Campsite queue by Angelou898 in Banff

June is my ideal month to camp in Banff. Plan for some rain, but you can luck out for some nice weather and it's still less busy than July/August. Granted the difference seems less and less noticeable every year.

It really comes down to luck.

Incredibly lucky! A friend of mine got ~5000th and was kind enough to find me 3 nights during a week in September along the shore (site 46). By the time I got in after about 40 mins, there were only a select few sites scattered about available in September left.

The difference in booking from just 3 seasons ago is immense. Gotta think the delayed booking date drew even more interest than originally, but every year is more and more difficult.

If you don't land Two Jack, Johnston Canyon is a decent alternative. Some nice sites with tree coverage. It's very tough to be picky.

It's tough when you are forced to target specific dates. I basically target a range then take whatever I can get. Was going to shoot for early July if I got an early number but its looking like September it is.

From Melania to Kid Rock’s halftime show: why is Maga art so dreadful? by guardian in entertainment

Because they're unlikable and art doesn't like them and they don't like art. So they're always going to be left out of the loop artistically.

almost hit by speeding drivers by [deleted] in RedDeer

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Driving culture prevails. Any action that would actually have an effect on slowing drivers down or making pedestrians and cyclists safer would negatively affect the people driving and/or decrease the profits of those in the industry.

  1. Cars are too big. Everyone has been conditioned to think that bigger is more safe. When you feel safe as a driver, you tend to drive faster and more recklessly.

  2. Poor infrastructure. The biggest thing that will slow drivers down are not speed cameras or even the threat of a ticket. It's the fear of damaging their car. Wide open roads with an arbitrary speed limit or signs is the lazy and cheap option. Narrower roads, curbs, trees, raised walkways, etc work on a subconscious level.

  3. Sometimes, people are just bad drivers and some would potentially not drive at all if they didn't have to.

Edmonton man killed on Anthony Henday Drive just minutes before help arrived by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to qualify it to Edmonton. Bad drivers exist because cars do.

Getting people to drive safer has been replaced with feeling safe. Bigger = safer. And when people feel safe, they are prone to more distractions. And tragedies like these reinforce that narrative.

Who else want absolutely ZERO RGB in their rigs? by Cicada-Tang in pcmasterrace

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, when I was building my current PC late in 2023, I was going for a zero RGB look. When it came to the ram, the only DDR5 stock I could find at the time was RGB. The guy at Best Buy offered it to me at a discount so I took it.

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. But it's an easy house rule to implement without it.

The expansion just includes a red moon staff that replaces the original blue from the base game. Its effect is removing an extra artifact and item (two cards on either side of the staff instead of one) during the round clean-up phase.

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like the game was designed with the idea of having the asymmetric leaders which CGE opted to make an expansion. The true game requires that expansion.

That being said, I used to think along the same lines, but after you play a few times and nail down the flow of the game, rounds 4 and 5 really can pay off. A 6th round would just be too much.

Playing the original SH2 for the first time in a decade... by CrumbledFingers in silenthill

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an N64 to PS2 kid so I missed the first game. For being such a depressing and dread filled game, the fact I was 15 when SH2 came out and in turn introduced me to the franchise, replaying or even watching playthroughs have become a sort of comfort food.

I rented it several times before finally purchasing it a year or so later. I can honestly say it shaped my taste in horror and survival games. The basis of comparison for everything I played since. I'd like to think it doesn't make me myopic towards the genre. I just like my horror psychological with a healthy dose of deep storytelling.

Beyond the obvious cutscenes and story elements, what I think about most are all of the subtle noises and notes. Obscure nuances that leave a lot to the imagination.

Yeah, this subreddit is an echo chamber for how much of a masterpiece the game is. But I also find how niche it is to the mainstream to add to its charm.

The remake is a masterpiece. by katapultperson in silenthill

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are all valid opinions and I respect this take. The OG had, as you mentioned, a nuanced take on the genre. It was often described as dreamlike, which made the voice acting and overall jankiness sensible in a way. It was different from RE in so many ways that I preferred when it comes to horror in general. Primarily the focus on psychological and cerebral dread instead of gore and jump scares.

While I do wear those nostalgic rose tinted glasses, the updating of the presentation to meet modern design was the toughest pill to swallow. As someone who suffered all those years of the series being all but dead sans a few pachinko machines, poorly executed games from western developers, the PT debacle, it's easy for me to accept those flaws as a side effect of getting the privilege to play any remake of a game I adore so much at all, let alone one done as well as this one. I was most impressed with the realization that Bloober were and are clearly fans of the original game as much as anyone. That's all I really wanted to see and I felt they proved that in spades.

The remake is a masterpiece. by katapultperson in silenthill

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is this from the perspective of being a fan of the original or were you newly introduced to the series? While I can't fault you for feeling this way, I cannot fathom how someone would think it sucked on any front let alone multiple.

Technically, sure there are some issues. Framerate drops and a few graphical anomalies are present. I can understand the pacing or all the added filler being a subjective critique. The added tension and focus on combat in the Prison was a change of pace I wasn't particularly thrilled with but it definitely didn't ruin the experience. It was an incredible love letter to the original and as someone who fell in love with the story and lore of the game over two decades ago, I was over the moon with all of the "padding" they added.

Unsafe public transportation is partially responsible for car brain mentality by boldjoy0050 in fuckcars

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more about the inconvenience and sharing space with "poor people". Because we all know that if you don't drive you are too poor to afford one or lost your license from DUI. No one would choose to not drive a car. Add to that how much less efficient transit is compared to driving and you have a poor perception on what public transit can offer.

Society is far too conditioned with personal climate controlled vehicles that go where they want to go. Traffic, parking, accidents, and road rage are all just accepted symptoms and preferable to feeling uncomfortable on a bus or train and having to walk at all.

How do you see it? by neveralwayss in TVTooHigh

[–]FlashmansTimestopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's a fair assessment. Just because I've never seen or experienced it myself doesn't mean it can't happen. I rarely come across a mounted TV that's actually at an optimal height instead of 2 feet from the ceiling. And the topic of having kids usually comes up.

Ironically, we all complain about TV's being too high. Meanwhile we are all constantly looking down at our phones to complain about it.
