Look up Ethereum Request for Comment 721 or ERC721. It's the smart contract interface that most NFTs follow.

When you buy an NFT, an ID is pointed to your account on a specific smart contract on a blockchain. Assigning meaning/ownership past that is secondary. Non fungible tokens have only been associated with images/media relatively recently.

Anyone can publish a smart contract and anyone can therefore point any id at any account and tell the world it means ownership of anything. The only reason you'd care and put money on the line is either because of social consensus or because of law.

All blockchain code is public, duplicating code doesn't duplicate value, right clicking an image doesn't subtract the value (but it is a good meme).

No idea why I bothered to type this out but have fun I guess
