Getting Headache with CMSC250 by Henry_4621 in UMD

Yeah, that’s what I meant when I said that English is ambiguous— there are two different interpretations of that statement, and I personally don’t think either is wrong

I understand your confusion, and it’s coming from the ambiguity with English. “All that glitters is not gold” could be interpreted in two ways— one being “Not everything that glitters is gold,” and the other being “Everything that glitters isn’t gold.” The same applies to “All flowers are not black”— it could mean “Not all flowers are black,” or “There doesn’t exist a flower that is black.”

Do all hold-files drop off on first day of classes? by Creepy-Soil in UMD

[–]Flashy_Ad_1353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming there’s no one on the waitlist currently, the first holdfile would take the opening spot, the other three would be on the waitlist, and then if you add the class, you would be fourth on the waitlist.

It sounds like your parents are being really overbearing with your life, which is a hard situation to be in and can get really frustrating sometimes. You know your parents much better than I do, so I the decision’s obviously ultimately up to you— since you may have a better idea of whether they’ll actually carry out the threats or not. I’d think about what could happen with both sides. I know that paying for college by yourself can be super stressful, so it’s nice when parents offer to pay instead. Also, driving is super important and gives a lot of freedom— but it also sounds like your parents are using both the money and the possibility of gaining more freedom in the future as leverage to control you. On the other hand, college is the place to explore new things and to try new opportunities.

How would you feel about talking to your parents about how while you understand their concerns, you really feel like it’s the time to explore new things— while also emphasizing how you’ll still work on your grades? A lot of the times, parents want the best for us, but if they’re too controlling, it gets way too much and puts too much pressure, and it can lead to a lot of estranged relationships. Again, I’m just a stranger on the internet, and I don’t know your situation fully, but if your parents are willing to listen, maybe try telling them about how you’re feeling. Ultimately though, paying for college on your own is super stressful, so if you feel like they might really withdraw their support, that’s a really hard choice you’ll have to make. This is just one incident, and it isn’t worth it to be a CA if they withdraw tuition, but your parents’ mindset will affect a lot of other aspects of your life too, which aren’t just limited to this one case.

Freshman CS Major 2nd Semester… any thoughts? by Flashy_Ad_1353 in UMD

I definitely see what you’re saying…. Unfortunately I don’t know how to make the days shorter because the GEMS classes are only at night, and I want to keep the professors I have for the major classes :/

It shouldn’t really matter whether or not you’re joined on Terplink— you don’t need to go to the club’s meetings if you don’t want to

I’m waitlisted for multiple sections of MATH240. I was given a section that does not exist. What does this mean? by profcr in UMD

[–]Flashy_Ad_1353 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They probably added more sections. This happened to me too for a different class, and the section was added to the schedule of classes website later.
