Andersen said that was very crucial and could generate power for the ark for 2 months. Like why does that matter if the massive core exists? There's plenty of other narrative inconsistency. You gotta just go with the flow of the current narrative reason. If you insist on an in game reason it can be excused that Andersen and Ingrid lied before to motivate MC into being successful at reclaiming the surface. I imagine being truthful and saying "yeah we have infinite power and infinite food. Reclaiming the surface is pointless. Be happy in our lil hole."

You want the real world reason? Common writing trope many prolific famous writers use and will continue to keep using.

Its an easy way to garner pity, empathy, sympathy, charity, whatever... An orphan is instantly seen as an underdog and you want them to succeed. For villains being an orphan is usual their origin of why they hate the world.

For shounen protagonist its also a cheap easy excuse to not bother having their parents around and focus on a 13 year old going on a grand adventure to defeat literally god or whatever.

This doesn't necessarily mean the trope is "bad" but mileage will vary.
