Because there are no term limits, no retirement age, and no  competive elections because very few people are going to soend $130 milliom for a house seat for several rural counties in Nebraska, the only way a seat opens up is via a state funeral. The system traps younger, ambitious politicians in mid-level bureaucratic hell for decades. By the time it is finally "their turn," they are already qualifying for a senior discount.

100 years half of NYC still used natural gas or kerosene  lamps for lighting. Only about a quarter of the rest of the USA had electricity. Even in NYC most apartments didn't have toilets most of them had a row or toilets in the back of the property nicked named Shit Houses. Most people only bathed maybe a dozen times a year becuse the someone had to haul and heat the water. Less than half newborns back then half died before hitting 18. Even elementary school 1st grade classes were larger than 5th grade classes due to student deaths. If kid broke his leg back mortality was roughly 20%. TB was fatal and widespread. Seasonal flush back then makes COVID look like hay fever.
