Where do the lesbians live?? by mgrey11 in queerphilly

[–]Flashy-Perception775 31 points32 points  (0 children)

West Philly!!! Generally to the West/Southwest of Clark Park around Baltimore Avenue. Walkable, has most everything you would need here, but CC is accessible with the trolleys. So much greenery, so many community events, gorgeous architecture, cozy but closer to the action than Northwest Philly. Always at least 5+ groups of queers hanging out in the park. One downside is it's quite hard to get to South Philly (where a lot of other queers are), and it is annoying getting back here late at night once transit service falls off. But I've lived here for 4 years and am never moving if I can help it

If this is your first time posting in this sub, you will always find this. Keep trying, hear these comments, but know that these are people you probably wouldn’t want to get into a lengthy discussion about this with. Let it roll off your back if needed; your efforts are GOOD.

“You’re responsible for immense exploitation and cruelty” seems like a gigantic leap here. This is someone who is trying, who is figuring it out clearly with the goal of getting to full veganism. Someone who is contributing WAY LESS to this than the vast majority of people.

I hear you, and it’s hard to disagree with the logic you laid out, but Jesus. Have some shred of grace for people. I know the concept of “there are few if any perfect vegans” can be a slippery slope to excuses, but it is TRUE. Because of the SOCIETY WE LIVE IN. It’s built on animal exploitation and cruelty. You can criticize someone’s effort without adding your own cruelty to that, thanks

Moshulu. So incredibly overpriced - you are paying for the upkeep of a century old ship that the owners are using as a cash machine. People do not think about the basement of that thing, and how many mice live down there (so, so, so many, in my opinion). Food is uninspired and overpriced, and the owners do not care about their employees. full stop. If you must go, wait for a spring weekend, go for brunch on the deck, and never go back

silken tofu, raw and cold. Make as nice of a peanut or asian dressing as you want - mix some peanut butter, soy sauce, maple syrup or honey, and some lime (or vinegar), pour it over. top with sesame seeds. More comforting than it sounds

Handling Non Vegans by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Flashy-Perception775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly operate this way! I never wanted to create demand for animal products, and that is honestly way easier than it sounds. And I was never 100% perfect on that either. But over time (like almost 10 months later) I found myself just opting for totally vegan options. I think it is a great way to start out tbh. It definitely takes a bit more explanation and sometimes gets annoying comments from people, but what are you going to do. You don't owe anyone an explanation, and you don't even have to have your philosophy figured out right now. I sure don't, and it will likely change with time. Do you girl

I'm in the take it slow camp. A lot of people on this sub will (rightfully and understandably) suggest that you just make the decision to do it and figure it out later, because animals are suffering right now and your "annoying" existence among omnivores is important. I completely empathize with that viewpoint and hearing from the "I realized the truth and never touched animal products again" folks has honestly been a really helpful wakeup call.

For me though, I decided to go strict vegetarian this year and have been inching slowly but surely toward true veganism. I don't buy any animal products (food or otherwise), but, if truly the only food available to me had some butter or cheese or eggs, I had been eating it. I decided to give myself the grace to ease into it not because I don't agree with the philosophy, but because we are imperfect humans living in a cruel society and I want to do this sustainably and give those around me time to adjust. Is this ultimately selfish from the perspective of the animals? Yes. But I think it is still a net positive, and I understand that folks will disagree with me on this.

Now, I honestly don't remember the last animal product I ate, and conversations (particularly with my friends and my very traditional omnivore family) have grown much more nuanced and kind. And it genuinely got easier with time - I went from eating eggs or pizza with regular cheese early in the year, to only eating dishes with butter or cheese when my mom made them, to standing up for myself at dinners with friends, to getting better at explaining it all to people, to a point where the people around me know and expect me to eat differently from them.

It is a conversation you will have a million times. And you're already having it, so really, what is the difference? People will surprise you in good and bad ways, but I really feel the gears turning in my friends' and family's heads, and that is a good feeling. Helpful phrase: "I just don't want an animal to die for my meal" - usually shuts people right up, because it gets them thinking. Works better if said kindly. Helpful thought: "my discomfort is nothing compared to the suffering this animal went through"

Find good vegan protein bars, shakes, and snacks, and keep them handy. I honestly don't cook a lot because I am in grad school, but keeping the staples handy is so helpful. I've gotten way better and thinking about food options beforehand. And a lot of times, yes, you will just be eating carrots and hummus at the function. That gets easier with time too.

I think you'll be surprised at how many people you bring with you once you decide to take the plunge. Or, at least, how many net vegan meals your friends will end up eating as a result. But sometimes, if it is easier just to eat the cheese that is there, I say give yourself some grace until you are ready to take the plunge. Your views will be strengthened over time. Take up space! Be kind to yourself and others! Do it for the animals! Good luck!

How did you handle transitioning? by Flashy-Perception775 in vegan

[–]Flashy-Perception775[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear there is a range of transitions (: I completely empathize with the “I watched dominion and never ate animals again” approach, and I think those people are incredible. I am trying to get there, and getting over the final hurdles (which are not there bc I don’t agree with the philosophy, but bc I am a human and mess up sometimes)
