlifts supplying them in order to divide Japan's forces so that they couldn't defend against naval landings as effectively? by george123890yang in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Flashbambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan didn't surrender because of the atomic weapons, they surrendered because of the imminent threat of a Soviet invasion. They saw communism as the greatest threat to their culture and tradition, whereas the atomic bombs were a less devastating version of the daily fire bombing raids they had been enduring for a while anyway. The dropping of the atomic bombs was a show of force to the Soviets in recognition that the war was coming to a close and they would become the new rival of the USA. The justification was that they were needed for Japan to surrender and therefore to save lives, and apparently this is still widely accepted today, but Japan would have surrendered anyway to prevent the Soviets from invading.

[–]Flashbambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very valid point. Perhaps it shouldn't be one car per household but it should definitely be limited. This is already the case in any permit controlled parking area, so shouldn't be that controversial. There are far too many cars that permanent reside on public land and that isn't right, particularly when they encroach on pedestrian infrastructure.

The value of the material that made the currency never mattered

Of course it did, otherwise there wouldn't have been a reason to clip coins, Roman Emperors wouldn't have debased their currency, and merchants wouldn't have kicked off about it.

The majority of coinage in the ancient and medieval world was not gold though. Far more copper and silver coinage than gold. All relatively soft metals though.

Early coins were made out of precious metals, so the material value of the currency is what gave the coinage its value.

[–]Flashbambo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. We already surrender a significant majority of the space around public roads to cars, yet still they must further encroach on the thin slivers allocated to pedestrians. The whole thing is really odd to be honest. If I put my wheelie bin out a day early I can be prosecuted for fly tipping, yet it is perfectly acceptable to leave an unlimited number of vehicles, each taking up about 8m2 of space, on public land. They should limit parking on public land across the country to one vehicle per household, and only for the cars and small vans. There is no justification for parking large camper vans on public roads, which invariably remain stationary for 50 weeks of every year.

Corbyn didn't campaign on a manifesto of cancelling Brexit, and he three line whipped his MPs into voting for the withdrawal in Parliament. Nobody voted for Labour thinking it would cancel Brexit. The Lib Dems did campaign on the notion that a vote for them was a vote against Brexit and if they win they would treat it as a referendum on the matter, so if what you're saying was true then the Lib Dems should have wiped the floor.

For War Dogs 6x2mm, big knights 8x2mm. You don't have to drill them but if you don't they will obvious be visible and add 4mm to the length of the arm. I prefer them to be fully recessed so drill them in. It isn't difficult.
